Anyone who plays an instrument (like me, who plays keyboards) notices the technical quality of Dimash's arrangements: In the part where he harmonized the melody with a funk-jazz arrangement he could use the classic jazz-bebop scale (with the augmented fifth) but, based on the positions of his hands on the keyboard and the sound, we can see that he enhances the music using inverted chords, increases augmented fourths and sevenths and explores variations of the mixolydian mode, these are complex chords that demonstrate what an excellent vocalist, musician, instrumentalist and arranger Dimash is!

Dimash is Dimash. You never know what he will sing and how he will sing. That's why its universality attracts people, because everyone will find something for themselves. If you want to see Dimash's sense of humor, I suggest the MV Be With Me. The music video is on his official channel. It's nice that you talk about the lyrics and look for a different approach to the song. In art, everyone can interpret what they see and hear differently in their own way. It's a folk song and Dimash turned it into Jazz.

💖🎼 Lots going on here. First the song, its author, meaning, success, journey to China, and growth in China. Second, Dimash and the song. Third this CCTV performance. I'll go through this stuff backwards.
One thing that's especially striking about this performance is that Dimash radically changed how he has performed in the past, choosing a jazz interpretation. He's got a masters in pop and jazz music composition, so in a way it's not surprising, but Dears were still surprised because he's never sung like that before.
CCTV is the national Chinese TV company, and they did this as part of a government backed Central Asian cultural connection thing.
[With, I'm sure, strict control of the political propaganda aspects and his performance. They typically require a recorded performance with lip syncing, despite sometimes officially claiming the opposite -- "always live!" -- so my guess is that that applied to this song.
After all, it's arguably a kind of subversive song in Kazakhstan, pro Kazakh and anti Russian, and it seems like Dimash said he was going to perform the Kazakh lyrics/story, not the Chinese version, so I daresay they would have been a little concerned even if Dimash has always been super careful how he's developing his public political position.
BTW, did you know he's had semi-private audiences with the leader of the largest christian sect, the pope, and the leader of the largest muslim sect, the grand imam of the sunnis, and with UN leaders, and the president of Kazakhstan, as well as cultivating popularity in Russia? He's ticked off about what's happening in the world, as you'll see when you react to The Story of One Sky music video, and he plans to do what he can about it.]

A few years after this song was written (around 1907?) it had exploded in popularity, with an equivalent of years at the top of the Kazakh pop charts leading up to WW1. Then, in 1916, the Tzar and Russian government conscripted essentially all able bodied Central Asian men they had control of, including all Kazakh males, to go the WW1 front, and within weeks there was the Central Asian Revolt of 1916, and its aftermath, during which hundreds of thousands of Kazakh families fled to China, spreading the song there, and hundreds of thousands of other Kazakhs died in the war and pogroms carried out by Russian soldiers executing those trying to flee from conscription of their men, with obvious associations with the song's meaning (discussed in the last section below).
By 1920 the song was everywhere in Kazakhstan and the nearest parts of China, and then in 1930 a Chinese specific version took off across the whole of China (which I think has different lyrics, not the ones he sang in this performance, but I'm a bit confused about that), and cemented the song's status as a Chinese song that's an all time favorite among the Chinese, alongside the Kazakh song that's an all time favorite among Kazakhs.
So it's a classic song in both countries, and many singers in both countries take it on, typically giving it their own unique twist given that it's a song that's been twisting and turning in meaning, delivery, and more, ever since it was first written.

The song's author, daughter of a Russian who moved to Kazakhstan, wrote about herself (in the third person) falling in love with a Kazakh boy around 1904. There's circumstantial evidence to suggest it's true, autobiographical, and that she wrote it a few years after she fell in love, when complications had kicked in that get alluded to cryptically in the lyrics.
There are tons of versions of the lyrics, none definitively the original, though presumably some are closer than others. Themes suggest conflict, conflict with authorities/bureaucrats about her nationality, the boy's, their respective religions, her dad's view of things, her wanting him to marry her, him being dreamy and/or non-committal, her being pretty head and heart strong, not wanting to settle with older Russian suitors, but also wanting to get on with life despite being deeply in love with him, urging him to get with the program, and so on.
The lyrics were also quite likely intentionally allegorical, or at least interpreted that way, about Kazakhstan vs its occupation by Russians, and subjugation by the Russian Tzar, and ambiguous friendship/tension with Russia, fueling both its initial popularity and its spread and longevity.
