The instrumentation from the very beginning here sounds like morning, not night. New beginnings...fresh starts. So this sets up the paradox of the lyrics. Dark is the night for all means morning is coming, those fresh starts and new beginnings. I fucking love this song
Your description of what happens sometimes when Morten is singing is true. It's impossible to think of anything else. Maybe one of many reasons why the a-ha music feels relaxing and comforting, you're drawn into it somehow. It's a really good thing that you listen to the music without the videos! I absolutely love the videos, but now you can capture the essence of the music in a better way. Thank you! 😊🎶🇳🇴
The next song is a redo of a single they had released to promote their greatest hits album at the time, you should checkout both versions. The memorial beach version is heavier
Hi Matt this song was produced by AHA. People thought it was a break up song but Pal said it’s the opposite it’s about breaking away, taking a risk. The band had a more mature sound but the lyrics signalled the start of creative re-birth for Pal who had by now moved to the states. Lyric - It’s time we moved out west / this time will be the best. It was released worldwide and hovered just outside the billboard hot 100. Elsewhere the band were now competing for chart space in the UK and Europe. When AHA appeared on the BBC programme top of the pops there was a new policy instated in 1991. Usually bands that played on it had to pre- record their song and mime it but this new policy meant for the first time bands would have to sing live in the studio which often exposed less technically proficient singers but it was no problem for Morten who delivered a soaring performance along with the band and the song entered the top 20 the following week. This is my second fave album many many great tracks on it. Take care and stay safe 😘🇳🇴❤️🏴
Love your comments, Alison, thanks for the info about the song and album. And ha, of course it was no problem for Morten---his voice is from beyond this world!
Memorial beach was recorded at prince’s studio. Magne told the story of how he went into one of the toilets in the studio and there was a smaller urinal, he wrote prince was here above it before wiping it off 🤣
Mags in an interview said that Memorial Beach builds a new house where East Of The Sun tore down the walls musically speaking. I love the uplift of the this as it goes on and the guitar solo is perfect. Can't say much more than that really. MB is often overlooked as an a-ha classic but it is. It is something different but sits along the other works well. Cold As Stone is EPIC. Oh yes, the capitals are justified.
Morten's voice is of another world. The whole man is basically of another world. When I hear this song I can't get the images from the music video out of my head. I'm just a poor woman, after all.
@@marjoriemcbride6557 It's probably not easy to be Morten either, with all the women lying there in a swoon after him. The man is 63 years old, and still cannot move freely in society. I just can't help myself. He's too perfect. You are right. We are left completely defenseless.

I’m pretty old, much older than Morten, so was never in the category of being a screaming teenager who idolised him, but even I am not immune from knowing the feeling of wanting to be close to him.

I agree, as dark as this album is, and the fact it's poor performance resulted in their 7 year break up, I think it stands the test of time for repeated listens...
I haven't seen anyone mention this anywhere else yet. But, even after they returned from their break-up after this album, for several tours they refused to play any tracks from this album live because it reminded them of how much they hated each other during this era. I remember them making lists of "The top 10 bands that will never get back together". Also "Dark is the Night" is the closest thing they ever had to another Top 40 hit, it hovered just outside. And I think from here on, they never released another album in the US market.
A true shame for I would pay good money and travel about anywhere to see them perform it. I skip the idea of going now cause I don’t want to sit through Take on Me or any chance of any of their other poppy stuff 😂😂 Also, I want to say to them that they cater to their fans with a lot of stuff they aren’t exactly fond of, like they don’t want to ruffle feathers or something. WHY not cater to us Memorial Beach fans? What are we, chopped liver? 😂

This album...oh man! Such a terrible shame that Morten didn't agree with the direction the band was taking with Memorial Beach. Morten was right. Although I love Memorial Beach, it was a terrible failure and resulted in their 7 year hiatus. You can't start with something like Hunting High and Low and Scoundrel Days / Stay on these Roads, and then keep that fan base by going as dark as they did. They were very fortunate to be able to return to a reasonable high again with their return album Minor Earth Major Sky. Memorial Beach could have killed them entirely.
