    I really like your reviews on this engine. I ran across them while researching this motor. I look forward to more of them as you get more time on the motor.
    As stated by others, you can produce different amounts of horsepower from the same size engines, but I'm guessing this is the way Hangkai got their numbers.
    Horsepower is a unit of measurement of power developed by engineer James Watt in the late 18th century. Although its original purpose was to compare the output of steam engines with the power of horses (hence its name), it has since been adopted as a unit of measurement for all sorts of engines.
    Mechanical Horsepower, hp(I)-550 foot-pounds per second, approximately 745.7 watts. The most common definition of horsepower, mechanical horsepower is the horsepower James Watt invented in 1782.
    - 3.6 Mechanical Horsepower is equivalent to 2,684.520 Watts (2.68Kw).
    - Hangkai specs for this motor: 3.6HP 2.6KW 55cc

    I agree with the overall quality of the Intex. I don’t go far in it and extra cautious. It’s very inexpensive, but also cheap! I’ll stick with it for another season, then check out your advice.

    love the video, but there is no accurate way to convert cc to hp, by googling it. cc is a measure of displacement, and not a measurement of power output in any way at all.

    cc is just the engine size you could theoretically obtain just about any HP with any given cc. and 2 and 4 stroke engines with vary greatly as well. BTW good videos I may add. Very thorough. I was going to purchase one of those but instead decided to go with a 55 lb thrust electric trolling motor on mine.

    Hey @Boilerdan1, I have a question. I took my motor out last week and I tried my absolute best to keep the motor at the what I judged to be the half way mark of the throttle, in other words, from the extent to which the throttle turns, I turned it only half way. At some point, while the engine was on, I accidentally turned the throttle nearly to full and it sounded to me as though the motor didn't speed up, meaning it didn't sound like I was getting more RPMs during the brief few seconds that the throttle was nearly wide open. This makes me wonder... lets say for arguments sake that zero degrees is idle throttle, and just choosing an arbitrary number here, lets say ninety degrees is the full extent to which the throttle turns... that said would you say that half throttle was at 45 degrees? And by extension, that full throttle was at 90 degrees? I am just afraid that I may have been pushing my motor too hard during this break in period accidentally. In all, I probably ran the motor for a total of an hour and a half at absolute maximum, in bursts of 15-30 minutes. I hope I am getting my meaning across properly. Thanks again in advance.

    • @BoilerDan1
      @BoilerDan1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know exactly what you mean…. There’s very little variance of speed with this motor. I think what is more important is that you change speed as opposed to one constant rpm. My thought would be to throttle down to an idle for a few seconds, then throttle back up. Just very the speed from time to time. I wouldn’t be concerned about going full throttle as I think you almost have to, to engage the clutch system. So full speed ahead, and then just back it down and back up. The only way to go slow is to replace the clutch spring with a lighter one. Then you can throttle down and still have the propeller turn.
      So I’m thinking you can start going full speed for little bursts of time, even for 5 or 10 minutes at a time.

      I wish I could say that I’ve succeeded in improving the issue. But to date , no luck. The best thought I’ve had would be to add more motor support by securing some type of frame to the plywood floor. But that complicates set up. That has me considering a different raft that has a solid back plate already in place.... I’ll decide that this summer 👍 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment on my video!

    • @BoilerDan1
      @BoilerDan1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can’t recommend the motor for trolling. There’s not really any muffler, the exhaust exits below the waterline, so it’s very loud under water.
      They offer a 4 cycle version that has a muffler. I don’t know much about it other than the exhaust is above water.

      On a full tank of fuel it will run for over one hour. But you can add more fuel and keep running as long as you want. It’s best to run full speed after the break in time so that the clutch is fully engaged. That will cause less wear on the clutch so it will last longer.

    I'm currently confused about whether to buy the 2-stroke 3.6 hp or 4-stroke 4 hp for the Intex Mariner 4. Which one do you think is better?

    • @BoilerDan1
      @BoilerDan1  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In hindsight, I would have preferred the 4stroke. It has a muffler! The two stroke exhaust is below the water line so it’s a bit loud. You can lay the 2 stroke down because it doesn’t have an oil pan. I’ve not heard the 4 stroke running, but the 2 stroke is pretty loud. I also lost a lot of thrust on the raft because it spongy.

    The website you used is calculating four stroke displacement versus horsepower.
    A better estimate is 15 to 17cc per horse power on average.
    If you use 17cc per hp, you come out with 3.2hp.
    I think they're going with 15cc per horse power and that comes out to 3.6hp.
    That being said, some of the videos I've seen using 12 foot jon boats have 6hp Merc's and Evinrudes on plane moving close to 20mph and the Hangkai 6hp looking very slow.
    I'd love to see one boat use each of the motors for a fair comparison of thrust and speed.

    • @BoilerDan1

      I enjoyed my time with it…… however turning 72, and the local river was a bit risky for the rubber raft….. my family convinced me that it was time to move on….. I sold the entire set up.
      That being said, the motor itself has its challenges as I pointed out in several segments. But I would do it again if the price was cheap enough 😂. But if a serious boater, I think I would consider a used brand name unit. You’ll have to make a decision based on your budget and knowledge about working on small engines 👍👍. Thanks for watching ❤️

    • @BoilerDan1
      @BoilerDan1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not experienced with the electric motors, however I do think that if it were on a solid boat instead of a raft, the speed would be a lot better. However it’s a bit noisy, so it’s good for going from point A to B but too loud to use as a trolling motor.

    • @BoilerDan1
      @BoilerDan1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kind of….. mostly it’s the softness of the raft. I’ve not been able to correct that issue but I think it could be done by somehow securing the motor motor to the wooden floor. Or getting a more solid boat to put it on 👍

  • @brentneves3602
    @brentneves3602 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That hesitation at running speeds, is a small intermittent vapour lock condition caused by the hot air being circulated by the flywheel fan, warming up the carburetor, and vaporizing the fuel. I had the same issue with my motor. You are going to have to remove all that sound dampening insulation you installed, or it will completely shut down on a hot day, that added heat will prematurely wear out you clutch also.

    • @BoilerDan1
      @BoilerDan1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your advise and expertise. I have already removed the sound dampening foam, and the motor jumping had stopped. I also think part of it was a poor gas cap vent to relieve the vacuum in the tank.
      I appreciate your taking the time to watch, comment and provide guidance to us all.

    • @brentneves3602
      @brentneves3602 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BoilerDan1A bad fuel cap ventilation, can be a valid issue, as atmospheric pressure cannot equalize the gap in the tank as the Engine consumes the fuel, creating an obvious cavitation in the fuel system. I got Lucky with my cap, it was properly venting, but had a similar issue with an old chain saw, a few years ago.... I do know that many weed wackers, or other two stroke engines tend to have the carburetor, which is also the fuel pump, exposed outside of the engine shroud, with it's own well ventilated protection cover, as the Boling point of fuel is so low, and it turns into a vapour state quite easily, inadvertently preventing the pumping process. I found that using a higher octane fuel like 91 helps quite a bit too as it is more stable. I know that my old 1970 Skidoo snowmobile, starts to cough a bit if the engine runs too hot and heat soaks the Tolotson carburetor, then it runs a bit lean, and I have to be careful....
      Well, all in all you seem to be getting by with this engine fairly well. I ran mine for years after I modified it to run with out the stupid covers, I always ran 30:1 oil to gas premix, and that engine refused to die, eventually I sold it still running perfectly, with my inflatable dingy and transome, even threw in a few spare clutches and a 30:1 ratio mixing bottle, I loved that little engine, but I wanted something I could troll with on the larger lakes, so I purchased an small plastic Sundolphin yacht tender, and a Parsun brand 4 stroke 2.6 outboard motor, no clutch to wear out, as it has an actual engagement gear, you could run it all day with out issue, the down side is that the motor is very heavy for a small unit.
      By the way, I absolutely love your PVC inflatable boat trailer, I need to build something like that for my boat, you should do a small U-tube video on that little masterpiece.👍

    But i need your suggestions. I've been looking at 4HP 2 stroke hangkai brand and 3.6 hp like yours. You think which one is better? 4hp or 3.6hp? So far do you have any problem with your hangkai motor?

    • @BoilerDan1
      @BoilerDan1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      TheNickIsyraf ;
      I think the 4hp is 4 stroke motor. Advantage is you don’t have to mess with mixing 2cycle oil with the gas. It might have a little more power? It’s air cooled. Down side is that if you lay the motor down on its side oil can leak out or into the cylinder. I’m not sure which side you need to lay it on? But if you lay it correctly there won’t be a problem. Or if you can keep it upright. I went with the two stroke because I have to lay mine on its side a lot.
      Two cycle was less expensive and you’re always using clean oil.
      But if I didn’t always have to lay mine down, I’d have gone with the 4 stroke one. Might review all my videos and subscribe for new ones. I’ll be adding a new segment this fall with new suggestions.

      TheNickIsyraf Correct, there will be no gear oil in the gear area down by the propeller. Also be careful not to over fill. There’s an a line etched that you fill to and it is a little below being totally full. Don’t over tighten the screws.... I did and stripped one by tightening too much. • @BoilerDan1
      @BoilerDan1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm still unsure about loosening the gas cap? It does have a release valve so to speak built into it. I loosened it because in the initial running of the motor it would buck or kick sometimes and it does create a vacuum in the gas tank... But that might be normal? The bucking has been greatly reduced as I have put more run time on the motor.

      I also would slow down when it happened. It really felt more like a fuel / air mixture problem and I didn't want too much stress on the motor. I'd slow down for just a little bit and then throttle back up. Mine rarely does it now, so give yours some time.

    I must agree with other people who posted; there is no accurate conversion from cc's to hp. cc is cubic centimeters displacement and hp is the amount of work that can be extracted from the running engine and a unit of power equal to 550 foot-pounds per second (745.7 watts). To get the proper horsepower measurement, it would have to be hooked up to a dynamometer. Otherwise a great and informative video with very in depth look at how to properly initialize and break in the unit to prepare for actual everyday use.

      But the current is also swifter than I thought. There are a lot of log James at different places along the banks adding more concern for a raft. I hope to make a longer journey down the Tippecanoe river sometime this summer. It's clear water and more popular with kayak and canoe enthusiasts.

      So far I've not made much attempt at a better solution,,, I took a ratchet type strap and looped it around the motor and then around the seat post that I have mounted to the floor. I was able to pull the motor upward that way... But with the raft being so flexible I still think I'm loosing thrust. Being mid-winter in Indiana, I haven't tried anything else yet. You would think I'd work on it..... But I'm escaping winter in Florida and failed to bring the raft along! :0) I'll update maybe in the late spring when I get it out again.

      You can use the same fuel as your car. I got the highest grade hoping for less ethanol blended in. It runs fine with any grade but the ethanol blended fuels cause the fuel lines to break down faster.

      I don't think I was clear. For break-in you need to vary the speed. I totally agree with you that when running you need the to go fast enough to have the clutch either be engaged or totally on idle so not wear it out at the medium/low speed. I went out again today and it ran very smooth and I did keep it at either full speed or slightly under. Or idle... but I try not to idle long either. Thanks again for your thoughts and advise.

    I'm considering one of these motors. It did look like your boat was producing a lot of drag. I have a 15 foot Bris Inflatable Kayak and it is faster with a little 1.5 hp motor I have on it. I've had the Intex and ended up giving it away to some kids that like to float with no motor. Saturn and Bris and others make some great and affordable inflatables. I saw another video that did a test on the hp of the engine and the one they had only put out 1910 watts which is about 2.56 hp. I'm still unsure as to whether to try one.

    • @BoilerDan1
      @BoilerDan1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm considering getting a better raft too! I'll check out the ones you mentioned. I'm sure I'd get better speed with a solid mount for the motor. Overall I'm happy with mine, but if you have watched all or most of my video's on it, I've had issues, but have been able to fix anything. The clutch is the weakest item, but I've put a better (less tight) spring on it and expect it to last longer. Changing it was not difficult and the part was in the $10 range. I would consider getting the 4 stroke model. It is totally air cooled eliminating the water pump system on the 2 stroke. Plus no mixing oil and gas. But you can't lay it on it's side the wrong way or oil will get into the cylinder. I haven't figured out which side you can lay it on. I'm sill having fun with mine, but again, there are little things to deal with for sure!

      There are several available on eBay in the just under $220 range . I’m not suggesting this seller but will add a link to get you started. I’d recommend reviewing the sellers rating and that they have a sales record of a lot of sales. eBay is similar to Amazon that they guarantee the product will be delivered. I noticed some sellers offer free shipping and reasonable delivery schedules. I purchased mine through eBay.
      I also don’t necessarily recommend the motor, I just documented my experience.

At an idle, the exhaust comes out above the waterline, at the same point as the cooling water exit is at. The equation to calculate horsepower is simple: Horsepower = Torque x RPM / 5,252
    Knowing this more then likely because it's a 2 stroke thus it spins faster then a 4 stroke aka higher rpm you have a small cc motor with a high HP
    What you all are thinking of in terms of get up and go is torque 4 stroke have 2 beat off the line to about 3/4 throttle
    Then a 2 stroke will hit its power band and pull away from a 4 stroke as 2 strokes run fast while 4 strokes get up and go
    In these small motors the seat of pants feeling given 2 difrent motors will be vary difrent but top speed will be about the same 7mph give or take a few

    • @BoilerDan1

      The motor itself has been fine! But that isn't to say that there have not been issues. So if you don't mind working on it from time to time on the little extra things, then it was a good buy! To date, I have made 16 video's on several areas, documenting how the motor is doing. Here is a link that might let you see the topics. I'll summarize more below:
      LINK: th-cam.com/play/PLjMZtm2hvqrOIvLcah1u1V45Y_R-AKeqm.html
      Things I've repaired/replaced:
      Spark Plug, Fuel Lines, Clutch, Pull Starter.
      Each item, even replacing the clutch was not difficult. The clutch has too tight of a spring and in my opinion causes excess wear on it. I've replaced the spring with a lighter weight one and it seems to have helped. But that being said, you should plan on replacing it every other season depending on how often you use the motor. The fuel lines is possibly due to ethanol in the fuel. I use the highest grade fuel hoping it has less or no ethanol. I have just started putting an additive in the fuel that says it will counter the effects of ethanol in the fuel.
      I don't use mine all that often, mater of fact, this past summer I only went out one time, and that was when the clutch started slipping so much that I had to return to shore. The new spring has really helped, but it will take a season or two to confirm that.
      As far as the hours of use? Maybe 80 - 100 hours? I've not really kept track closely. Break in is very important, and it did buck in the beginning. I think that was because the vacuum release in the fuel cap was not working very well. That has cleared up, but at the time, I would loosen the fuel cap and that seemed to help. But now it runs fine with the fuel cap on tight.
      Thanks for watching.

      I have several video's on the motor. There are issues, but all have been minor, but a pain. Examples are the small things. Bad spark plug, poor quality fuel lines, a very weak clutch that I just changed out. The motor itself seems to be doing fine. So check out some of the other issues I've had so you know what you're getting into. But I think you are already more knowledgeable than I am on motors. I'm a beginner, but thought who better to document how the motor works out!

    50cc Motorcycles:
    Lightweight motorcycles with 50cc usually have 2-stroke engines that produce anywhere from 3 to 9 HP. However, some racing 50cc motorcycles can pack a punch, getting up to 15,000 rpm, with anywhere from 10 to 20 HP.

    A electric trolling motor on a kayak would be a safer and more enjoyable rig. You could leave the kayak on top of your car.Kayaks,trolling motors and deep cycle batteries come in all price ranges.
    I had a Sears diehard 36lb thrust trolling motor move a 14 ft. Jon boat 3 times faster than that raft without noise.
    My push lawn mower sounds sounds better than that outboard after 10 years use.
    You might get the bugs out of that outboard,but air cooled outboards are to loud unless you go exspenive.

It really didn't change the noise level much if at all. But with all the vents open, I didn't have any overheating problems. But the area near the exhaust was a concern. Also the 25:1 fuel oil mix is very oily so maybe when trying to start this time go 30:1 mix?
      If it’s already broken in, the fuel mixture is 50:1 and it won’t be so oil rich that can foul the spark plug.

    • @BoilerDan1

      Yes, but you must have the papers from the manufacturer to take to the state licensing branch to get the registration. That's only required if you are putting a motor on the raft.

      It seems like if you ad a gas engine to any watercraft you need to register it. And in NJ if it's an electric motor greater than 1hp it must be registered as well... 😕

    • @BoilerDan1

      No motor registration here in Indiana. But the boat must be registered if you put any motor on it. So your canoe would need one, but not the motor.... Probably a little odd?

    these videos are so great lol but Dan this outboard just isn't workin out for ya!
    Ethanol blended fuel does not gum up carburetor's, however using LOW octane, HIGH additive fuel from a non-top teir gas company definitely WILL. ALSO using low grade 2 stroke marine oil WILL. Use a synthetic type if it doesn't state otherwise that you should not. Just figure out the highest performing 2 stroke outboard oil and stick with that, as high performance often means smooth, clean performance. Then go ahead and run a lean mixture if you're finding a few different recommendations for this outboard, go with the leanest and use SUNOCO or SHELL 93 octane V-Power fuel! It is top teir, clean as can be and is the LEAST contaminated with crappy additives by FAR out of all other manufacturers. Do it regardless of if it says to do 87 octane or 91 octane or not, you want performance blended fuel or you're gonna end up with a lower true octane rating than what is stated. Trust me, this is what you want with 2 strokes. I've tried everything else instrumented testing. Also see if there's a throttle tube in the carburetor, if you shorten that slightly you can get around 4-5 hp. If they use said throttle tube. NON ethanol blended gasoline is only necessary if you're gonna put the engine away for a long time without bleeding it, often times, depending on where you go, comes at the MAJOR cost of performance, which is really unfortunate because it's a nice resource, just not well executed, and it won't ever be until the united states offers 106 octane or so at the pump and just charges an extra 15 cents! high compression engines are more efficient and it'll cost less in the end. Sick of this 87 octane bullshit, it's literal vodka folks are using! May as well be.

      @BoilerDan1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven't really had any major problems, just showing people along my journey. I do and have always used the highest octane and agree with you on Shell JVJ-Power but no station close. Phillips 66 highest grade is working out for me. I'm due to get some 2 stroke oil and will take your advise. I did the same with the spark plug. I'm hoping others will read your advise too.

      I really think something was mixed up in the translation from Chinese to English. No way this is 3.6 HP. But the type raft I put it on isn't going for speed. Tomorrow I'm finally going to a small lake along with a passenger and full load of equipment. I'll get a good reading of the speed and hope to test out very inexpensive Fish Finder. I'm hoping for at least a depth reading! I'll make a short follow-up video on all of that in the near future.

      There are several contributing factors: The raft is to giving which allows the motor to dip. Thus wasting some of it's thrust. The raft itself isn't a design for speed and has a lot more drag than a hard shell boat. I had one viewer advise his is on a 10 foot light weight hard shell boat and it goes 8mph.

      I had trouble with the motor dragging too. If I set the pvc platform to the back it works fine. The boat ramp was kind of shallow at the place I put in. But as the season progresses, I'll keep you thought in mind. I can easily chop off a couple of inches because that is the segment that isn't glued. Thanks for the idea! :0)
