Nothing wrong with an inexpensive filling and healthy dinner. People will always complain, but full bellies and healthy kids are what matter in the end!

I love this! Growing up I spent a lot of time at my grandparents house and beans and cornbread was a regular dinner for us. When we had family dinner with all the aunt's, uncle's and cousins we still had a big ol' pot of pinto beans and a skillet of cornbread. That meal brings back so many memories.

It's so nice to see kids playing outside exploring nature instead of playing on cell phones or a television! I'm 22 and I feel like I grew up on the edge of the digital transition. Whenever I babysit my boyfriend's 10&11yo siblings, they only want to play video games or watch tv and it drives me crazy!

I agree. I love watching her kids play. I've never seen them act mean mean to each other. The older kids look after the younger ones. They remind me of the kids from the Waltons!

Natalie Renee I realise I'm writing this a year on, but I totally agree it's wonderful seeing kids play outside! I'm very lucky my grandson is hard to keep inside rain or shine he wants to be outside playing. I know that many of the kids I know his age (he's 5) are already obsessed with all things digital and are only outside maybe once or twice a month. They are missing out on so much by being kept indoors and babysat by their tvs and tablets

Yup.. whats even sadder is seeing a three year old on an ipad instead of exploring the world. Im so grateful i grew up in the 80s and 90s!! Although on the other hand they need these skills to do everything these days and thats going to only get more and more complexed and more widely used in everyday life.. so you cant win there. And with all their peers spending all their spare time on gaming you are pressured into letting them do it too. I remember my 12 year old son (4 years ago) begging me for gta 5!!

Jamerill, you are the bomb girl. I just threw frozen fries into the oven and getting ready to put hot dogs in a skillet so my kids can eat tonight. So many have nothing at all to eat, I am thankful we have plenty! My moma makes the best soup beans ever and she always uses beef bouillon cubes, I also love onion in ours. I have struggled lately with supper, so my bag of beans are now on the counter so I can soak them for tomorrow! My kids LOVE LOVE butter in theirs. I love your videos, I always feel like I get to hang with a cool mom friend when I watch. Please don't ever change.

Jamerrill....to me, it is so sad that you would even need to talk about a "disclaimer" regarding the food choices you make. I just appreciate that you share a little of your lives with others. Your recipes and your attitudes truly help me. If there is something in one of your videos that won't work for me and my family.....well, that's just part of life because we are different...and I would never dream of commenting something negative. Again, thank you for all that you share! My mom is from the South and I grew up on beans/rice and cornbread...and my mom ate raw onion with almost everything!

Love this video! Growing up we always put ham hock or bacon fat in our beans which is totally unhealthy, however we never had sugar in our cornbread. I remember in high school having sweet cornbread for the first time and it was soooo different. I can definitely see how those who grew up with sweet cornbread may not like it without sugar, but I personally prefer it without. I have always wanted to try bread machines so I love when you bring them out and show us!

I just got a bread machine, NEVER used still in the box for 1.50 at a thrift store! I tried your banana bread and put in a cup to much flour, (Perhaps because I was working in 3 recipes at one time), going to try it again today. I feel like my life has been empty without this baby! I am a food blogger and there is NO shame in letting a machine do the work, no how, no way! I understand the justifying your food preferences, I used to deal with it often, 5 years later, I no longer defend it. I agree, you do you, and I will do me and Harry can do Harry and so on and so forth! Love your videos Jammerril, been watching a long time! Your positivity and encouragement and downright "real" life, make my heart happy!

Usually, when we are eating beans and rice for a complete meal, it's usually on my wash day"Monday" and its always my family recipe of Cajun red beans and rice! Your idea for cornbread is great!! I gotta try that sometimes, maybe this weekend??? Great channel!!

People are foolish. You cook as you see fit. I have watched enough your videos to know that your family eats nutritiously. A block of processed cheese? So the heck what. Bullion? big deal, lots of people use it ... and for the size of the pot, the amount you put into is sufficient and not excessive.
Seriously, the arm-char chefs need to stop.
You budget well and feed your family properly.

As a kid we loved adding a good squirt of ketchup to our bowl of beans. 😋
Since I got my instant pot, I’ve discovered “ham stock”. I stick a couple of ham hocks in the IP, fill it with water, pressure cook for a couple of hours, then pick all the meat and freeze it with the stock for future pots of beans.
Also, a bay leaf is a great addition while cooking the beans. =)

Just a tip if you pre wash your rice you can add just under the double amount of liquid because it absorbs some of it. Another tip is you could make a rice pilaf instead of cooking it ahead. It takes about 45 minutes and it would be ready just before your beans are done :) can't wait for another cooking video x

Love watching your videos, even though we had COMPLETELY different lifestyles. But that’s the best part of TH-cam, isn’t it? Getting to learn about folks that do things differently! :)
I don’t have a big brood to feed, but cooking for others is something I’ve always enjoyed. Sometimes when I watch your videos, I think to myself, ‘man, I would LOVE to go cook for her family for a week!’ Lol!
I’ve never commented before, but the beans made me think about my own parents. My mom passed away a few weeks ago. Due to her illness over the past few years, I have been preparing food - ‘homemade TV dinners - for my dad, who is 80 and hasn’t cooked anything except a crockpot full of beans since he was in the army 60 years ago.
Both of my parents were country folks who raised us on a farm in a rural town. We ate a lot of pots of beans growing up, because we all liked them. But my mom used to talk about growing up ‘poor as a church mouse’ and eating beans and taters ate many, many meals. She talked about adding seasoning meat because they couldn’t afford a big piece of ham. Also, my sister and I carry on her tradition of adding sweet pickle juice to our beans. It doesn’t taste right to me with out the pickle juice! I asked mom where that came from, she said when she was growing up, they ate so much beans and taters, they would put anything in them to make them taste just a little bit different. And since they canned pickles - mostly sweet pickles - from their garden every year, they often added the pickle juice to ‘liven up’ the beans.
Even when she could afford to add a a ham bone or even ham chunks, we still always added the pickle juice to our beans (still do!) and served them with fried potatoes, instead of rice, and sweetened cornbread!
This video brought back a lot of good memories for me! :)

I grew up eating beans and corn bread as well. my grandma always put bacon in the beans if we didn't have left over ham and we layered it with the cornbread on the bottom with the beans on top sooo good!

I never really realised why beans are so popular in large families or in low budget meals untill I checked the nutritional value, and oh my god! So much protein and fibers!
I just discovered your channel, and I am not a mom but I normally cook for my family, so it's nice to see some easy recipes.

Looks so easy and hearty. I make a similar bean, but its more of a soup. I use northern beans and add ham, tomato, onion, pepper. I cook is slow and at the end take a little of the beans and mash them up to make it creamy. I will have to make corn bread. Love your new home.

Love to watch you !! You asked us to share. I love to make Great Northern Beans--made similar to pinto beans. We like ham in ours. Then I add onions, carrots and toward the end- diced potatoes. The leftovers can have some chopped chicken and some chili spices and some additional broth--you have white bean chili. I am lazy--I use Jiffy cornbread mix--but add oil, egg, a bit of sugar and a small can of diced green chilies.

I'm from New Orleans so beans and rice on Mondays is a tradition. Your recipe looks tasty. We always add lots of celery, onion and bell pepper at the start, it really adds to the flavor. And of course andouille sausage. TFS

Crumble the cornbread on top of the beans and rice then top it with green onions then squirt mustard on top. Mmmmmmmmmm, that's how my mom made it for us 40 years ago. Sounds weird but it's delish.

Hi great video. I just wanted to say I never thought to put beef bouillon in the beans. I will definitely try that. we use salt pork or the bone of the ham we had from Christmas taken out from the freezer that we cook with. I was also taught to take the "gas" out of the beans right before you take them off the stove get a small pan put a teaspoon of oil and a tablespoon of flour and fry up the flour per say and then add that to the beans. That is just a New Mexico tradition that has been handed down for years. However your whole meal plan was fabulous, nutritous, and inexpensive. You made me want to go hunting for a bread maker!!

I cook beans often. I live in KY and am just a country cook at heart. We love Pinto or brown beans as we call them but my favorite bean is Navy bean soup. I cook navy beans with chopped carrot, celery, onion, and a can of tomato sauce. I season with Salt and Dried Red Pepper flakes and either a ham hock or a few slices of bacon. When the beans are almost done I dice a couple of potatoes and cook just until the potato is done. It makes a delicious bowl of soup served with the cornbread. I often get asked by several friends if I will make them some. We were only fortunate to have one daughter who is 25 and out on her own but I came from a family of 6 so I still cook and either have planned leftovers or I share with family and friends. Awe eat chopped onions in our beans too. And hot sauce. With pinto or brown beans I like to add salsa and grated cheddar cheese for a change of pace sometimes.

I always pick through my pintos before rinsing/soaking/cooking because I have found small rocks in the beans. I do love cooking them in the crockpot after overnight soaking. I add olive oil, carrot, celery, and onion to the beans when I start them in the crockpot and then have fresh chopped onions and sliced pickled banana peppers at the table. Then even my vegan child can eat them. Besides, they are yummy! Love your videos! Thanks for doing all the work to make them and get them online. :)

I love how you remind everyone that it's okay to not be the "magazine mom" that being the best mom you can he makes you a fantastic mom and wife. So many young women nowadays in my generation either fall very short of the wife and mom role of they try so hard that they lose the joy of our natural born role as women. I love how you keep it simple and put together but remind us all that it isn't easy and some times life makes ya just roll with it!!

I fry onion, garlic, tomato and some kind of meat.. chorizo, pork, bacon, even hotdog pieces. After it's sautéed a little fill with water and some cilantro let it cook and it's so good.
Also for simple dinner just cook beans with some whole garlic, half onion and some olive oil and serve with chopped onion, fresh chopped tomatoes, and green chili, fresh cheese.

New subscriber here, really enjoying your videos. I will say, we are a big beans and corn bread family as well. I often find small stones in the beans so sorting them beforehand is a good idea. Love the idea of making the corn bread in the bread make, a time saver for sure!
