I love that this dance will allow anyone to dance it. In a lot of dance styles that I have observed, many of the dancers are usually younger than thirty. Still, at :53, you can see that there is one lady that looks to be older than all the others, and she's still dancing with the best of the best! WOOT!
WOW, so powerfull, so amazingly good. I just love it. These people are great at what they are doing. This dance is brilliant, the expressions on the faces of the dancers is great. Just lovely! Riverdance, YOU ROCK!!!
Im Irish American and this stuff makes me so proud of my ancestry. I think Ireland should always be in the Hearts of all Irishman and Irish Americans. Ireland will always be our home.
@@happyolddude I get so fed up with Americans who think they're Irish just because their grandparents went over to the USA to escape the potato famine. I'm Irish (Dublin) but I can't say I'm really proud of being so, Dublin these days is a kip, full of undesirables.
@laddibugg88 I agree, Jean cant be replaced but for this song I prefer Joanne's performance: she did capture that challenging, fierce and independant escence which I think Jean couldnt achieve by dancing to this song. Sorry for my bad english by the way.
That's, at least, the impression I got. Resuming all the blah blah from my other comments: I really see Jean more apt for this role, I think she was able to show the force and bravery of Irish women that this dance tried to represent.
I wish that whoever uploaded these videos, would upload the WHOLE show. I have the original with Michael Flatley and the New York show with Colin Dunne but I'd like to see the different dancers in the full show.
With Jean, instead, I see a brave, proud and independent woman, secure of herself, who is intelligent enough to know when is the right opportunity to wait and when to strike. And whose friends gather themselves to help her out of friendship and loyalty, and march with pride along. Finally when her friends are getting hurt, she tell them to back off and keep themselves safe, she can handle it alone. And she does, with her honour intact.
Jean Butler in my opinion has ALWAYSS been the best :) I wish i carried on with my Irish Dancing x Oh well :).. i used to know the stepps :) We irish rock ;P DuckeyyToast x
I agree about the majority of the Riverdance tapping being simple, but a lot faster and in sync. My teacher taught us the 'V' that they did in the finale and a bit of reel around the sun (the part where they start moving around the stage). I'm good with all the tapping that takes place on the ground, but as for the clicks and all that, I don't quite bend that way...yet xD
I have absolutely no problem with men standing up and defending women. That's wonderful. However, if a woman is being harmed by a man, is she just supposed to sit there and say "oh, another man will come along soon. I shouldn't do anything about this." Sooner or later she needs to know that she has the power to take care of herself too.
@skattynatty8 I still think the original with Jean and Michael (as arrogant as he apparently is) is still the best. There may have been better dancer since them as far as technicalitly, but no one (that I've seen) has had more stage presense than those two. They command it, and I think that's part of why the original was so exciting.
This might be because I don't have a history with Irish dance and therefore am unbiased, but after watching both this and the 1995 version I've got to say that this version is just a better overall performance. The aesthetics, the precision, the theatrics... Perhaps Joanne isn't as much of an icon or even a worse performer than Jean (some would say), but at least the set-up and the background dancers in this version I believe made for a more engaging experience.
2:30 Like being in a nightclub and there's a bunch of guys who can't take a hint and keep harassing you, 3:17 and then here comes your girl squad to back you up!
Elle est belle et talentueuse, mais impossible d'égaler Jean Butler qui est indiscutablement la meilleur , elle représente a elle seule L'irlande avec sa superbe beauté et ses traditions .
some people come with so much mental baggage that they see the glass "half empty" instead of "half full" ...but thanks for your comment...and come visit the USA
i dont think this is bad, defintily not as great as the one dublin but certainily not the worst ive seen. I actually real like the lead female in this. and i like this versionh of riverdance a lot, theres a lot more dancing and music thats really great
@hermionefan3 but I dont think either one of them are as good as Aislinn Ryan the newest girl to play the part. Check out Live from Bejin DVD. Shes amazing. Like dancing on water
Would you agree that the majority of tapping in Riverdance are fairly simple moves, only faster and in sync? I've tried without any training and I can only manage maybe two or three of the basic tapping moves. But I read that someone thought the girls were anorexic. ROFL! They obviously don't understand how much muscle this burns.
That isn't political. It's a dance that interprets the historical themes of Ireland. The battle between the sexes is a major theme in Irish mythology and lore, for example the rivalry between Cuchulainn and Queen Maeve, or the defiance of Grannia against King Finn. Ancient Ireland was a matriarchal society; It's part of our history and our lore. I was in Riverdance, I should know. Maybe you should educate yourself before opening your mouth and demonstrating your ignorance.
I think Joanne is the best Countess. Most of my reason comes from the end of this dance - where she is driving off the men. Jean kind of stomps them away, Joanne looks like she's actually fighting them, and driving them away. Way more believable for me at least. That and Joanne smiles and looks like she enjoys dancing. Jean was good, but Joanne was better.
@cameronthomasfan549 Heh, I actually think it's the dancer. Check out watch?v=CqQvUZ9SdhQ Dunno what year, but same dancer, slightly different choreography, different costume (which I like better; she looks stunning in that purple), and I like it so much better than the rest simply because of Jean's stage presence, which has increased since the original. Joanne's a lovely dancer, but she hasn't got that regal, slightly ethereal aura that Jean had and which was perfect for this dance.
This can't even compare to the 95 version with Micheal Flatly. Plus you can't even tell what the russian dancers are doing half the time because the lighting is so bad.
@jenchapple89 I always associated it with fairies mating season to be honest. I'm not sure if that's the meaning but its as if the men are fighting over the women.
Acutally, Irish dance is far more than "fast movements." Anyone who has ever taken Irish dance knows that the most important thing is to stay on beat. Soft shoe music does not allow for fast feet movements AND soft shoe is NOT fast feet movements. It's about elegance and grace. There are moves in soft shoe that require hang time - staying in the air. Please don't confuse hard shoe with soft shoe and then insult one of the best Irish dancers, who wouldn't be in the Riverdance if she was not good.
I differ. All I see in Joanne's performance is an innocent, shy girl, who gets scared and runs for help, only felling brave enough when is surrounded by an amount of companions than surpasses the number of foes. And only then, when her women failed, she gets a temper tantrum and finally fights her fight.
i really dislike these costumes, the ones from 1995 were so feminine and pretty, especially jean's, and joanne's costume looks like they ordered it from a halloween shop under the category "sexy teen witch" or something
I love that this dance will allow anyone to dance it. In a lot of dance styles that I have observed, many of the dancers are usually younger than thirty. Just lovely!
Riverdance, YOU ROCK!!!
Personally I don't care whether its Jean or Joanne as the lead. I just love to see the dance. Period. :)
Amy is now the new "Riverdance queen"! She's heads and shoulders even over those two!
@@johnskelton1117 shes great and that red hair cant get more irish than that!!

So are you American or Irish? You cannot be both.

Jean Butler has never been topped in this role. Ever.
I love Riverdance! And the Countess Cathleen is such a wonderful story!
have you read the play its based on?
Joanne is such an elegant and graceful dancer and lovely person. I was fortunate enough to meet her after one of the shows. Great video. :)
Joanne is my favorite..
Joanne is good too, but no one comparable to Jean really !! The 1995 version with Michael and Jean was pure magic !!
+ANDU REN Yep, she's good but still no Jean Butler...
I agree with you. The 1995 version is pure magic and remains the best.
@laddibugg88
I agree, Jean cant be replaced but for this song I prefer Joanne's performance: she did capture that challenging, fierce and independant escence which I think Jean couldnt achieve by dancing to this song. Sorry for my bad english by the way.
The footwork is excellent omg :')
Im learning this dance ,.. it's just a bit different , I love Irish dancing
Wow, this video is 13 years old already! What a year 2022 is turning out to be. God bless everyone.
Joanne wins hands down over Jean! But both are brilliant dancers!
the girls; that lightness!
Joanne Doyle , charming.
That's, at least, the impression I got.

Te llega la música y el baile, al fondo del alma y el espíritu, gracias
Love this tune :) The lead is brilliant dancer

I don't care for the color of the dresses but the dance is still as AMAZING as ever.

Im learning this dance ! :) I love making music with my feet , :)
Yep :) when I danced to it I found it harder to count to because of the rhythm, but its still a regular slip jig count and its beautiful

Jean butler casts a spell. It’s not explainable.
this is by far my fave dance the tune is class

Incredible!
Joanna Doyle dances like a Ballerina!
Interesting point, Jean looks more confident and sharp, but i think Joanne seems more agressive and fierce. Different performances indeed.
Love Riverdance
I like te riverdance it´s amazing
Awesome!!!!!
@buddygirl06 the first song is women of the sidhe, pronounced, I think, "shee". The second one is the countess cathleen.
Jean Butler hands-down.
I remember watching this when I was 5. Its still my favorite dance video. I have the video right with me but the VCR won't work :c
flawless ! like broadway should be. such a good show. like ... Riverdance.

1996 New York performance is the best overall I agree if we compare this one to the 1995`s performance.
Para mí Joanne Doyle es la mejor sín dudas

u should get it :-)

I think the problem isn't the color of the dress, but the color balance of the video. You might notice that their faces look rather orange.

Lol, I wanted to say that but the comments had been disabled. ..
je veux savoir comment je peut avoir cette music svp

Not as good as the 1995 version at the point theatre-that will always be the best to me.
@jenchapple89 no it is from an old myth. PM me and I can give you more info
And why in all blazes would you ever imagine that I would ask for or want someone like you to come to my defense in the first place?

Give credit to whom it belongs: Michael Flatly.
Please do proper research. So many people have a completely wrong impression of that arrogant egomaniac
