Excretory products are metabolic waste products that are eliminated from the body through a physiological process called excretion. The main excretory products are: Ammonia: The primary excretory product in animals, derived from proteins in food. It is the most toxic nitrogenous waste. Urea: The nitrogenous waste excreted by mammals. It is less toxic and less soluble in water than ammonia. Uric acid: The nitrogenous waste excreted by birds and reptiles. Carbon dioxide: A waste product excreted by the lungs. Water: A waste product excreted by the lungs. Bile pigments: A waste product excreted by the liver and intestines. The kidneys are the primary organs that filter blood and remove toxic substances from the body. The kidneys contain millions of nephrons, which are structural filtration units that filter blood. The kidneys reabsorb essential substances like glucose, amino acids, salts, and water, and produce urine to remove excess water and nitrogenous waste. The urine is then passed to the urinary bladder via the ureters. The brain signals the bladder to contract, and urine is excreted through the urethra. Other organs that help eliminate waste products include the lungs, liver, and skin. The lungs excrete carbon dioxide and water, while the skin excretes waste through sweat glands.
