I really like that design! His playing style really fits the tone of that bass. Cool to see it made for him and just fit so well. Well done both of you!
RIght. A lot of the instruments I make I can't really demo properly as they're just "not for me." Since Nate is local I was happy to get him down to make a video. Here's to growing the business more locally and doing more videos like this!
Thanks so much for making nate this sweet bass! He played it the other night at practice and it rips!! Can’t wait for him to use it in action next week on tour
I love seeing his passion, how he started and what drove him. He’s an amazing player and I’m glad you could provide beautiful instrument for the craft. You have major talent and I love your videos:)
Agreed, like while another bassist might be able to play the bass with similar proficiency and make it sound good... It's more like this bass was completely made for Nate - complete match. Well done Tim!
That was awesome, having him come pick up the bass, play it, and do the interview style chat. Nate seems like a really chill bloke. Loved it, mate, good job Tim.👍🏾
Nice bass. Nice playing. He's just getting started and he's already above 90% of people who play bass skills wise. That bass is going to help him excel his style to maxxxxxx!
"I've been playing bass since 2016" legit made me angry, but like in that 'impressed by/envious of a fellow musician' kind of way. I've been playing bass since 2005 and I'm absolutely nowhere near this good, though my focus shifted to guitar pretty early on, and I'd like to think I'm decent at that.
I agree completely....but then I think back on how much I neglected to practice or push myself. At the same time, some people are just naturally talented and its so frustrating when you work your butt off and it takes them no effort.
Tim and Nate, this is one of the most rewarding videos I have ever seen. It demonstrates brilliantly how two people of obviously different backgrounds can collaborate, cooperate, and make magic happen even in the toxic 2020s. Everything about it is beautiful, and I'm blinking away tears of joy. Thank you both, and I fervently hope there will be updates from time to time.
Enjoyed the build video hugely , but this one is a privilege . Thank you . And well done to Nate for actually uttering the word ‘Prog’ ! I salute you , sir !
@@timsway - Not when there are (ourselves and) Nate Porters in the world ! And that bass seems like the only sound it won’t make … …is an upright bass sound ! And it’s a funny old world where “sustainable“ and “eco-friendly “ are more PR than an actual modus operandi to be able to stay in business ! I am , however , wondering how good this wood sounds as a drum(set) ! But that’s a discussion for another day ! Again , thanks for introducing us to Nate , designing and building that bass , and making us wait until we can hear it !! Be well and safe
@@korolev-musictodriveby6583 interestingly, the Apeiron model this is based off of is a 4 string fretless that's very upright bassy sounding. It's designed to be a "bridge" between fretless bass and upright. This, however, is a totally different machine.
@@timsway - Yes , I really enjoyed the V3 video ; I meant feel rather than sound . I’m sure Mr. Porter will come to realise there are some things you can only do on a New Perspectives aluminium upright bass ! That video was an eye-opener , too . Odd that all that classic jazz and bop was played on plywood basses , and that if they’d used ‘quality’ woods , they wouldn’t have sounded anywhere near as good . Love your work , admire your ethos , Mr. Sway ; have a great Sunday
Oh man!!! That bass is gorgeous!!! I want one! What a lucky musician for getting to own that beauty. Congratulations to him and congratulations to u too Tim for making such an amazing instrument.
Such a cool conversation and great way to show the instrument as it was intended. Nate seems like a great guy. I love his attitude and his melodic playing is beautiful. Bonus points for being a Primus fan. 😁 I need to go check out his music now. So glad you got to work with him to put this instrument in his hands. Thanks for sharing!
Oh Wow! I met Nate when he came to Philly this past July with his band Night crew, TH-cam recommending this video was a pleasant surprised. Genuinely a cool guy and I should've kept in touch with him and his crew.
That's a really cool bass and Nate is really good! 5 seems to be the magic number. I feel there is a lot more maturity in my playing after 31 years, but I can't get over how much growth I saw in my playing during the first 5 years. Also, love what you said about the gig comparison. I can totally relate to that.
This guy is going to go places if he keeps at it. Reminds me of Tosin Abasi. I hung with the band he was in at the time called PSI out of Wheaton, MD. He told me at the time he would practice for 8 hours a day! Fast forward years later I was working at the 9:30 Club and Animals As Leaders came through. He didn't really remember me, but we had a nice conversation.
8 hrs a day is what it takes to get good. Mix that with a little "right place at the right time" and never leaving anyone with something bad to say about you and...
This dude is living that musical life that leads to a tremendous quality of life! What a fun talented musician. Looking forward to checking out his projects!
That is an excellent design for a bass! Nate is a phenomenal player, too! Personally, I think he sounds closer to Marcus Miller than Les Claypool, but that's what I'm hearing. Also, I'm digging the banjo-like overtones on this, you should turn Victor Wooten on to this!
Inspiration and culture is both personal and family-based. While Claypool had a big impact on him personally, it's possible (though I don't want to make prejudiced assumptions) his family already had a substrate of funk and soul culture.
Great work on that Bass Tim! Nate was obviously very impressed with his new Bass. He is also one bad ass Bass player! Best of luck to him on his musical journey. 👍👍😉😉
That bass is such a beautiful gift it so suits this talented upcoming artist Nate is awesome can you imagine him ten years from now I hope I'm here to witness his talent and artistry. What a genuinely nice humble person too. I like his zen style. Some of us bassist are just plain God struck. With righteous bass playing hands 😎
I have a fanned fret 6-string bass that I absolutely love but I definitely wish the frets weren’t fanned at the top because it makes a lot of chords really difficult or straight up not doable way up high.
I've seen boutique stringed-instruments with similarly weird designs, but for some reason, perhaps because it's just different in the right spots, this one looks very aesthetically pleasing.
That is a 😎 cool bass I understand the concept I would call it the (shadow bass)you put a big 😃 smile on his face he lite up. You did a good job keep up the good work.Thank you!
Damn Nate is a killer player. I’m damn sure he could make a broomstick sound good, but that bass certainly does help. I’ve been looking for someone who might be able to build a short scale with a B extension on the low E and a whammy, after seeing this I might have to get you to make me one.
Good call making a bass for Nate. He's unbelievably talented and is definitely going to be big.
Nate’s massive grin when he first saw the bass was wonderful, and he comes across as such a cool guy. Cheers Tim.
He's a good dude.
I really like that design!

Thanks so much for making nate this sweet bass! He played it the other night at practice and it rips!! Can’t wait for him to use it in action next week on tour
I can't wait to hear it in action either!
It's interesting how the lower frets are multi scale but then it straightens out at the higher notes. Seems very practical. Really nice looking bass!
I didn't even realize this is multiscale until I saw your comment. It's a subtle one.
Killer bass, Nate is a fantastic bass player! Those 5 years were well educated. Keep killing it brother!

That bass has such a smooth sound... and the arm gives it such a special addition as well. Very nice and he looks very happy with it.
Agreed, like while another bassist might be able to play the bass with similar proficiency and make it sound good... It's more like this bass was completely made for Nate - complete match. Well done Tim!
awesome!!! thanks for the shout out!
This new generation of bass players is killing it! Gives me hope for the future.
Always good of you to let the person that you built the instrument for do a demo for the bass gets the feel of what it's going to tour playing

I met him at an art and music show over the summer where everyone had nothing but nice things to say about Nate and his band.
Awesome to see Nate on here! Fantastic build, Tim.
great looking bass, great sounding in Nate’s hands! And what a fantastic interview and video. like two old friends hanging out
