- The Amazon rainforest is home to 10 percent of the world's known species, and its ancient trees remove millions of tons of carbondioxide per year from the atmosphere. Its pristine forests, however, are increasingly under threat.
The soil underneath some of the rainforests is laced with gold, and each year, thousands of kilometres of the Amazon rainforest are devastated by illegal gold mining.
In Peru, where the rainforest covers about 60 percent of the country, illegal mining operations threaten local communities and turn swathes of rainforest into barren waste sites.
So what are the consequences of illegal mining for local communities and the ecosystem? What can be done to stop the destruction of the rainforest? And what happens to the dirty gold once it leaves Peru?

as someone who work in this, dirty gold is dirty gold, just because you use recycled gold doesnt mean that it wasnt dirty to begin with. You are just laundering dirty gold, making it "clean" gold

Like so many people out there, I am certain I had no knowledge about "dirty gold" and I am sure the same applies to so many other everyday products we purchase. Only by bringing stories like this to everyone's attention will we eventually be able to bring to an end practices similar to this.

Unfortunately Linda, Individual residential economics, do not dictate the moral reality of any mining operation. Ask yourself this: how can any mining operation be 'clean', when corrupted through corporate politics?... it's ALL dirty and feeding one's "family on one dollar a day" (as you put it), is the physical 'result', not the 'question'.
There are other ways to earn a living that don't involve destroying the environment.

To use gold or recycled gold is a bit like used fur. The damage was more likely done. Years before society cared about these issues. Personally I never owned a gold ring. I,'ve always used silver. 999. I have in the past consider pawnshop gold. I never wanted a new fur...moms will work and instead of bear, Fox,beaver, or other wild or rare animals farm raised rabbit or sheep was a good alternative. It not the average person which could wear those rare wild animals...the elites have ways been into managing to destroy

People often say, why do we need to get out into space? Well I think I can endorse the mining of some asteroids or moons for resources if it helps to ease this destruction of our planet Earth. There is no other place like this that we can even see, never mind get to and yet we treat it with such disrespect, it just makes you want to cry. The illegal gold mining outsiders are Peruvians themselves that don't have the resources that rich foreign corporations have to mine gold legally, because they would have to follow the same environmental regulations that companies from the developed world have to follow.

I see gold as good for practical use in technology and medical science and it's economic value. I find the emphasis to it in jewelry to be a primitive attraction to shiny objects. And donning it to be very narcissistic, because the wearer will want people to notice.

After watching this documentary I decided to leave all good and good made products.

Gold production is regulated throughout the world to stabilize the price of gold and by those means the world economy. They shouldn’t be mining there at all. The real problem is greed and poverty. Now on the rainforest and oxygen production is not as big a deal as the alarmist try to scare us with as 83% of oxygen is created by plankton and algae. Now one of the cool facts about gold is that it is 100% recyclable and there are very few metals that can say that. The problem here is to many people throw their old phones and electronic devices away, when especially here recyclers will take them for free. Rediculous

Sad!! :( At the very least what we can do as individual is to ignore gold altogether, not keeping it, not wearing it, not buying it, not selling it and just stay away from it. There are a lot of other earth-friendly alternatives to look pretty, to have wedding ring and to keep your wealth, and gold is not the option. I am free of gold and don't see the need...

Gold diamonds platinum and other so called precious metals have inherent value, not just for showing off. Everyone is hungry for technology, cars and similar. Some of it is beyond a necessity, some a market fad and some beyond stupid.

There are two prices for gold. One is based on the responsible cost of "Western" or first world production.
The other price is the middleman price that you get on the streets in second and third world countries. This gold tends to be a quick silver amalgamation. Nevertheless this gold is about half price and is why traceability will not come around anytime soon.
For now all that can happen is a much growing black market.
If you want to really fix the problem you have to actually take fine gold recovery machines out to these people and train them for thousands of hours on how to use them but interestingly enough the cost to do this is already included in the regular price of gold but because the middleman's wheeled so much power by holding the gold and being the path to the miners this never happens. The gigantic margin that in the first world covers responsible agriculture and ecological studies and all of that jazz is pocketed in the third world.

I don't get why in third world countries they don't recycle the mercury? Mercury is expensive why do they just dump it? It be more profitable to extract the mercury and use it again, and sell the excess you get from mining.
jonnywaselectric Yes, but why let the mercury go into the environment? it costs money, and gold often has some mercury already attached to it.
So by recycling the mercury you go from it being an expense to a small profit.
They aren't hard to build, you just need to redirect the exhaust from melting the gold/mercury into a bucket of water and all the mercury fumes will condense back into liquid mercury.

Gold can not only be dirty but deathly as well I was standing at a bus stop in New Orleans once with an old woman and young man of color when suddenly the young man snatched the old woman's chain off her neck and ran directly into the project's across the street from the bus stop. The only way to the origins of a given parcel of gold is threw atomic testing. The min. any gold is "recycled" it is been blended with other golds from who knows where. To say dirty gold or clean gold is a marketing scam that allows the seller to price their product higher. I do agree that some of these mining practices are deplorable but to go after a dirty vs clean gold marketing campaign is just a scam. I worked with gold for 60 years as a manf. jeweler and trading one bad idea for another is just bad.
Peru Gold Mining. Look at what you have done to the most beautiful rain forest that God has blessed you with. You have taken something that cannot be replaced and turned it into an ugly strip mining area and for what, a very small amount of gold. I understand that the people who live there must have an income , but please do not allow any outsiders to tempt you to sell your mining rights to them. If you do, it won't be long until they own everything and you will own nothing. Protect your way of life and your work as best as you can and force the outsiders out of your country and save whatever you have left. You have one of the most important and amazing forests left on the entire earth. Protect it, love it and each other, and most importantly, keep what is yours.
