The 'Concours de Castells' takes place every 2 years in Tarragona, Spain and has had UNESCO World Heritage status since 2010.

i love catalan culture so much this was one of many cool things ive seen there, im from Quebec we facing similar cultural challnges also about preserving our own identity, hopefuly i go back soon

This tradition exists in India as well (in Maharashtra state). It is known as Dahihandi. These human towers come up during the festival of Janmashtami.

This used to be an event for school kids in Japan, too, but it’s been going out of fashion because of injuries.
These people train hard and plan intensely, with safety in mind, as the helmets for the smallest show.
How injuries pupils have in a school due Soccer, basketball, athletics... ? Maybe more.

In catalonia people speak more spanish than catalan
It’s ok we are bilingual and it’s easy to English speakers to translate from Spanish.

Truly beautiful tradition, but it seems it would be a lot safer to collapse the human pyramids layer by layer instead of allowing the whole thing to implode all at once. Just a thought.
That is the idea, indeed. Actually, only about 3% of the attempts fail, but most documentaries over represent falling towers because they are more spectacular, I guess.

When you see a fall from the stands it seems very shocking. It may even seem that someone has died, but I have friends who practice that tradition and they have told me that when there is a fall it doesn't really feel heavy,, all the weight of the fall is cushioned between many people
