The 12 cranial nerves are a key part of our nervous system and contribute greatly to our wellbeing. They oversee the five senses of smell, sight, hearing, touch, and taste. They help to maintain homeostasis and regulation of our heart rate, breathing, digestion, and blood pressure. They assist in maintaining our equilibrium and balance. New research shows that they play an important role in social engagement, trauma recovery, and human survival in mammalian social groups. Like any other nerve or physiological structure in the body, cranial nerves can become dysfunctional due to a number of different reasons: osseous or membranous restrictions within the cranium or cervical region; inflammation; injury, disease, or trauma; demyelination; poor intracranial pressure; or poor vascularization and blood flow.
    LEARNER OBJECTIVES:
    • Describe the names, locations, and primary functions of all 12 cranial nerves.
    • Summarize how external injuries/traumas and internal dis-ease/illness can affect nerve function.
    • Differentiate between presenting symptomology to identify which cranial nerve(s) is/are affected.
    • Perform osseous, membranous, and energetic CST techniques to improve nerve function.
    • Make sound judgments in determining how to approach a treatment session that addresses cranial
    nerve problems.
    • Combine academic proficiency with hands-on skills to improve treatment outcome.
    • Integrate and modify a variety of CST treatment options to best address the client’s needs.
    • Deepen knowledge, understanding, and embodiment of core CST techniques and principles.
    • Educate clients in self-care and self-empowerment techniques to help the treatment process.
    • Summarize recent studies in neuroscience principles that affect cranial nerve function and healing.
