This anime is crazyyyy. It's not even long and yet they showed SOOO MUCH!! The deaths, the hardship, pain, lose, anger, confusions, burdens, and loyalty. It's so deep, u can literally feel everything going on from the episodes in ur heart. I love this anime so much. This is a realistic story when it comes to showing about TRUE loyalty and the toll of a life around war (aside from the oni and supernatural parts) I ADORE THEM TOGETHER. HE PROTECTED HER FROM THE ENEMIES AND SHE SAVED HIM FROM HIMSELF
I think it is because there is a romance game for this too, an otome game where you can romance all the guys. Edit: woops... just saw it was 3 years ago this was posted XD sorry
Yeah, rarely I can find anime which make me feel like that one does. I wish they make more anime similar to Hakouki then sweet-candy-absolutely-no-point animes 😭
To the people who say that Chizuru is a dumb useless protagonist, stop saying that. It's not her fault if she couldn't fight, there is many reasons. She is a pure blood oni but it doesn't mean that she can fight and want to kill people. She's also not strong as her enemies. In that period, most of the women couldn't fight. In the anime, they made her different. In the game, we can see that she's really thoughtful. She is very brave and kind. She wants to protect people, such a sweet girl. I really like her. You can dislike Chizuru but not being misogyneous / mean to her.
If this was a 100% historical anime then I would agree. But seeing as their is a supernatural element and she's a powerful demon the creators should've had her at least pick up her sword and attempt to fight. She was made into a complete damsel in distress in the anime. I'm not sure about the movie.

the animators left it up to the audience to decide what they want out of the ending, they could say he's dead or that he was just injured since he didn't turned to dust (when a Rasetsu dies they turn to dust right!). I hope that brought your hopes up a bit atleast that's what I want to believe lols IM CRYING! I just finished it like a minute ago.

I cried a lot. I couldn't watch another anime for a few weeks cuz this scarred me. I love this anime so much. But now that I rewatched. Gintama I will never see this anime the same anymore. I didn't realise the connection between sougo okita,hiji and kondo shinsengumi of gintama to hakuouki's till a few days ago. Now I see the guy with tuberculosis as a sadist and hijikata stern proud. leader as a victim of okita's sadism and a complete mayo fanatic mayo while yes kondo is a good heartwarming leader yet also a stalker 😭

To this anime there is a series and movies. But the movies is just a mixed version of the series. Also the AMV shown is the movies.

Sorry to say, but Hijikata was a real person (as well as others in Shinsengumi) and was shot to death at the age of 34.
