    The secular "elohim" is a ruler/judge. When the Torah mentions the "sons of the elohim" taking the daughters of men, it is referring to the sons of the ruling class sexually preying on the daughters of the people they should have been protecting.
    God is the ultimate ruler/judge, so the term applies to him as well. Note that the word can be either singular or plural based on the verb used. The Torah begins, "Barashit b-re El-ohim. . . ." B'ro is the singular version of the verb meaning "to create," so in reference to God it is singular.
