I really love the Mandinka video, honestly it holds up. Sinead's striking presence and her voice just soars! I miss both Mark and Kristy, but thankfully their influence is still felt today
Odd that they discuss The Stranglers' cover of a Kinks song, and have a bit of a general chat about cover versions, but don't relate that to The Fall's forthcoming release of their version of The Kinks' 'Victoria'.
I love the way she comes out with home truths. "People use videos to sell absolute rubbish". God, never a truer word and absolutely prophetic since the 80s! You could NEVER have a show like this from the mid-90s onwards. It's too critical and truthful. NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO CRITCISE (TELL TRUTH) ABOUT ANYTHING IN SHIT BIZ NOW! Pathetic and criminal, especially as all there ever IS to slag off as the industry is utterly full of shit.
I'll see what I can find. To be honest I never realised I had taped this until last week. I recorded it, mislabelled it on the video tape and then as I digitised the tape last weekend this recording appears, a forgotten wee gem.
I just started looking at this guy and his work and history. This is the most ''normal '' I've found so far. I find Mark a most fascinating individual a rare character. Thanks for this very much appreciated.
He couldn't be more wholesome! lol. It's like the other vid of him reviewing singles. he just kind of likes them all and says like one barely scathing thing. It's funny for his reputation, I find like 95% of his interviews on here are him in good spirits and the comment section is invariably 'wow Mark is in good spirits here' lol.
Great to see real people speaking their own mind, rather than saying everything is great. Would have liked to have seen the budget stretch to include a couple of remote controls for the guests tho, that wouldn't happen today would it! Cheers.
Decent video love mes and kirsty. Both missed And a Sad loss. Mark to much beer an whizz and lovely kirsty sadly lost her life to soon courtesy of some whopper🎉
Interesting time capsule that at this time they hadn't heard of Sinead O'Connor. They make fun of her name like everybody in the world wouldn't know it 2 years later.
I've seen a few of these 80s pop tv shows with him on it. In Morrissey's book he said he had to do it because The Smiths weren't getting any daytime radio airplay whatsoever (Just Peel at night time) so he had to 'promote' the band this way instead. Same situo for MES here probably.
I know some were Stranglers "All day and all night" Fleetwood Mac - Family Man Godley and Creme - A little piece of Heaven Sinead O'Conner - Mandinka So - Are you Sure?
lol toughest couple of judges to please, even calling xray spex dated but I suppose it was by the end of the 80s sounds fresh again now, late 80s had some really rubbish music I turned to the pirate stations for better stuff
100k on making a video (according to her 2:26). videos were very low overhead in those days. tons of money being a Music-video creator back then. everyone was so hilariously hoity. fun times in make belief.
MES had some very nuanced political opinions which don’t sit perfectly right with people on Left and Right, which is pretty on brand for the man. His concern wasn’t “refugees” in general. It was - whether you agree or not, whether he was accurate or not - that a disproportionate amount of immigrants fleeing dangerous countries were young men. He thought it was their duty to stay behind and defend their land, send the women and children to the safe countries and leave themselves till last. He also felt that the influx of immigrants could indirectly serve to further marginalise the white working-classes, to whom he identified with fiercely and championed. He was not concrete on this, it was just a concern. So yeah. I don’t particularly agree with MES on most of this, but i think it’s worth clarifying that MES wasn’t just a straightforward typical Daily Mail reader sort

Great !! Not seen this before ! Kirsty very lovely ! And Mark E Smith , a very handsome looking man in his youth !
Also Mick Brown , very good ! Never saw him until now !
Thanks for watching and commenting, glad you enjoyed this
Who'd have guessed we'd be sitting here in 2020 without these 2.
I certainly would never have imagined it.
A tragedy x
Me, I remember watching this and thinking in 2020 all these people will be dead.
Strange, Eh?
we are
RIP MarK and Kirsty.
Odd that they discuss The Stranglers' cover of a Kinks song, and have a bit of a general chat about cover versions, but don't relate that to The Fall's forthcoming release of their version of The Kinks' 'Victoria'.

Within 2 years they'd both done Kinks covers!

I'm noy sure what is "lyrically interesting" about "Victoria" though,
Mark must have been relaxed and comfortable here, , you soon knew when he wasn't.
Lovely photo of Richard Madeley in the thumbnail.
Thank you for uploading. I'm a huge Kirsty fan.
Kirsty MacColl will Always be absolutely gorgeous! ❤️🎶🙏🎶❤️
Absolutely!!
I always was was under the impression she was Irish. She was hot though God bless her soul

Mark was such a handsome dude before the drugs and booze ravaged him. It's hell what addiction will do to someone.
Thanks for watching and commenting
Groups with bass players with ponytails- out. Cheers Mark 😂
I love the way Kirsty talks, she's got a lovely voice!
Well said Kirsty about Fleetwood Mac
I like it that The Fall did covers.
Thank you for this. If you have Any more footage of these 2 it would be great If you shared it. Two great artists.

MES smiling, laughing, having a good time.
Back when artists were allowed honest opinions of their own before the Gary Barlow school of getalong flattened everything into a beige soup
Both kirsty & mark did kinks covers.
Mark E Smith looks like a young Richard Madeley here 😂😂
Brilliant
Just thought the same. Was Judy on keyboards?
I thought that 😂
I thought that was Richard Madley on the thumbnail.
Bloody hell, Mark E. Smith looks like Richard Madeley in the thumbnail.
Two tragic losses ! God bless them both
Ironic that Mark was about to release a Kinks cover!
RIP Kirsty
I miss the days when tv studios had house sparrows and seagulls.
Fair play to Kirsty. She held her own with the often-intimidating MES.
She had already worked with Shane and the Pogues. Surely this will have toughened her ready for Mark.

Richard Madeley
🤣. Im laughing but I do see the similarities

I don't understand why they panned the Stranglers after about 60 seconds😕
Just not fans I guess

Could you list the redacted videos? I couldn't tell what some of em was... which Sinead tune was it, for example...
I know some were
Stranglers "All day and all night"
Fleetwood Mac - Family Man
Godley and Creme - A little piece of Heaven
Sinead O'Conner - Mandinka
So - Are you Sure?
For a chap who thought interviews were embarrassing he didn’t half put himself about that Mark Smith.
MES is much more enjoyable to listen to when he's younger and much soberer.
That they made them walk all that way to push a silly stopper 😂 oh the days gone by
Stranglers cover? White Room, except the big baggy pants. Loved that record. My asshole brother threw it out.
It was a Kinks song that the stranglers were covering, All Day and All of the night
Sorry. It was white room by Cream.
When the hell was 'Family Man' ever a network smash?
That’s Richard Madeley. Nice try though.
The emperor has no clothes.
They didn’t like the brass section
