Howards death is also foreshadowed when Wayne tells Lorraine "You don't wanna give the old man a heart attack, do you?" or something like that, and it's exactly what she does
The middle of the movie scene where they all but announced to the audience from here in it's going to turn into a very different vibe by pausing to jam out a beautiful rendition of landslide. Chef's kiss. 👨🍳
the commentary on age and sex that X provides is honestly what makes it such an amazing movie for me. so glad to hear you cover it and sing its praises
I enjoy the fact X inverts the horror trope of "sex kills". If you look at the order of the deaths you will see the characters, who have the least amount get offed first. Also MaXXXine's father being a preacher is a nod to the movie "Hardcore" (1979) starring George C Scott.
I enjoyed both films, but I think X is probably my preferred piece of the two. Something I thought was being poked at is how promiscuity or any given person's sexual identity or lack thereof is nobody's business but their own. Spoilers to follow: in the film nothing really "bad" happens until someone is made to feel uncomfortable within the film's situation and premise. Maxine and Wayne are both comfortable with their relationship despite her engaging in the adult industry and this is made pretty clear, but when Lorraine suddenly decides she wants to be in the film as well on a whim, it also pretty clearly makes RJ uncomfortable, which creates a pretty rich scene and scenario to dissect. Lorraine, like anyone else, is entitled to act and conduct herself in whatever way she wants, BUT if she is going to be in a relationship with someone, in this case it is RJ, part of being in a relationship is kind of the unspoken agreement that you won't act in ways that will make the other uncomfortable or else you probably shouldn't be together because no one should be made to feel uncomfortable or taken advantage of within a romantic relationship. So, in the film when Lorraine decides to be in the film and does sop despite RJ clearly not being okay with it, what follows pretty much immediately is all the bloodshed. Maybe I am reading too far into things that aren't there or maybe TI was hinting at his thoughts on relationships. No clue, food for thought. Great video as always!
Interesting breakdown. The film does a good job with an ensemble cast. Maxine isn't the star until she is the only one left. I need to go back and watch it again but I recall RJ said something to Lorraine in the van that she didn't like.He does it again before she decides to do the scene.
Pearl was going to get stabby with whoever wandered outside under the moon. It just so happened to be a heartbroken aspiring filmmaker headed for a breakup.
Given this is a movie with an actor playing multiple main contrasting characters in heavy prosthetics, I'm gonna once again take this opportunity to beg for coverage of Susperia (2018) where Tilda Swinton took on THREE distinct roles
You are something special! Your commentary shows so much thoughtfulness and a real understanding & appreciation of art. That’s honestly pretty rare in this current internet space of ours where everything’s about clicks and fake clout lol. That and you really seem like a genuinely sensitive kind soul. Only good people dance with dogs, it’s confirmed. Glad I followed! And I still need to watch these movies goddamnit 😂 the 70s is my favorite era in general and I love TCM so I have no idea why I haven’t seen X yet Edit: I have no idea who Shane Gillis is so I just googled him and you are way cuter, just setting that shit straight lmao
When I first heard of X I thought it was going to be a generic film but this and Pearl blew me away. Another movie this movie took some stuff from was Psycho. The sense of isolation and loneliness and everyone having a past that's not 100% good is cool.
X is shameless, disgusting and vile. I really really enjoyed it. Mia Goth is a great actress, and this film was funny, sexy and horrific. The alligator scene really got under my skin for some reason. Mind you, and I don't want to be too crass here, but has anyone noticed that most A24 films have a close-up of . . . how best to say it . . . splatterings of liquid silk? This, Lighthouse, The Green Knight (I think that was them.) It's not something I have a problem with but it's becoming more prevelant don't you think? Anyway, very good film.
Ti West has been an automatic watch for me since House of the Devil released all those years ago. The Innkeepers is the only one I kind of zone out during. Keep up the good work, Evan. Your content has really been on point.
X is a modern day classic! I’ll never forget the first time I watched this after blind buying the bluray. This movie is now one of my all times favorites. Can’t wait for Maxxxine, I really hope it’s good!
please make a separate video on pearl I love it so much more than X. This is great timing because I just watched these movies and went back on your channel to see if you made videos on them and was sad to see that you didn't but now my wish came true, love your channel!
Love your videos!! They are so insightful and you can tell you took your time and truly appreciated the work before talking about it! This movie specifically is so meaningful to me!! Thank you for giving me so many good videos to binge watch!
Yes Barbarian and Malignant. But my favorite was SMILE. That movie was so smart! I loved it. And no quite horror, but The Menu was an incredibly smart movie!
I would love to see what happened next with these characters if they weren't all brutally murdered. I don't think I've ever felt that way about a slasher before. I'm looking forward to Maxxxine, but I can imagine a movie following all three girls throughout their careers like a pornier Valley of the Dolls
You're right, it's impossible to find fault with this one. Only one criticism, in my opinion Pearl was an even more amazing movie. BTW thanks for a great review as always.
Yes, similar to your experience. I went in about 2-3 days after release. I saw 1 trailer and heard the word of mouth from the online reviewers. That was enough to check it out. I feel like I went in without any expectations besides seeing something violent and different. It came to a shock that, within 10 minutes, I was already so captivated by the characters and knew what I was about to see was special. The shocking first death was something out of left field and done with so much style. Not to mention it is one of the best uses of Don’t Fear The Reaper I have seen in a thriller/horror movie. It just oozes style. I walked out the theater feeling like I really did watch “one fucked up horror picture”. It’s violent, grotesque, unnerving, gross, filled with more sex than any recent horror film, and had some actual messages to ponder over. I immediately knew that I had to physically own this once it hit shelves. I have rewatched three times now and every time I’m in the mood for it, it doesn’t disappoint.
Best horror film of 2022! And it's honestly the best slasher I've seen since the original Scream. The atmosphere of this movie is existential and creepy as hell and the themes of ageism and sexual liberation through pornography are timeless. The themes honestly went over people's heads and the critics loved it but the audience thought it was another average slasher, but I disagree. This movie actually had a lot to say. And through it's characters fatal predictions of their demise and the way they're able to use the camerawork and soundtrack to help move the story along is not what you see in most slashers. Even the porn aspect is what makes this movie unique and sets it apart from most slashers. Because they're utilizing the sex as part of the story while 99% of slashers will just add sex for the sake of adding sex. X is truly a failry unique slasher and horror film. It's honestly the best I've seen in years. And it's brilliance still remains relevant 2 years later. 9.5/10 💯
Very few films have moved me, but X and Pearl were among those ones that did. Ti West is a filmmaker to be reckoned with. I have genuinely become a fan.
As usual, Evan, your observations are spot on. Saw "X" this winter, but saw "Pearl" Saturday night (waited 'til it was on Prime). Very excited to hear your take on it as well.
Couldn’t help but notice THE INNOCENTS briefly shown in your intro, mentioning 2022 being an incredible year, and I’m SO curious if you’ve seen it? I watched it on a whim and it’s so fucking good and so horrifying, great movie, highly rec!

I didn’t know about X until after I watched pearl and when I watched pearl I didn’t know anything about the movie. I loved Pearl and loved X even more. I’m so excited to see Maxxxine and how this trilogy ends
The first time I saw this movie I couldn't stop thinking about grandma dried apple head from The Touch of Satan. I wonder if there was any intended nods or inspiration from that film. 🤔
This movie was very moving and funny and fun. I am only 25 but i already feel like i understand pearl’s perspective😅😭 and i just hope i don’t feel like this when I’m her age. I hope i find worth and love by that time and i certainly hope i dont become a savage regretful murderous dreamer longing for moments i missed in my youth🙁
Can you explain the scene transitions that occur where it goes between the previous scene and the next scene three times? I never got what that was supposed to be about.
Great review as always! Can’t wait for the Pearl one… I find that movie even better than X. Don’t forget that Mia Goth was bound for success: she’s the granddaughter of Brazilian actress Maria Gladys! Till next time, you cultured cutie pie.
I was pretty excited for X after being a big fan of House of the Devil and The Innkeepers. Loved X, enjoyed Pearl, really stoked for MaXXXine. And hey, it's great to see there is someone else out there that really gets into the digital vs film debate. I will admit I don't know what digital "conversion" is, I assume it's adding film grain or something. For me, you really need grain in most horror films and it drives me nuts when a movie looks like an episode of Riverdale. Say what you will about RZ Halloween 2, but I'll take his 16mm cinematography over anything in the recent Halloween trilogy (HK flashback the one exception)
I must say, I never envisaged porn producers breaking into an acoustic rendition of 'Landslide' - it brought a tear to my eye...at how absurd this garbage is.
X is really good the whole cast is great. Pearl is good aswell but i think X is just a better movie and the scope and budget is alot bigger than Pearl. Looking forward to Maxxxine tho hopefully its on par with X or even better.

I agree, somewhat: really nothing in X stood out as a horror, it's all been done better before, no real tension and the kills were meh. Pearl, however, stood out a little more because it was fairly unique: it was a horror character study, as well as origin story. And Mia Goth has stood out as an actress in both, particularly Pearl. I will watch Maxxine, but I don't think I'll be agreeing with people saying it's one of the greatest horror trilogies ever, based on the first 2.
@@OLDDOGE12Yes! I also picture her trying to work a factory job and hold down a farm during WW2 times when a lot of women had to get jobs. Meanwhile Howard is an injured retired soldier that wants to rent out the barn for extra cash. ..and then they kill people. Ty can fill in the rest.🤣😂🤣
