Great flick overall, but needed more, at least 15mins to fill in and wrap it up. This new trend of leaving people wondering wtf happened next is frustrating
Agreed. I loved the whole thing except how it abruptly ended. The whole thriller aspect was great, even though you knew it was basically a cyber terror attack. I do like how Rose got to see the last episode of Friends. I guess we have to assume everyone else found their way to the bunker. I kind of see this being very possible. We already pit each other against ourselves, an it won't take much for that built resentment to go all out and we kill each other. The problem on the global scale that the perpetrators don't get is in a global market, having the largest economy taken out ruins the lives of the rest of the world, including them.
Usually I would say me too on your desire to see a part 2 setting in the urban areas but that would be very bleak. The setting in this movie is what gives the overall mystery about the film its biggest boost. Bunch of comfortable people who still did things like go swimming and getting drunk. A part 2 would not have any of the suspense in an urban setting. I can see the people getting very violent very quickly since there would be water and food shortages quickly.
Would happen?? It is happening!! Slowly, steadily increasing Why don't ppl see, Satan can't hide what he's doing Ppl jus don't pay attention to it all going on around them This movie is what the Bible means of LAWLESSNESS
@@crazysteve2395my feelings exactly unless there's a large transport vehicle coming towards someone or a bunch of deer staring at someone else, nothing actually happens in this movie. That could be fine if it wasn't acting like it was building up a bunch of suspense that ultimately lead nowhere as far as the interpersonal A-plot was ckncerned.
Symbolism or Coincidence; The story takes place in a town called Port Comfort, the name of the ship that ran aground is the White Lion. In 1619 the ship that brought the first Black enslaved peoples, the "Twenty and odd Negroes" to the British Colony of America was named the White Lion and it landed in Old Port Comfort, now Virginia.
Well since I was in Puerto Rico for Huricane Maria I know what it feels like not having any power, no network for months. You will get impress with how people will unite in moments like that.
Despite despising literally every character except maybe two of them and not liking the ending that much, I genuinely did enjoy this film for what it was!
hahha why despise? There are redeemable qualities or contextual aspects, that explain why they may not be on their best behaviour to all of them, except the handyman I guess.
@@wasdadennlos I guess despising is too strong of a word, but the various unpleasant traits and decision making skills a lot of them exhibited definitely fueled my dislike for them. I mean come on, who wouldn't dislike Ruth, the spoiled daughter who thinks the entire world revolves around her lol.
@@Sweet-Rat-Milk Ruth's annoying moment was when her complaint about the dad was that "he wants to fuck me". Esp since he never does anything creepy and she was the one that randomly asks him if he's ever fucked one of his students. I mean even if she were right if he's not gonna do anything creepy like his son did then who cares? And also hating on the daughter for basically minding her own business looking at the trees. The mom and son are legit awful, so lets come up with a reason why the father and daughter are just as bad despite doing nothing wrong. Like wtf?
@@wallysullivan9315she was lying/exaggerating to her father with the hope that he would be so enraged that he would kick the family out of their house…
Exactly! I've seen countless movies in the last ten years or so that had a great premise, as well as an intriguing 1st and 2nd act. But they seem to fizzle out on the ending. Or rush the ending as if they suddenly realized they were about to exceed the intended run time.
Thought it was amazing. Saw it in a dark room with stellar surround. The music has to be some of the best sound design besides Oppenheimer this year. It made me more nervous / stressed than any horror movies in recent memory. Also: three hoorays for physical media! Surprised Netflix had the balls to drop this.
too much tension... that it's actually frustrating... no climax whatsoever they just have given a bunch of fake climaxes but in actuality nothing is really being revealed or happening
The point of the ending had potential but hearing that song and the title credits was more funny in a wow this is lame way than intriguing/scary like it could of been. Look at Oppenheimer. That ending is 👌🏻
I found it to be very disturbing and it has me online right now looking for road maps to purchase. As for the ending - I think it symbolized Americans putting their heads in the sand, escaping from reality, but instead opting to watch bullshit TV and fantasy. There were a lot of racial overtones and historical references, ie. the radio station was on 1619, the year that Africans were brought to the US as slaves.
I felt like we were told , Rose was and will be the only survivor as her name is ROSE she was behind a red door symbolizing a red rose in the thorn home like a rose has thorns around it to live and be safe. For movie purposes I am sure killing off characters blatantly would have ruined this whole conversation and thought process happening online. The world collapsed Rose imo was saved by her God aka watching friends “I’ll be there for you”
Rose told her brother when they were in the woods, that nobody ever listened to her. And he told her she's probably right. Imagine how his story would have panned out if he took it upon himself to listen to her in that moment, and went to the house they were looking at. They wouldn't have had to even meet Kevin Bacon's character because that house's bunker was fully stocked with everything they needed. Including entertainment. That is why Rose ran away to the house alone. She was convinced that no one would listen to her, and she was tired of waiting to be heard, and tired of waiting to see the last episode of Friends. To me, Rose is the hero of this story.
She knew God was trying to give her a place for safety just like the story she told her mom. She goes to the Thornes house which represents protection like thorns protect roses. Last words of the movie "I'll be there for you"
Just watched it earlier and immediate got recommended to see your review! It could be better for sure, but I also kinda like how it's almost written like a play, with limited scenes, roles involved, and sometimes symbolic and vague lines. I'd say it's not amazing but also not bad.
well plays usually dont have three different scenes on different locations and jump around them. Well actually I saw a brilliant modern comedy that had elements like that, but they also had a much bigger cast than this movie. Idk whether it only exists in german language so far, but the title would be ,,the animal kingdom" if you happen to come across that one, check it out. Agree tho: masterfully paced script, with beautiful parall symbolism and also highly professional filmed and cut.
Shallow characters, slow pace, zero tension, and you can feel 1 hour in, there isn’t going to be a resolution, this is a series that they tried to make as a movie with an all star cast of unlikeable characters. 4/10 is generous, this was like an indie film with poor concept with the highest quality cinematography, which is not enough to save it.
I hated this movie the whole time. How many times did people see some crazy shit and beat around the bush telling everyone what they saw or say nothing at all. The whole movie was people knowing and seeing things and not talking about it. People wouldn’t do that irl. And small things like driving the car down the middle of the road when the teslas are coming head on…. When there is a HUGE shoulder 😂. Suggesting that they take their son to the hospital…. They were WAY past that point. And then the end, it was a movie trying to be clever but it just came off cheap. Surprised the plot and delivery had so many holes in it, because some of the dialogue was so good. I loved when the son said “you’re nostalgic for a time that never existed.” That’s some profound shit
The cars were crashing if they just waited then they’d never get on actual cement again. There was no huge free shoulder to drive on I’ve double checked. And people not being honest with each other and discussing things that can help them/others is a theme throughout and about us as a society IMO
The weird camera angles were annoying me only because they were trying in every scene. Some of it was pretty cool, but this is definitely a case of less is more. I liked the idea of it, but it just progressed in an unnatural way.
All the characters were supposed to be unlikable. I think a lot of people are going to miss the point of the film as it is a critique of modern America. Hence the title of the film, "Leave The World Behind"...
None of it seemed real, the scenes were awkward, there wasnt much plot, the script was terrible, the suspense went on too long so that i no longer cared. I liked the ending but I was hoping it was going to be revealed to be a virtual reality to explain how unreal everything seemed.
Spoilers*** I don't really enjoy films that spell everything out, but this one did both. It gave too much away at the beginning and then didn't answer any of the questions. It's like they threw a bunch of ideas at a wall, but none of them are cohesive. Cyber attack took out the country. Ok, possible. Also took out radio signal, ok, how? A few countries came together to take out satellites in space, ok how? We don't know. Why did the ship wreck, no gps? And computers? Can you not operate them manually? Why did the planes crash? Did they run out of fuel? If it was the computer thing, why did cars work, except Teslas? What was going on with the deer? Why did the boys teeth fall out? Was it really just a bug? Why was Kevin Bacon in the movie? You really think Korea and the Middle East are going to come together?
For the people disappointed about the open ending and unresolved issues. Well folks, that what this movie is about. This movies is not just for entertainment, but also to make you think. Because many of these issues continue to remain unresolved in our lives and the world, and instead of sticking together (as animals in nature do), we prefer to remain oblivious to them and immerse ourselves in screens. As the movies says, "the news got out, a boat was sent and then also a plane. What more do you want?"
I get it what it's doing. I just don't like it, and I don't have to appreciate it just because it was done on purpose. Likewise, just because it's trying to make you think doesn't mean that anything it had to say was actually thought provoking or insightful. I certainly didn't think so, anyway. I'm not bashing anyone for liking it, and I can at least agree that it was well performed and well-made on a technical level, but I really did not vibe with the story, it's characters or most of its messages. To each their own, I guess.
We don’t quite know who the enemy truly is. It may not be external enemies at all (ie other countries). It coul possible be internal factions despite the leaflets that are dropped… just a thought
We got work to do America and it starts at home. We have to get back on one accord. And we have to come to an understanding of what's really at play. What we choose to believe in as a country is powerful and we must get back to the understanding of that.
I thought the film was amazing. Excellent direction and score. I found the story filled with tension and interesting commentary on modern life and technology also
I can tell you've never watched apocalypse movies. This whole movie is just a black guy saying basic theories everyone knows and mini build ups that lead to nothing
@@Sauczithe problem is most of them are the same they all follow some of the exact same tropes no matter how good the story is . Here we discovered info with the characters and most of it was left up in the air in the end for the audience to imagine the ending . That’s the best part about it , not knowing , not giving some perfect or horrible conclusion.
I really am intrigued as to how people watch this and say it was good or even decent.. Acting seemed fairly crap. Yeah, tension was there all movie, but then the ending had NOTHING! All I could think is that they're going to have a second movie. Not good.
too slow, was not engrossed in the plot. If I am, I do not mind a slower pace, but the story didn't evolve or hook. Too much filler dialog. Started to be frustrated early on. I do not enjoy tense and slow moving pictures this clinical. The warfare concept was interesting, but the social commentary did not hit. Really great actors in EH and the black guy from Alita. Amazed they agreed to this project. 5/10
APOCRYPHA 2 ezra 5 behold, the days are coming when those who dwell on earth shall be seized with great terror, and the sun shall suddenly shine forth at night, and the moon during the day. 5 Blood shall drip from wood, and the stone shall utter its voice; the peoples shall be troubled, and the stars shall fall.[d] 6 And one shall reign whom those who dwell on earth do not expect, and the birds shall fly away together; 7 and the sea of Sodom shall cast up fish; and one whom the many do not know shall make his voice heard by night, and all shall hear his voice.[e] 8 There shall be chaos also in many places, and fire shall often break out, and the wild beasts shall roam beyond their haunts, and menstruous women shall bring forth monsters. 9 And salt waters shall be found in the sweet, and all friends shall conquer one another; then shall reason hide itself, and wisdom shall withdraw into its chamber, 10 and it shall be sought by many but shall not be found, and unrighteousness and unrestraint shall increase on earth. 11 And one country shall ask its neighbor, ‘Has righteousness, or any one who does right, passed through you?’ And it will answer, ‘No.’ 12 And at that time men shall hope but not obtain; they shall labor but their ways shall not prosper
I think that was just symbolic message of nature acting defensive and aggressive against a violent society. Otherwise not much of a reasonable explanation. Kinda dumb if that is the case
Tbh I think this is the weirdest movie I have ever watched. On one side the story is so captivating and draws you in and makes you lose track of time. But on the other side, the story tries extremely hard not to admit it's a basic plot. Several times switch the type of movie it is. 1) Knock on door and spoke to the family. Have the audience thinking they actually don't own the home they are invaders, so you immediately think it's some sort of horror movie. 2) Then the animals gather, the Spanish woman and the boy being bite by an insect losing his teeth. You start thinking it's a end of the world virus. 3) Scene in space that shows the satellite, specifically shot in a way to look like an eclipse, planes falling out the sky. Viewers start think end of the world again similar to "Knock at cabin" starring Dave Bautista. 5) No it's just United States under attack. With the worse ending ever. I rate it 4/5 for storytelling until the final 30mins. 5/5 for wasting my time with a plot that has nothing to do with animals gathering, eclipse or bug bite = losing teeth. Why try so hard when the movie could've said its the country is under attack and spend more time building on survival instead of the abrupt ending.
The only, and I mean only thing I didn't "get" was why the animals were gathering around staring at people. They basically said at the end that "they're warning us," but animals don't do that. They "warn" observant humans by doing what they were already doing by hightailing it out of Dodge from a danger zone as fast as possible. As far as the mystery goes, idk if it executed it really poorly or if it says more about me that I figured mire or less exactly what it was as it was happening. SPOILERS AHEAD: I was thinking from the beginning that it was a cyber attack, propaganda, and directed energy/sound weapons. The only thing I didn't know was by whom, and the movie wasn't interested in answering that question either (nor was it obligated to do so, for the record, which is perfectly fine). The mystery B-plot wasn't much of a mystery, and I felt like not a whole lot of interesting things were happening in the interpersonal A-plot with characters I didn't enjoy watching and spending time with (Mahershala Ali and Ethan Hawke's characters being the exceptions). That's not a criticism of anyone's acting. The acting was perfectly well done across the board. I just thought most of them were insufferable to be around.
@Tyler_W OK, I get what you're saying, I agree with most things except the characters. I think they acted the role very well. My issue was the script, I did think it was a cyber attack. But the movie purposely did everything to change the story during the movie. As you said, what does animal have to do with anything? 2) Why did they emphasize the bug bite to make us believe it wasn't radiation. 3) Why did they show the satellite and the camera angle? It made it look like an eclipse. 4) Why did they Ali client, not just say a war is coming, it's a flicking war not an asteroid or deadly virus coming to wipe us out. A war is not something secretive like the movie is leading us to believe. I can continue going with the number of parts that didn't make any senses. It just doesn't make sense that the movie took 2hrs 20mins to just say it's an attack when they could've done that since the 1hr mark and show more of how the families survive after finding out, instead of ending on the dumb cliffhanger.
Since Hurricane Maria we always keep solar powered lamps and chargers. At least one old radio. We learn how to purify your own water. Always have a machete or a gas powered chainsaw to help open roads of debri. If this ever happened first thing you need to open roads at least one for communication. It is difficult but when everybody is in the same situation help one another.
Why? Seriously? Why the girl ran away? Made sense to me... she felt the animals were warning them and she wanted to see where they were going and the bunker was implied that the deer were telling her to go
This movie should be called “The Karen family try to leave the world behind” DUDE the first hours nothing happens!!! and it annoyingly has the slow tension music thru out the movie where nothing is happening 😂 like the staring at the woods or the mom just looking at nothing omg. Even when stuff eventually does happen the pace is soooo slow. Yes it beautiful shoot and acted but geez I can’t stand the Karen mom and we fallow her most of the movie. It’s also lame that this is the type of movie where everything happened but we the audience don’t see it directly and it slowly effects the family around it. Like look that the city that on fire and shit going down but we’re going back to house lol yes it’s more close movie to show more characters but damnnn I don’t care about this movie and it’s #1 on Netflix nawwwww It’s solid but shouldn’t be #1. Can’t believe the first hour nothing happens geez
I think that the reason the daughter ran away was because her brother was really mean to her. He was a terrible brother. There was a scene where she said that she thinks no one ever cares what she has to say, and he literally said back “maybe they’re right” which made her think that people don’t care. And she was only 13, just a kid so she is still too young to understand things. So her brother made her think no one cares about her so maybe that’s why she ran away
Speak for yourself. She sucks, and so does the primary target of her hostility for that matter. More than that, the only people I wasn't annoyed at watching were George (Ali) and Clay (Hawke)
I just watched it last night. I agree the ending seemed a bit unresolved, but it was obviously intentional because you can see where it would go from there. I was slightly annoyed with the younger daughter, just walking off… And, like you said, I know it was based on a book, but it was very strange and frustrating. Overall, I really liked it. 8/10 for me.
Sure, where the story would go on the macro scale is pretty clear, but that part being open ended wasn't the problem I had with it. It was the lack of closure on the interpersonal narrative that bugged the crap out of me. The closure for tbe sociopolitical B-plot was fine. It was the interpersonal A-plot that dropped off a cliff because the movie decided it was time to be done.
As someone who adores the book, this movie sucked. To be fair to the movie, i think this is a story that works much better as a novel but there were still some baffling choices made in the film. The book is a lot more mysterious and ambiguous, and the ambiguity was a focal point of the story. I thought all the scenes with the boats and planes and characters getting concrete information just takes away so much of the tension and mystery and intrigue that the novel masterfully built… this movie Completely misses the point of the book, does its own thing, yet fails to make a point of its own.
@@jeffs6090 jeff, the point of my comment wasnt even that the book was better. My point was that the movie sucked. And not only did i list the things i thought the book did better and why, i also listed a few things the movie did that i think did not serve the story. As someone who read the book, of course its going to influence my opinion of the film. But its disingenuous to say that im just complaining about the movie not being as good as the book, when im just sharing my honest thoughts and critique. Its not just that the book was better. I just think this movie sucked because it veers pretty far from the source material and in my eyes it fails to justify those decisions. I think it tried to be its own thing leaning on the book more for inspiration and i respect that but i think it failed at what it tried to do.
The playbook of 1) isolate people 2) remove basic necessities of life and 3) watch as they kill each other off is what happened to the Native Americans, Palestinians, but they didn't kill each other off. People on average aren't as evil as those perpetrating bad policy.
I agree with your take. The opening dialogue was *terrible* and I couldn't believe I was hearing Julia Roberts speak those lines. It became a really interesting movie with striking and some memorably nightmarish scenes and concepts-very Mr. Robot overall, so Esmail was the perfect director for the story. But what did it add up to? We got an explanation of what was most likely happening. I appreciate the concept of the viewers being as in the dark as the characters are; that aspect works for me. But some elements don't make any sense, such as the deer (How are they affected by chaos and the Internet and cell phone networks going down, and what are they doing??) and the teeth-was it the tick that bit him? Was it the piercing sound? Was it witnessing the tanker crash? Too many elements were thrown into the story. But the kid was pretty awful to his just-fine sister so I knew something bad was coming his way... The final scene did annoy me. The movie was long. I checked a couple of times while watching to see how much time was left. I knew the end would come soon. But the choice of where to end it...very frustrating and unsatisfying. I guess the girl is in the bunker for as long as the generator and Cheetos last and all her family are either deer dinner or saved by the angelic ruminants. To be fair to Esmail, I read Goodreads reviews of the novel and many people despised it because of all the same elements-the nonsensical deer stuff, the way it ends abruptly with no resolution and not really pointing toward any. Several even said it felt like the publisher published the first half a novel without the second half, and the movie does sort of feel like that. For something so bleak, I enjoyed it a lot more than Black Mirror, Bird Box and Don't Look Up. It may have been aiming for something like Melancholia, except addressing misanthropy instead of depression. If so, then it really didn't come close to reaching that bar. My takeaways will be the striking ship scene and the Teslas slamming into one another. Both are striking visions and plausible-ish if telecomm networks were to suddenly go haywire or crash. The airplane felt gratuitous mainly because it was a second version of the ship and, like the family, the guy just ran away and didn't seem too traumatized by what he witnessed. The deer, the flamingos...a little disturbing but completely nonsensical given what was supposed to have been happening. Computer networks were hacked, satellites taken out. How did this drive animals crazy? Did it turn a tick into a radioactive spider-critter? I wish the screenwriters had pared down the 'freaky things in nature' stuff for the movie given that this apocalyptic scenario was meant to be tech based and not ecological.
For the record, I didn't like this movie, but I can answer at least some of your questions. The bug bite was a red herring to leave the audience with multiple possibilities for what could have been causing his illness, but the clues were all there, and the pepper finally tells the audience what caused it. It's a directed energy/sound weapon, and yes, this is a real thing. The guy in the movie mentioned it being used in Cuba, and maybe it was, but I remember hearing something about that in the Egyptian revolution. Actually, former on-the-ground journalist Tim Pool mentioned it being used in a recent Timcast IRL podcast, (which is probably one reason why I kind of guessed it as it was happening in the movie). He mentioned some live reporting he did on the revolution for VICE back in the day (I think it was VICE anyway). It somehow uses microwaves to incapacite, terrify, and disorient the targeted population. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but the deafening sound is at a frequency that can practically drops you immediately, and some of the potential side effects of the radiation are nausea and even teeth falling out in extreme cases. It's basically a nasty crowd control (or crowd agitating) weapon used by military and police. I'm not certain, but it may have even been used in the US in some limited capacity in the not so distant past if I'm not mistaken, but don't quote me on that. I'm also not sure if it's purely nonlethal or if it could also be used lethally. At least based on all of the evidence the movie provides, that seems like the most obvious answer. Whoever's using drones to blast this microwave weapon is doing it to cause chaos, confusion and panic for the purpose of accomplishing what George was talking about at the end of the movie. The only thing about this movie that made absolutely no sense to me was the deer. I think I get the point, but the way it executes that point was just bizarre. Ruth said "they're warning us," but the way they did it just seems weird to create an artificial sense of mystery that doesn't acthally make sense (unless deer actually do this sort of thing and I'm somehow just not aware). The way animals "warn" people about looming danger is if humans arw and observant enough to see them getting out of Dodge in droves as fast as possible, which they were already doing in the movie anyway. The whole stopping, surrounding and staring at people part just felt unnecessary and contrived, like it went that extra step just to be extra spooky and to lead people down a false rabbit trail in order to prolong the mystery. The deer and birds fleeing made sense, but the deer standing about was a stranfe red herring that had nothing to do with anything that was actually happening. There was nothing about the technology that was causing them to behave this way.
This is one of the best video breakdowns that I have seen of the movie so far, you were fair and, very honest, you didn’t go on a tirade about race, schism, and all of the foolishness that everyone else is doing to get clicks, you have a new subscriber for life, my friend
Gotta personally disagree on this one. I can appreciate certain aspects, but I just thought this movie blows. The acting was perfectly fine. It was interestingly shot, and I kinda liked the suspenseful music, but a lot of the interpersonal drama felt really forced, and a lot of the social commentary just felt trite. For a good chunk of the middle of this movie, I felt like most of the suspense was coming from the music and the cool shot conposition/framing more than from what was actually happening on screen. Yeah, those are good and effective things to have in order to amplify feelings of suspense, but they should be a compliment to the story, not the source of that suspense. The only time I felt real, prolonged and well earned suspense was when George and Ruth showed up that first night, and we had the whole "are they legit," "can they be trusted" bit and when the three men had their negotiation standoff at the end. (The Open House was another recent dull suspense movie that had a similar problem with unearned tension and music-driven or character/event-driven suspense imo.) I like plenty of deliberately paced movies that largely involve characters doing little more than talking to each other, but I found myself far more interested in the sociopolitical stuff they were talking about happening off screen than I was interested in what was actually happening in front of me. I think that's probably because all of the characters except those played by Ali and Hawke were incredibly irritating and not enjoyable or engaging to spend time with. Again, nothing against the performances or the performers, but i frequently felt the urge to yell stfu to the characters played by Roberts and Myha'la in just about every scene they were in, and the kids were kind of awful for no reason too. It felt like all of this suspense culminated into pretty much nothing with no real closure to the interpersonal side of the story. That may have been the point, but that doesn't mean i have to like it for doing that on purpose. I "get it," in fact, believe it or not, I kinda figured out exactly what was going on as it was happening, so the mystery just wasn't much of a mystery to me, but maybe that says more about me than it says about the movie itself. It can still be fun to watch characters fogure out a mystery you already sussed out for yourself, but I just didn't think the characters were either likable or interesting enough for me to stay lnvested. Maybe I would have liked this a little bit better if it was sborter and if it didn't end so abruptly. Tbh, it definitely felt like predictive programming, and I really hope that doesn't become true, but nothing would surprise me at this point. If you and others genuinely liked it, that's cool. I just couldn't vibe with this one.
Hell no. I’m the guy that praised the ending to Uncut Gems for months when people hated it, but I felt no form of satisfaction with this finale. Nothing.
I give it 2.5/3 Stars (out of 5). Filming and production was good, but story and character were dull. Didn’t connect with anything and don’t think it brought anything new to the post apocalyptic genre.
I’m confused when people say the ending was open-ended. It wasn’t, imo. It eluded to what was going to happen next: the dads agreed they were all in this together, said they needed to make it to the bunker. Rose, on her own, found said bunker. The other ladies were already on their way to the house, where they’ll find rose, thus finding the bunker. It’s all laid out 😂 now what happens after that would be another movie 🤷🏾♀️
@@shawnashape2909 are rustin and american symphony also predictive programming due to their involvement? Barack loved the book this is based on and goes into detail on why he likes it. If you know it's predictive programming, then you somehow know this is going to happen? Why wouldnt the more intelligent author who tried to write a book about this current day also know?
I wonder if the color blue means something on the movie? I was almost distracted by how much blue there was: clothes, signs, cars… even the filter of the film looks kinda blue-ish 🤔
Many people miss the point of this movie. It isn’t about why the world ends…it’s about us. Our behaviors. I think the movie makes this very obvious…..and it’s an excellent movie about behavior.
Started off strong then turned him into an itch after the first person challenged him. If he was a real one he never would have left the house and would have blasted those dude’s as soon as they refused to leave or better yet he would have been in the fucking amazing bunker that he told them about. They intentionally made him less than.
While watching the movie, I thought it was good, but when I got to the end I realized it was pretty bad. The ending was just awful and left tons of loose ends. The characters were unrealistic and made questionable decisions. There was even some racism that was allowed to feature: the black girl literally said "we shouldn't trust people, especially not white people", and at some point tried to guilt-trip the white family by accusing them of not trusting the black family because they are black and the white family is racist, which very obviously was not the case. Some scenes were also completely unnecessary like the awful dancing scene and the self-loathing monologue from Julia Roberts.
Do you really need to spoonfed a more clearer ending? we dont need to know what enemy this is or anything else. we got all answers on why things that happened in the movie were happening and what it was. the movie was more so about how the current state of the US and how we are would go if something like this would happen. the ending was fine.
In my opinion the ending is pretty clear. With Ruthie's explanation of how the series friends depicts a false reality that never existed. The final episode being played out at the end of the movie shows that our own false reality is over. And now we're all stuck trying to survive with the true nature of ourselves.
This could have been great if they didn't spend the budget on some e-list names and renting a biggish house. They were obviously in the writers strike time but wow what a disjointed mess they made of it. 3/10
I thought this movie was awful. The screen writing, plot line, and general progress of the movie was shocking. I couldn’t believe it. The movie spent its whole time building up to what could’ve been covered in 5 minutes. It showed nothing about the black out. The theme of the movie could’ve been executed so much better. Some of the dialogue was absurd. The daughter randomly asking the teacher if he’s “the type to fuck his students” lol. Who in the right mind would add that in as random dialogue. The ending of the movie is absolutely ridiculous. Completely tacky and lacks no common sense. I haven’t seen a movie this bad in years. So overrated. Completely unresolved.
I really, really liked this! The ending was great. This won't be for everyone because it is a slower burn, but I loved the messaging and mystery behind it all. The cast is great and the cinematography + directing is top notch. This movie has strong messaging about the importance of trust, alliance, 2A, preparedness, don't rely on/trust the government, and why city people need to get a lesson in country every once in awhile. The central theme is how governments and adversaries use the idea of "divide and conquer" to collapse societies and cause implosion. I thought this was great, a movie about the importance of moderation. (And I saw someone who mentioned this movie is also an example of how we are too comfortable and don't appreciate the actual important things in life. The important things in life aren't junk food, TV shows, movies, or social media...the important things in life are faith and family. Humans are amazing.)
Totally understood Rose running away. Nobody listens to her. Nobody cares for her feelings. She saw the signs. She is curious. She understood the assignment. She is tired of waiting. She is on a binge-watch. She is yearning for someone who is there for her 'when the rain starts to pour'...
I liked it. But it also made me apretiate living in western EU, Portugal, where people trust eachother. The distrust and lack of comunication between characters felt weird to me. Different culture i guess. Or maybe it's just Netflix miss representing actual normal americans idk
After I noticed that Michelle Obama was an executive producer for this movie…. the storyline made total sense. This movie was OK, but it was nothing special…in the scene almost at the end with Kevin Bacon saying what he said with his shotgun and the American flag over his shoulder… they were making a statement with this movie basically that if mega Republicans could take over the United States, this is the way that they would do. It .. this is pure propaganda.
Nope that’s not what is being said. You’re literally proving a point about what this movie is saying. You’re taking preconceived thoughts (Obama involvement) and seeing maybe one thing but missing other things that don’t align with your worldview.
I'm 45 minutes in and I'm having a hard time with Julia's character. She is so unlikable. It's ok to have a person who just isn't nice, but I'm thinking she was miscast for this specific character.
I loved the ending! Smoke 'em if you got 'em. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what happened. It happened and there isn’t anything to do about it. Rose got to eat a bunch of junk food and watch the end of Friends.
Just watched it today. I really did not like it. It was long, a slow burn with no satisfaction. Characters were weird, dialog was stupid at times. I enjoyed the cinematography, the sound design and score. The editing was kind of forgiving. I would only keep an hour of the whole footage and make it more condensed. But Netflix is all about the watch time, longer is better for them. I had to watch a few episodes of The Last Of Us to forget about this bad movie.
If something like this were to happen, like any other parent, your focus would be how do I keep my children alive! I think we all know something big is going to happen in the future, when? No one really knows. But I think we all know it!
I feel like this movie is only good if you’re American… otherwise it was boring. Realistic approach to the downfall of America, there were a few logical filming errors, found myself noticing flaws in the shooting because I was bored.
I really liked the atmosphere and acting in this movie, but god damn that little girl annoyed me. They know some fucked up shit is going on an she just decides to go to some random's house, it's just completely ridiculous
I don't know why people hate this film. The only reason seems to be that there appear to be 'woke' tropes, but I think the film provides satisfying conclusions to all the stereotypical conflicts set up at the beginning. If it was typically woke the black characters wouldn't bond with the whites, the prepper would have shot the intruders etc etc. I think Americans expect and believe that everyone WOULD end up killing each other through suspicion and paranoia but that simply isn't normal human behaviour
In the opening scene with the words 'Leave The World Behind' I think it's ironic that the white paint flow upward. To me it represents the Righteous Ones ascending before all hell broke loose
Is music like product placement now on Netflix? The music was so out of place in this movie. Rap. Then pop. Then random Backstreet Boys. This was like have Marshmallow at the end of Old Guard.
@@nothingsurprisesmeanymoreI thought the film did a good job of keeping us wondering and always on our toes just like how we would feel in real life from a cyber terrorist attack. Never having the information we need. We always rely on our phones for daily life and when that is stripped from us it is very easy to panic. The film also slightly mentions the divide in America and how they wouldn’t have to do much. We are already all so divided and against each other they just let us go to town on each other. Like the last step of the plan and recipe used for taking down a government. I know there are some problems with the film but I thought the concept was cool. I liked the show revolution a lot which has somewhat of a similar concept to this film. So does Mr. Robot. What was it that you didn’t enjoy?
I won't say it was a complete trash But it wasn't great either. It's just something you can kill your time if you don't have anything great to watch in your watchlist while waiting for your anticipated ones.
@kristinbeck6659 I personally think it's to hint to different possibilities or potentially real ways it could happen. For example if Ai, was behind it, it's possible nobody would be in control. Or it could be saying nobody in the country (including gov.) had control of the situation or what was happening to them. Either way, very scary.
I thought the resoolution was FAAN%ASTIC!!! Narrative wise it makes perfect sense and they were building up to it. My problem with the movies are thos 2 or 3 monologues over explaining the "Moral of the story", hated that, felt very condescending and I feel movies are doing that more and more. Other than that, they never in the movie promised straightforward explanations cause it really is not about what's happening, but about the people we are following in these events. The ending is basically a big fuck you to all and it works, cause no one really knows and we the public are no different either. So, if no one knows, no one can do anything, just sit back, relax and enjoy the few simple things you have left to grab on to, like a damn sitcom, cause really, it doesn't matter, and there is no reason for hope.
Mr. robot i my favorite show ever made. I kove Sam Esmail so maybe im biased but i absolutely adored this movie. The scene where Ethan Hawke was begging for his son was incredible. The Holdovers Oppenheimer Leave the World Behind My favorite movies of the year
I loved this movie, it was so good. It kept me on the edge of my seat and really got me thinking. And incredible acting too. I love Julia Roberts she is a great actress. The way it ended I think there will be a sequel, there is still more to see for sure
i loved the first half and found it really interesting but at least to me the second half wasn't that interesting and went in a really basic direction, but really liked the cast and they made that 2nd half at least watchable, overall i'd give it 3 stars
Great flick overall, but needed more, at least 15mins to fill in and wrap it up. This new trend of leaving people wondering wtf happened next is frustrating
They can’t make decent movies with good endings anymore
Pretty sure what happens next is quite obvious. The obamas did a great job.
Maybe a second part is in the works.
People not knowing what’s gonna happen next is the whole point… like real life
Needs a part 2 seperate from the characters of the first film but have another cast at a grounded level. Would love to see a family in the urban areas
Absolutely, can't even imagine how it would affect a city.
Part 2? Lol no. With the author threw the draft of the book away before publishing.
@eddie657 well you saw the city skyline near the end. Just bombs and gunfire, pure chaos. Definitely a different type of movie if that was the focus

The fact they used all the weapons that were thought to be conspiracy theories 10 years ago that have all turned out to be real weapons is pretty cool

Symbolism or Coincidence;
The story takes place in a town called Port Comfort, the name of the ship that ran aground is the White Lion. In 1619 the ship that brought the first Black enslaved peoples, the "Twenty and odd Negroes" to the British Colony of America was named the White Lion and it landed in Old Port Comfort, now Virginia.

Yeah she should have watched Breaking Bad. Friends is so lame.
I feel a lot of shows and movies these days have a hard time landing the ending.
Why can't Hollywood stick the landing. The ending was awful.
Exactly! I've seen countless movies in the last ten years or so that had a great premise, as well as an intriguing 1st and 2nd act. But they seem to fizzle out on the ending. Or rush the ending as if they suddenly realized they were about to exceed the intended run time.
It was based on the book so it followed the books ending
They have had troubles with the beginnings, middle and end really.
The reason the ending was awful for many people is because it was uncomfortable.
I saw in cinema and the sound design was epic.
The thriller aspect was great. Even though you basically knew it was a cyber terror attack, the music and cinematography made it suspenseful!
Oh that's what I was feeling I don't like when they make me anxious like that !!! Im already have anxiety 😅

So much symbolism.
Also The White Lion is the first ship the slaves were brought on.
Why did they make these slavery references?

I felt like we were told , Rose was and will be the only survivor as her name is ROSE she was behind a red door symbolizing a red rose in the thorn home like a rose has thorns around it to live and be safe. For movie purposes I am sure killing off characters blatantly would have ruined this whole conversation and thought process happening online. The world collapsed Rose imo was saved by her God aka watching friends “I’ll be there for you”
The director said in his mind, all of the characters make it to the bunker with Rose

Just watched it earlier and immediate got recommended to see your review! It could be better for sure, but I also kinda like how it's almost written like a play, with limited scenes, roles involved, and sometimes symbolic and vague lines. I'd say it's not amazing but also not bad.
Good review
well plays usually dont have three different scenes on different locations and jump around them.
"stacked cast" = "2 stars from the 90's"
apparently
Shallow characters, slow pace, zero tension, and you can feel 1 hour in, there isn’t going to be a resolution, this is a series that they tried to make as a movie with an all star cast of unlikeable characters. 4/10 is generous, this was like an indie film with poor concept with the highest quality cinematography, which is not enough to save it.
The cinematography wasn't all that either, the camera was just moving around a lot.

I don't really enjoy films that spell everything out, but this one did both.
I agree
I thought it ended very clean and satisfying. Everyone will ride it out in the bunker. Movie was tough!

Can someone explain how a cyberattack caused the deer to act so weird?
SPOILERS AHEAD:
I was thinking from the beginning that it was a cyber attack, propaganda, and directed energy/sound weapons.
Ethan hawke's looking like Doctor strange.
It’s also lame that this is the type
of movie where everything happened but we the audience don’t see it directly and it slowly effects the family around it. Like look that the city that on fire and shit going down but we’re going back to house lol yes it’s more close movie to show more characters but damnnn I don’t care about this movie and it’s #1 on Netflix nawwwww
It’s solid but shouldn’t be #1.
The mother character is symbolic… we tell ourselves we hate how she acts but deep down we have more similarities than differences
She was drunk the whole movie and tried to bang the new guy on day two
Speak for yourself.
Agreed 💯
Soooo, kind of like every movie adaptation of a book. This same comment is seen about every movie that comes from a book. "The book was better!"
🥱
@@Allgloss312that’s your opinion clown
"book was better, movie sucks 🤓🤓🤓"
The ending was perfect... do you really want it all wrapped in with a bow?
They will have to survive together as "friends" ...
Can’t believe they didn’t have a bunker in that house with the prepper contractor.
I believe that what they mean by the use of the term “open-ended” (or similar to it), is a “lack of closure”. There’s a big difference.
@@J98P02 oh you mean like how everything resolves? Such as the hack, etc.?
Not too sure how I feel about an apocalyptic film produced by a former President and First Lady.
Right!?!??? Few caught the predictive programming..
Literally had to rewind to catch they are executive producers! Thought I was seeing things.
So in other words a bully just got knocked in the teeth
I wonder if the color blue means something on the movie? I was almost distracted by how much blue there was: clothes, signs, cars… even the filter of the film looks kinda blue-ish 🤔
So did the bug bite or radiation or both get Archie sick and cause tooth-loss?.
Many people miss the point of this movie. It isn’t about why the world ends…it’s about us. Our behaviors. I think the movie makes this very obvious…..and it’s an excellent movie about behavior.
"What would you do if something like this happened?"
*Me, literally Kevin Bacon's character.
Started off strong then turned him into an itch after the first person challenged him. If he was a real one he never would have left the house and would have blasted those dude’s as soon as they refused to leave or better yet he would have been in the fucking amazing bunker that he told them about. They intentionally made him less than.
@@NuanceNotesThat's true! I wondered why he didn't just take his family into that bunker himself especially after knowing about it
While watching the movie, I thought it was good, but when I got to the end I realized it was pretty bad.
How was that racism on the part of the black woman? Ummm black people have a legitimate reason to be concerned when it comes to white people
If it was all man made event, what was up with the animals ?
Do you really need to spoonfed a more clearer ending? we dont need to know what enemy this is or anything else. we got all answers on why things that happened in the movie were happening and what it was. the movie was more so about how the current state of the US and how we are would go if something like this would happen. the ending was fine.
In my opinion the ending is pretty clear. With Ruthie's explanation of how the series friends depicts a false reality that never existed. The final episode being played out at the end of the movie shows that our own false reality is over. And now we're all stuck trying to survive with the true nature of ourselves.
This is absolute bullshit and the whole movie sucked.
Cinematic parallels in this film really are just incredible.
I liked it. But it also made me apretiate living in western EU, Portugal, where people trust eachother. The distrust and lack of comunication between characters felt weird to me. Different culture i guess. Or maybe it's just Netflix miss representing actual normal americans idk
No, that was a pretty accurate depiction of Americans.
Hollywood has a mix of not knowing and hating everyday Americans. They really hate small town white people.
Thought the cinematography was too busy. Liked the story and the acting across the board.
Anyone else notice the painting changes?
If something like this were to happen, like any other parent, your focus would be how do I keep my children alive! I think we all know something big is going to happen in the future, when? No one really knows. But I think we all know it!
The aesthetics, music, and cinematography gave me M. Night Shymalan vibes.
And dialogue
I feel like this movie is only good if you’re American… otherwise it was boring. Realistic approach to the downfall of America, there were a few logical filming errors, found myself noticing flaws in the shooting because I was bored.
me too
You are like rose wanting to know the ending
This is just the Twilight Zone episode "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" with a bigger budget.
That's what I thought.
I think you forgot to mention Kevin Bacon. Legend
Just watched it, complete waste of 2 hours. A stacked cast doesn't make a good movie
In the opening scene with the words 'Leave The World Behind' I think it's ironic that the white paint flow upward. To me it represents the Righteous Ones ascending before all hell broke loose
It seemed directionless after the second half
Is music like product placement now on Netflix? The music was so out of place in this movie. Rap. Then pop. Then random Backstreet Boys. This was like have Marshmallow at the end of Old Guard.
I LOVED the “Misled” song by Kool and the Gang!!!
That was probably my favorite movie on Netflix this year. Solid 8/10 from me.
You spelt 3/10 incorrectly
@@nothingsurprisesmeanymore 9/10 at least in my book
Are serious? You're the reason why they make trash films like this.
I won't say it was a complete trash But it wasn't great either. It's just something you can kill your time if you don't have anything great to watch in your watchlist while waiting for your anticipated ones.
Am i the only one who had to lower the volume when it came to the noise?
Right and why did George make a whole big monologue earlier about “there’s no one in control” like that’s MUCH scarier
I found it predictable and kept saying duh at every "revelation". "We need to go to the hospital and get a Doctor!!" OMG wake up woman!
Kevin Bacon gave me the chills.
The Holdovers

My favorite movies of the year
Solid 8/10. Good cast, interesting enough story. The Deers though, they stole the show.
The movie “goodbye world” did it better even down to the preppers and medications in the movie.
I loved this movie, it was so good. It kept me on the edge of my seat and really got me thinking. And incredible acting too. I love Julia Roberts she is a great actress. The way it ended I think there will be a sequel, there is still more to see for sure
Nah this movie was terrible with a bunch of woke nonsense
i loved the first half and found it really interesting but at least to me the second half wasn't that interesting and went in a really basic direction, but really liked the cast and they made that 2nd half at least watchable, overall i'd give it 3 stars
