    More proof of my theory that Erik Paulson knows every martial arts move in existence

      It's legitimately like 5 but his principle is a move is a move. So he'll pick up techniques from anywhere. He like a real life Steve Rogers🤣🤣🤣

      Trained with Mr Paulson twice in early 2000s. Bit of a genius. The first time he was with Mr Inosanto and some International Judo players. Kali / Escrima/ Silat, JKD/ boxing/ Muay Thai/ Savate. Head was hurting!

    Did you do this video because of the sparring with Gabriel Varga?
    This is a great point where Wing Chun, Boxing, Muay Thai, and Wrestling intersect.
    The down punch and knee to intercept a shoot was great. Its the kind of thing that I think JKD needs to look at more -- the application of the interception principle to counter grapplers.

    I saw a Jiu Jitsu instructor who used lots of that grab from punch defense stuff. Basically there was no striking instruction, just acknowledgement that opponents will try to strike you, but you should use that to grab them and wrestle them down. Great instruction in this video.

    I like how he uses shoulder shell defense first cuz that is the one that people use the least, so its a good number 1 starter to get the brain to remember it. Ima have to try the dutch cross it looks like it has some interesting leverage angles with the arm on arm support.

    Erik Paulson is an exceptional fighter but...
    0:22 The windshield wiper is like a downgraded philly shell and it does work for aggressive fighters who try to force their offence into you but the issue I have with it especially for someone who uses the philly shell as both offense and defense aggressive againts fighters is that when you overuse the parry when you are sparring/fighting someone experienced is that:
    1. The parry doesn't protect againts every punch especially againts sharp left hooks which is why in the philly it's a face block, body block or a duck instead of a parry, where it is effective though is the jab cross which is always dead center and in line with your shoulder or palm.
    2. When you have your palm facing out you are in a less likely position to counter with a right of your own to negate the offense of others.
    3. When you over commit to parrying every punch that comes you will for sure get timed and either get your hands pulled down or get feinted into throwing that parry and opening up your guard for a counter left hook or a cross down the center.
    4. I hate that Erik didn't mention it but like I said you also need a sort of head movement doing the shell because when you are a smaller dude your shoulder is not stopping that overhand right from landing on your head unless you incorporate a slip or a duck in the defense because looking ay kevin when he is doing the windshield wiper that top part of your head is so open to overhands since it can go past the shoulder.
    No shame to Erik, he is a great fighter with good experience but his defense has alot of holes that isn't great for boxers of a higher caliber

      You got the video all wrong, it wasn't a boxing lesson. It was a condensed tutorial to add defensive facets to your MMA sparring.

    • @DubiousDubs
      @DubiousDubs 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, you're not totally wrong but I did just want to point out that some of those points are boxing specific. The reason there's no ducking and less slipping is because both these guys have to worry about kicks- gabriel varga has an excellent video about why you don't see as much head movement in kickboxing and MMA, but the short version is that it's easy to slam you with a kick as you're slipping or ducking.
      The rest of your points are pretty solid. I will say though, there is another way to deal with the hook that doesn't require just blocking it or ducking- Jeff Chan calls it a 360 block, or a palm on bicep. I see that used a lot in Muay Thai from the long guard, but no reason it can't work here.
