  • This is my first time seeing Sam Harris. This was directly after Neil Degrasse Tysons "Stupid Design" Speech. Also the moment I had a moment of clarity 3:50.
Sam Harris speaks in between lectures and answers questions of his peers. I named the video "Fearless Among Peers" due to the people present while he was speaking. Roger Bingham, Steven Weinberg, Lawrence Krauss, Michael Shermer, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Richard Dawkins, Scott Atran etc.
These Clips are from the "Beyond Belief: Science, Reason, Religion & Survival" November 5-7, 2006. thesciencenetwo...

wrbluesuby And yet, given this clarity of speech, so many people fall down under the complexity of his arguments and start attacking a misrepresented view of his arguments.

wrbluesuby yes. Agree with him or not but just listening to him is very pleasurable. His sit down with cenk from tyt was epic. Watching his opponent disintegrate into hysterics and lose the argument by default when faced with this kind of calm intelligence.

    • @marinaproger2324
      @marinaproger2324 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hewkii I must disagree. Nothing complex here. People like reza aslan intentionally misrepresent his views and ideas. I think he lays everything out in very simple concrete terms that are fairly easy to grasp if u are willing to listen. But ur point still stands.

Passing the torch upward is still passing the torch.
Hitch, by the way, was a boss. He was a logical, critical thinker with a flair for dramatic and incisive writing and wordplay. Perhaps he wasn't the best debater on the planet, but I would argue that he was the best we had on our side.
Daniel L. Craig is no intellectual slouch; I can't help but feel Hitch performed better against him on the debate stage than did Harris. There is real value in the sort of rhetorical acuity and agility that Hitch wielded so gracefully, and we would be wise to remember that.

I guess I have some perspective since I was once a devout Christian. I know how it feels to tackle issues in life as rational and faithful person. However, at the end my rationality couldn't co-exist with my faith, one had to go or I would find no peace. It wasn't easy either. But in the end that's all that matters. We all try to do right by ourselves and each other the best we can. The least we could do is not make assumptions easy on ourselves.

[...] it is an introspective science of your own experience. The meditation and mindfulness aspects of practice of the 8 Fold Path are there to help you realise and understand your own experience by, not conforming to doctrines blindly, but discovering your 'self' and the nature of 'self' for yourself. In short, Buddhist philosophy is at it's core there as a tool to help you make your own mind up and alleviate the psychological conditions of the suffering we cause ourselves.

[the moment I had a moment of clarity 3:50] I almost cried afters this. You have a video to remember your "moment of clarity". Mine was in a forum on the Internet long time ago, some guy talking about the belief in afterlife, but I can´t remember exactly what he wrote or where it is. In an instant you get that hit in your brain, your entire worldview collapses and you reborn a complete different person, knowing that your life and the way you look to the universe will never be the same again.

i agree, or i'd rather believe, in the very least, of many of your points! however, jimi does make a good point in saying that there is a lack of evidence in some of the claims. your defense seems to be that in order to understand things such as other dimensions, one must experience them oneself directly. i don't have access to any drugs, and i had no luck with meditation (it just made me calm). what would you recommend me to do to have those spiritual experiences you mentioned?

I, upon growing into an 18 year old person who surfs around the interwebz have been persuaded by reason. Confucius' teaching emphasised on benevolence (loving fellow humans) and his rule: do not do unto others what you do not want others to do unto you. Confucian scholars/court officials, through the centuries, exhorted/counselled the emperors to love the people just like their own sons and daughters. The magistrates/judges of ancient China were, in Chinese terms "parental judges" (fu mu guan, in romanised pin yin).

No one is trying to argue that morality should be based on "societal norms". Sam is simply saying some social/religious beliefs are more dangerous and allow for harm more than others.
I would also like to point out that society IS harmed in your scenario. Limiting harm to individuals is rather fundamental to human survival. All actions have consequences and in your scenario there was a witness (the aggressor).

"...your dentistry comment was a simile,..."
Yes, that is exactly right. Straight from wikipedia on Simile (starred for emphasis):
"Unlike a metaphor, a simile can be as ***precise as the user needs it to be***, to explicitly predicate a single feature of a target or to vaguely predicate an under-determined and open-ended body of features. Empirical research supports the observation that similes are more likely to be used with explicit explanations of their intended meaning;..."

I've always been impressed with Sam Harris's wit and demeanor. Even if I don't always agree with his views, he always presents them in an approachable (albeit ascerbic) way

Your "reasoning" ought to as it is broken. Makes perfect sense and I don't believe many would argue with your statement.

I agree with SH that some people *have* been argued out of beliefs that they held without evidence, but I would make two observations:
    1) It's typically *not* something a person comes to instantly--sorry, there's too much mental/emotional baggage in the way. Usually people have to let the ideas "percolate" for a while.
    2) I don't think that percolating process has ever been *sped up* by giving someone those ideas--and in the process calling him/her an idiot. Disrespect faith; respect *people*.

He inferred it but it wasn't as specified as it was in the bible. It was abstract in phrasing but this is an accurate assessment that he did coin the idea (perhaps not first, years before him someone may have realized this) of the golden rule to the best of our knowledge first.

Being straight does not automatically make you beneficial to society either. You have to contribute to the society in which you live in one way or another, so that you effect a positive change in it. That is the only way you can class yourself as "beneficial" to society.

As a former Muslim, I was at first taken aback by his comments on how Islam compels people to violence. But he is right that Buddhist have not reacted in the same way to oppression. I think his argument misses a subtlety which upset many people, which is that it is not just Islam but also Christianity which provoke such action. The reason for this behavior is coded withing the genetics of the religion, that is the directive to convert others / justification of violence.

This can be done on grounds of personal experience, not based on arguing about words with provocateurs. For example, People who honor Christ in their hearts have survived cancer by 40 years. 1Peter 3: 15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you..

In this precise case, the reseon they get better results comes absolutly not from the religious aspect, but from the fact that the sociology of the pupils in those schools and in the public schools, are different (they can afford to pay), and it relies also on the fact that public schools get less and less budget, people go more and more to private schools, witch get more money etc.
