Trained with Mr Paulson twice in early 2000s. Bit of a genius. The first time he was with Mr Inosanto and some International Judo players. Kali / Escrima/ Silat, JKD/ boxing/ Muay Thai/ Savate. Head was hurting!
Erik Paulson has always demonstrated his excellent and extensive knowledge of Martial Arts. I had the opportunity to attend to one of his seminars. Thanks Kevin for Sharing, Thanks Eik.
Brilliant! I love seeing the drill with and without gloves. Makes a huge difference in clinch range by bringing in trapping and grappling. Makes a subtle but important one when blocking at longer ranges too.
Did you do this video because of the sparring with Gabriel Varga? This is a great point where Wing Chun, Boxing, Muay Thai, and Wrestling intersect. The down punch and knee to intercept a shoot was great. Its the kind of thing that I think JKD needs to look at more -- the application of the interception principle to counter grapplers.
Just came across this video, I am glad. Brought back all 1990 memories when I trained in Black belt academy in Scotland. My Sufi Rick young used to organize seminar with Sufi Erik Paulson. It was always awesome to see these two guys together in seminars. They are legends and humble guys. Respect! Reza Negahban
I saw a Jiu Jitsu instructor who used lots of that grab from punch defense stuff. Basically there was no striking instruction, just acknowledgement that opponents will try to strike you, but you should use that to grab them and wrestle them down. Great instruction in this video.
Had the privelege of attending a seminar With Erik Paulson over ten years ago hosted by Dave Carnell rip who ran The Impact Martial Arts Academy s from Stoke On Trent..A wealth n depth of knowledge in Martial Arts tried n pressure tested by the real deal and one of the earliest to compete MMA style..and a really cool nice guy to boot ..as long as you dont p##& him off.. As in his own words " Its all on baby !"
I started to use this drill to improve my friends defense. Good to see others recommend it too. Excellent execution. And the pivot on the cross was awesome @ 4:32
3:11 Ipman from the movie would be proud of that chain punch :p I like how he uses shoulder shell defense first cuz that is the one that people use the least, so its a good number 1 starter to get the brain to remember it. Ima have to try the dutch cross it looks like it has some interesting leverage angles with the arm on arm support.
With ur size, I would highly recommend you get into the internal aspects of wing chun, like training with Sifu Aaron Orr, he's a student of Hawkins Cheung, Bruce Lee's best friend from hong kong. SIfu Orr has lots of guys who use wing chun in boxing, thai boxing matches, mma etc...
My coach once told me, if he's able to touch you with one hand then you've already lost. Coach of UFC fighters and an early mma champion himself, the legend Erik Paulson.
Awesome video and drill, Kevin. Thank you for the great content ! Quick question, the defense outlined at 1:48 is the one we prefer at our gym, but I couldn't make out the name he said, I could hear either "Oak wrap defence", or "Oh crap defence", none of those seem right and I'd love to have the correct name of the technique. Thanks again!
I DONT KNOW WHAT IT IS BUT WATCHING ERIK MAKES ME FEEL SLEEPY I FEEL IM IN GOOD HANDS WITH HIS KNOWLEDGE AND ART DEFO IN TOP 5 OF GREAT TEACHERS IN MIXED MARTIALS I DONT MEAN UFC BUT IN SILAT WRESTLING BOXING THAI ETC ETC SO MUCH.
More proof of my theory that Erik Paulson knows every martial arts move in existence
It's legitimately like 5 but his principle is a move is a move. So he'll pick up techniques from anywhere. He like a real life Steve Rogers🤣🤣🤣
Nah watch his videos on grappling he knows at least 40 different locks and so much more
I actually agree

Brilliant! I love seeing the drill with and without gloves. Makes a huge difference in clinch range by bringing in trapping and grappling. Makes a subtle but important one when blocking at longer ranges too.
I remember watching some very low resolution videos of Mr Paulson 20-30 years ago, it would be a joy to get trained by him.

The bit-rate that Mr Paulson throws out data is just mind boggling. Its just uncacheable in real-time at that rate!

"when you punch me it's like a flies landing on me" 😂😂😂😂😂
Great video!
Thank you!!
That Dutch style defense is like the cross arm block in Hajime no Ippo.
Great video! Now I have learned that fighting Kevin Lee is like shooting a duck. At least I think that was the takeaway?
My coach once told me, if he's able to touch you with one hand then you've already lost. Coach of UFC fighters and an early mma champion himself, the legend Erik Paulson.
