  • I decided to take the train downtown when suddenly a mystery express train appeared. I thought it was the Walnut Locust Express but it turns out this was a special express trip to AT & T. So after finding that out, I decided to ride on the entire trip.
    Year: 1982
    Car #: 528
    Model: Kawasaki B IV's S/E
    Stations stopped at:
    1. Fern Rock Transportation Center
    2. Olney Transportation Center
    3. Erie
    4. Girard
    5. Spring Garden
    6. Race/ Vine
    7. City Hall
    8. Walnut/ Locust
    9. AT & T (Broad and Pattison)

I'm 55 and back in the 70's and 80's this Phillies express would be standing room only. Ridership on the Broad Street line has been on the decline for years, much of it's rider base is still concentrated between Temple campus and Center City, and to and from Soith Philly. The Market- Frankford line still moves more people . The sad truth is about North Philly is most people take surface Bus Routes from North Philly to Center City die to the high crime rate. It's ironic that in the 70's the BSS was so neglected, poorly lit stations, they were smelly and damp and a breeding ground for crime, but you still saw more use than. Today, in spite of Septa's efforts since the mid 80's to improve the line overall, ridership continues to decline.

That express is a heart stopper with that speed, market street only travels 15blocks full speed, broad street express has like 35 blocks straight no stop 55mph , that’s blazing

Blue Light=Sports Express to AT&T Station. everyone knows that. Thank god they got rid of the British chicks voice. she was annoying. The express tracks weren't installed all at once. They were laid over decades. the rail bed was there though. idk why they didn't install the tracks when the line was built, but they didn't. The track speed for the express tracks is 70mph.

When I was a kid, the trains were always full. What happened? How can the city afford to have empty trains? I have to admit that I drive everywhere I go now. Guess I wasn't the only one who moved to the suburbs. All of the shopping, entertainment, businesses, neighbors, etc. used to be packed in the city. No longer true. I think a lot of the millennials are moving back for the universities and restaurants.

The Broad Street System is not built to it's full extent, so it's only full at rush hours.

I am 52, in the 70's when the Broad Street Subway was at its dirtiest, the trains were packed in either direction. I believe the heaviest use is between Temple University and City Hall. I remember joy riding on various Lines when i was a kid with my dad on a Saturday. We would ride the Subway to Olney and come back, if they had a Phillies game, the people who got on from Olney and the Northeast were in great numbers, the trains had standing room only. Ive said this on a few other posts, theirs no doubt in my mind this line runs at a loss nowadays. When it went in to service in 1927 it was a Godsend for residents that lived in the far reaches of North and Northwest Philadelphia. The Northeast had the Market-Frankford line. The Subway didn't need to be extended to South Philly, South Philly had its fair share of Trolley and Bus service back then. The Ridge Avenue line was at its time an effective short cut from North Philly to 8th and Market and all the Stores, today the Stores are all but gone, the Neighborhoods lining Ridge Avenue are all derelict, if it weren't for Temple University's expanse, their would be little to no reason for the BSL to be used. Im afraid it comes down to demographics, the Northeast part of town is on an economic downslide, as white flight continues to plays a pivotal role with the drop in ridership. Thoss who have relocated outside the City will now use other means of Transportation in to the City.

Out of all the non-NYC metro systems in the US, SEPTA got it right: Express tracks are necessary. You can't rely on just two tracks.

@The Channel of Random Videos Expresses ARE like NYC's expresses, only faster if you look and ride closely, I'm sharing this from experience riding the network including PATCO (1989-2005); public transportation is STILL the best way to go 'regardless' of the state of the city demographically speaking: since it's ALWAYS people related issues like crime, racial flights to the suburbs, NIMBYism, etc. I simply say
F**k'em ALL (excuse my french everything: toast, charley, horn, hens, kiss, fries, Mr French [😆]). . .if Jesus Christ ran every transit system throughout the nation, everyone would kill each other for first seats making like Zacchaeus (●Luke 19:1-10) because they don't want to go/burn in Hell for demographic put-downs on others ("I don't want to ride with THEM people!!!"): Jesus Christ invented public transportation by riding an ass, colt, donkey, mule: it's called humility, and you may quote me and pass it on. 😑🤨
