Goat 아니래서 좀 실망했다가 뒤로 스타일리쉬 얘기해서 ㅇㅋ하고 혼자 타협봄ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ 뭐가됐든… 대단함. 그 작은 기획사에서 올라온 경지에 절대 당연하게 생각 안하고, 꾸준하고 끈기있게 절대 그룹을 포기하지 않는 그룹.. 더 좋은 제의가 있으면 포기할 법도, 힘들어서 그만두고 싶을 법도 한데 그러지 않음. 인생 살면서 포기하지 않고 꾸준히 관철한다는 것 자체가 정말 대단함… 거기다 말해뭐해 대중성도 있고 우리 부모님도 그룹이 아닌 개인 멤버까지 알 정도인데 뭐
These days "brand" generates more buzz than quality of output; popularity begets popularity until they are no longer popular. Slow and steady is what Highlight said they wanted for their careers moving forward. Although as a fan, I would love for them to have a bigger fanbase, broader/international notoriety, I'm just happy they are consistently active and still making new fans as they head into their 14 years together. And they've accomplished something that very rare idols have done - they are the only group (apart from Shinwa I think?) who left their former label as an intact group and established their own agency. It's more common for idols to start their own agencies these days, but not back when Highlight did it. Also, no other group left together, stayed together, and continue to "consistently" promote as a veteran group - all the while still producing great listenable music, always finding new ways to reinvent themselves/trying out various concepts while still maintaining their own, unique voices and staying true to themselves.

비스트 시절부터 덕질해온 하이라이트의 좋은 소개 영상 감사합니다~^^ 소개에서 하신 말처럼 첫인상부터 일단 노래가 너무 좋고 취향저격이었어요~ 아이돌노래에 대한 편견을 완전 깨주고 새롭게 정립시켜준 비스트 ~ 노래에 스토리가 있고, 멜로디가 너무 좋고, 멤버들이 다 실력에 외모에 인성에,,, 뭐 하나 빠진거 없이 다 갖추고 있는 정말 멋진 그룹이랍니다~^^
Yes, BEAST was immensely big back then. They were the one who put CUBE in Big 3 alongside SM & JYP. It's a fact that no one could criticize them. They were the model group, everything about them was seen positively. I remember they even got chosen as that one group that would stay together for a long time without any problem thanks to their great teamwork and beautiful attitude towards fans and their job. But i guess, it's really hard to go against the 7th year curse. CUBE being petty, not letting them to use BEAST name when they left. The wound of having to change their name will forever scar my heart. It was & still be the biggest regret in my life, and maybe in the members' life 😔 plus with the two members leaving.. I've never been in so much pain in my life. Bad news after bad news. For other groups' fans, I really wish you'll never experience what we B2UTY/LIGHTs had to go through before. Even until now, I still cry every time I think about it
I have followed Beast since their debut due to their MTV series released in 2009 (i.e., titled B2ST). Today, I'm very proud to call myself a Light as I've walked 14 long years alongside this legend of an idol group. I was someone who barely listened to music in my youth but Beast single-handedly drew me in with their high quality releases. I stayed 14 years with them not purely because of amazing music, but also because of their talents, humility towards the people who support them, seriousness towards their job and kind respect for those who came before and after them. As a testament to their work ethics, many junior idol groups have expressed how they are always treated kindly by Highlight members and even mentioned them as role models. While I agree that if we're judging success purely by monetary gains and size of fandom, Highlight might not be considered GOAT, but I truly believe in terms of the quality of their work (e.g., discography, broadcast, live) and their moral characters, they truly are the greatest and will leave a legacy in their wake.
thank you for this really entertaining video explaining highlight and i cannot wait for part 2! i love how everything was said objectively and i am so glad to see that you said they were a huge part in kpop industry in terms of contributing to it. it's true that beast/highlight can never be considered the GOAT of KPop even when they were at their peak but they are the group that you can always rely on to be loved by the public and fans and who are always steadily maintaining themselves in the industry even after 13 years. i think that is one of the greatest characteristics of highlight that makes them still strong and be absolutely evergreen in the industry 💙💛💚💜
I don’t agree that after 2011’s Fiction they failed to hit the roof whatever that means. In fact in the following year with the Midnight Sun album and with Beautiful Night they again won Melon’s Artist of the Year. Then in 2013 Junhyung took on the songwriting and producing chore with Shadow and in 2014, they released Good Luck and to mark their 5th anniversary, 12:30. GL won 10 No.1 music show trophies and 12:30 several more and Beast won major awards at the end of the year. Their last album as Beast, “Highlight,” featured Ribbon, a powerful heartbreak ballad like 12:30, Rainy Days, and Will You Be All Right? Their records in the second half of their Cube stay were distinguished by maturity and greater depth of feeling and featured their trademark powerful vocals. Whatever failings they had weren’t the result of their faltering art or lack of industry but due to management lapses on the part of Cube. And that’s why they didn’t renew but left and formed their own agency.
Beast’s Good Luck was also one of the first songs to hit inkigayo’s perfect score of 11,000 under its old system, a feat only groups like BTS/Big Bang/Exo had accomplished. Coincidentally the first song to achieve this was Troublemaker’s Now.
I think by 'hit the roof' they meant 'crack the ceiling' of numbers, not award numbers but actual album/ digital sales numbers. This is a number-based channel after all. And sales numbers matter then or now, where fandom size determines who win awards. It's amazing Alone won 3 trophies given that HL is a small underdog label with 1% of the size of YG SM promotional budget. I agree with the view that they can reach a new peak in global sales numbers. With military era behind them, they will continue to pave the way in their own iconic, original, independent ways. I have full faith in their future!
Thank you so much for the positive words about HIGHLIGHT ♥️♥️. Subjectively of course they’ll always be the GOAT for us fans especially after everything that has happened 😢, but I also agree that objectively they couldn’t be considered as GOAT compared to other groups sales and popularity. Letting go the name Beast was hard as hell, but it is what it is 🥲. Even till this day I still meet people who don’t know who HIGHLIGHT is but they knew who BEAST is. Thankfully they love what they’re doing as the group Highlight and loyal fans are not going anywhere, which I think results in their consistency in releasing albums even though each members are also doing well in their personal schedules.

Thank you Steve for an informative piece on HIGHLIGHT. I'm a new South East Asian LIGHT who discovered them in 2021, and until them I was just a casual Kpop listener. Here are the bits that are literally reflecting my thoughts 7:00 various songs that were well-favored back then are still being listened to a lot even 'till now. It’s not just about the quality of being a star as an idol, but it means that their music was just simply good. 12:48 and as I said before, their songs were very public-friendly, and the melodies were lyrical. Though they were somewhat upbeat, they still continued to lead the storytelling. 17:20 Whenever they would release a new album, they always went above average. And it was natural for them to place 1st on music charts. And as I said before, at the time, promoting Hallyu overseas was very limited to only some places such as Southeast Asia. So, it was nowhere close to today’s BTS or BLACKPINK. However, I personally believe that because BEAST existed in this era, they played a role as a stepping stone to BTS and BLACKPINK's further overseas advancement today. 18:48 Since they were so riped with the experiences over the years, it felt natural. 21:04 and be an idol group that will never vanish. 아닌데에,. 비스트 시절 12년 이후부터 하이라이트가 되기전까지 그렇게 잔잔하기만 하진 않았었어요 여름에 굿럭 활동하고 연말에 12시 30분 활동하면서 또 다른 전성기라니 그 해 대상은 비스트가 받아도 이상하지 않았다느니 하는 말도 나올 정도로 활발히 활동하고 반응 또한 좋았던 때도 있었었는데.. 그리고 그 이전에도 섀도우나 아름다운 밤이야 활동들 역시 다 1위는 물론 선공개곡들도 다 1위들 했었을만큼 나쁘지 않았었는데..

사실 비스트 시절에 팬들은 당시 소속사였던 큐브 엔터테인먼트를 큡레기라고 부를 만큼 그들이 보인 만행들에 대해 반발이 컸기 때문에 사실 큐브를 떠나 새로 시작한다는건 너무 좋았습니다 물론 이름을 뺏긴건 아직도 이해가 가지 않아요 이 또한 큐브의 만행 중 하나..
진짜 전무후무하다고 생각합니다. 지금까지도 새로운 길을 닦아나가는 그룹이라고 생각해요

Thank you so much for the positive words about HIGHLIGHT ♥️♥️. Subjectively of course they’ll always be the GOAT for us fans especially after everything that has happened 😢, but I also agree that objectively they couldn’t be considered as GOAT compared to other groups sales and popularity. Letting go the name Beast was hard as hell, but it is what it is 🥲. Even till this day I still meet people who don’t know who HIGHLIGHT is but they knew who BEAST is.
Thankfully they love what they’re doing as the group Highlight and loyal fans are not going anywhere, which I think results in their consistency in releasing albums even though each members are also doing well in their personal schedules.
Highlight who always give me strength using their music 🎉🎉🎉

아닌데에,. 비스트 시절 12년 이후부터 하이라이트가 되기전까지 그렇게 잔잔하기만 하진 않았었어요
여름에 굿럭 활동하고 연말에 12시 30분 활동하면서 또 다른 전성기라니 그 해 대상은 비스트가 받아도 이상하지 않았다느니 하는 말도 나올 정도로 활발히 활동하고 반응 또한 좋았던 때도 있었었는데..
그리고 그 이전에도 섀도우나 아름다운 밤이야 활동들 역시 다 1위는 물론 선공개곡들도 다 1위들 했었을만큼 나쁘지 않았었는데..
하 재밌어 빨리 다음화 보고싶다
