The Orangutans of Borneo - Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre

- I spent two months working at the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sabah, Borneo and It was one of the best experiences of my life.
We share 97% DNA with these amazing, playful and intelligent creatures yet they are on the verge of extinction. Deforestation across Malaysia and Indonesia is taking away their homes.
The Sepilok orangutan Rehabilitation centre and its amazing staff are doing all they can to help the orangutans, they raise and rehabilitate orphaned orangutans and their work has helped release hundreds back into the wild there are similar organisations on the island and they are making a difference but it is not enough.
But what can we do? The biggest threat is caused from our demand of unsustainable palm oil which can be found in so many products we use, if there is less demand then we can collectively make a difference.

I recently watched Meet the Orungutans and fell in love with these fascinating creatures. So lovely to see how much Beryl, Chiquita, Bidu Bidu and Peanut have grown. Oh and Ceria is still up to no good 😜

It's so nice to see that they have such close relationships with each other..they truly should still be with there momma's and you can see the hurt and sadness in the eyes..only thing that is helping is having each other
Yeaaaaa, Peanut and Chiquita have come such a long way! I remember how naughty Chiquita was when her babysitter, Ibry, would walk away. She was super co-dependent but look at her now!!

It's good to see these beautiful creatures doing well with the help given from these kind folks that have dedicated their lives to see that these apes get the love and nurture that was stolen from them. Not so long a go some of these babies were on the brink and to see them now like this awaiting to take their next step to be released to their forever home is incredible. A long road to recovery for these intelligent beings.

So very cool to see how Bidu Bidu (eating healthy), (climbing like a pro!), Boogie Boy, Rosa, Chiquita (more independent), and the other “babies” have grown & are doing so well. I would love to know how Mui Mui, Anne & her baby, Tuonduo (?sp) are doing. Thank you so so very much for sharing this with us. I know it’s a bit older video, but still it’s awesome to see how everyone is thriving & growing. Blessings!!!!

To the managers in the bornean orangutan samtuary...my request is plsss take all the orangutan from zoos. I feel pity on them. They have no freedom. Theur everyday life is sorrounded by people taking pictures laughing. I hate to see it. They have also the right to live in a peace safe place and they can do things what orangutan do lime climbing trees and others. In the zoos they are prisoners in cages walking in the ground and even doing things of what human do. Please take all of them and bring them to the bornean jungle with freedom.

That's impossible. The orangutans in AZA accredited zoos have never lived in the wild and don't know how to survive. Even the orangutans that have lived in horrible Thai zoos and circuses have an extremely low chance of being able to survive in the wild when rescued. There's a major difference between AZA accredited zoos and the roadside zoos and circuses that force orangutans to dress up and entertain visitors. It's illegal to keep orangutans as pets and to take them out of the country so the issue is not accredited zoos, it's the lax enforcement of laws, the illegal pet trade and govts that don't put an end to the inhumane roadside zoos.
Orangutans are so beautiful and intelligent, I cannot bear to think they are suffering to due to deforestation

Can they develop diabetes and high blood pressure also I love how they look almost human my heart 💓 goes out to all the little babies I know that all of them have some stories to tell cuz each of them have lost there Mom I don't know if it carzy or not but I do pray for them all I have fell in love with those precious animals thank you for taking care of them and I always pray 🙏😇 for you to God bless you always 🙏😇😇🙏🙌😇

I find it very tragic that buildings can be protected from restoration or even demolition. Why ant the forests be protected for the endangered species. Money is truly the root of all evil
I too struggle to understand how things can be so tragic sometimes, but we have to remind ourselves that a lot of this comes from ignorance and apathy in a society that can sometimes make us feel empty. But it's up to us as individuals to inspire, educate and promote social change and do anything in anyway you can to help this cause. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I ❤️ orangutans so so much. No I don’t want to own one or kill one’s mother to be able to steal the bsby.. people that own our precious primates are evil.. you know what I would love. To sit with a baby and give it hugs and kisses and just be so gentle with it. And I would love to lay my head on the shoulder of a mother orangutan and tell her how beautiful and precious she is and what a great mommy she is. That’s what I would ❤️ to do.. let’s stop all these horrible evil people who kill orangutans for whatever selfish reasons they have and protect them from all evil. We should all give to BOS and when we make our donations do it with our whole heart we can make a difference.. they are the most gentle and loving and sensitive of all the great apes. ❤❤❤❤❤I love orangutans

They are beautiful. But I don't like Sepilok. Because of the lack physical affection they give these beautiful babes. Orangutan babies not only want to hug and embrace there mothers/care takers, but it's an instinctive, natural, and emotional NEED. Especially when they are little babies. Age 1-4 are the crucial years. But Sepilok has this policy of little to no affection. Because they get attached to humans and once released in the wild might go up to dangerous humans. But the other rehab facilities strongly disagree. They hug, snug and cuddle the little ones, while still teaching them to climb and all the skills they need. Just like they would in the wild, the Orangutans become more and more independent as they grow. And they need that physical affection and hugging less and less starting at age 4. The human contact is minimized, during their waiting period to go to the prerelease island (about age 7). Once there besides coming to the feeding stations, they do not approach the monitors. Especially strangers. With few exceptions. .....Sepilok gives them care and teaches them. Holds their hands, while they lead them to the trees or ropes, or vet. But no hugging or cuddling. Not even the little babies who need it the most. They are fed their bottles through the cage bars, and MAY get their hands held if they are lucky. But no holding or embracing. It's heartbreaking and so obvious how desperately these little ones want to be held and snuggled. They don't even carry them front facing. They turn them around if they carry them at all. Or carry them by their hands. The videos of Chiquita and Peanut from a few years back is so sad. Poor frightened and insecure little Peanut needed so much to be held for a bit. (I understand keeping them focused on the lesson, but before and after they need held and hugged. This gives security and confidence). And Chiquita. She felt abandoned by Ibri. Imagine being a toddler and your Mother seemingly pushing you away. Yes..she needed to ween off Ibri and work with the others. But ironically, had she been given some physical affection from Ibri in the mornings, and been given hugs and cuddles from other staff growing up,..they wouldn't have this problem. Because Chiquita wouldn't have been so desperate for it from Ibri. She was losing what little she had, and was desperate to hang on to it. The cure wasnt to throw Chiquita in cage and leave. The cure would have been to hug and snuggle for a few minutes first. Then leave. Or hand her to another staffer who also would hug her a bit. Poor little thing. ...Yes these more grown ones LOOK okay and content enough now. But what's going on in the inside, especially when they are babies is a different story. They can't talk and speak what they are feeling or thinking. I know they obviously are not human babes. But they are very very close to it. As an Early Development Child Psychologist, and one who has studied and researched these similarities..it seems to me, the risk of emotional and psychological damage to these little ones, from denying them the physical affectionate contact,.. far outweighs the more unlikely risk that they would approach someone dangerous in the wild. I donate to the other rehab places, that give them not only the vet care and forest school training, but the physical hugs and affection they also need so very much. I hope and pray Sepilok changed its policy. 😔
