Got to see Ken speak a couple weekends ago. The dude stood there and shook the hands and signed autographs for people from a line all the way to the door for 3x that weekend. Every single person. A good dude. After seeing this fight i am reminded and amazed at how great of a fighter he was on the ground. Dang! My son hasnt stopped talking about shaking kens hand from that event and has been watching his fights on TH-cam almost every day. Ha ha! Thanks Ken for being a good dude!

He didn't need to throw a single punch.
They said that because they'd been told to make the rules "no punches to the head" so you could only do open palm strikes "technically" but before the fights they would say "we're not gonna penalize you if you throw punches." It was just a thing they agreed to do so they could stay legal and on the air

I came back to look at this video, and started thinking of how everyone had their own distinct style, like comic book heroes and villains. Royce Gracie was the skinny grappler, Ken Shamrock was the hollywood star, Pat Smith was the kickboxer, Gerard Gordeau was the dirty fighter, Kimo was the religious nut, Tank Abbott was the walking boulder, Dan Severn was the wrestler and so on.
I know that today's UFC fighters are better in every conceivable way, but it looks like they all fight the same. I miss those original days.

I REALLY miss these days...I was a young guy...29 years old in 1996...at my own physical prime...and would hang out with my gym buddies to watch these old UFC matches...now I'm 51...😕...enjoy your youth my friends...it is so brief...
Trying man...lol...but I just don't have the recovery that I had 20 yrs ago...and...not sure I'll ever see the numbers I had on the Bench Press back in the 90's...yet my Curls and Overhead Press are nearly as strong as they were back then...and my legs are better than ever...it makes me wonder if certain muscles in the body degrade faster than others with age...😕
@@galaxyman2007dtl I hear you man. Recovery time is the big difference, and explosion. Strength is the last to go. Bench press is overrated anyway and may do more harm than good. Years of training it with imperfect form degrades the shoulder joints and tendons. Could be why your bench lifts aren't what they used to be. Dumbell presses and pushups are just as good.
@tokr72 I think you're right...looking back...I never worked my back much...as far as pulling movements...like rows and pull-downs...and I think it's why my shoulders have imbalances now. I trained fairly safely...but I remember bouncing a little...and bridging a lot...yup...I should have been smarter. I should have done more martial arts...maybe jujitsu and boxing. Karate classes back then were too cult-like...all that...'Yes, Sensei!' The push-ups for punishment if you arrived late...too much bullshit. Today it's a lot different. The training facilities for MMA are devoid of that culty...military-like atmosphere...which is a good thing.

Ken went from MMA to WWE because of injuries and MMA being at a standstill for a while. Wrestling was full time, MMA was not. Financially better for him. While they did under appreciate him, you gotta keep in mind that NOW Ken is an legend but at that time, he was not as big of a household name as he is now.. and he only wrestled about a year or 2 in WWE and had some time gaps inbetween due to injuries and he got sent down for more training because he had injured several wrestlers.
All these years later, leg locks are becoming the premiere submission for a lot of guys. It’s crazy how some of the most ancient techniques circle back around.

I just met Ken Shamrock on Sunday 30/6/19 in Sydney.What an awesome guy,he's a legend.
Is it just me or was the production of UFC in the 90s just epic? They showed the different styles of the fighters and the feel was just so special with the super fights where the winner got a belt as trophy 🏆 even tho they couldn’t defend them haha.

I was 21 in 1996 and trust me these things were epic! Every UFC was a huge event because they went months before having another one. They were on Friday night. I remember me and my friends going to Little Caesar's to get a pizza for each of us watching this madness lol
@Dnomyar Akunawik Ken Shamrock practiced that leg lock probably 1000 times for every time a well-rounded grappler now practice it once. The things he did he would be far better at than some guy who has a bit of everything.

Dan Severn was one of the few early UFC fighters who never touched PEDs/steroids.
This was one of the fights that got me into watching MMA. That heel hook was masterful.

Dan Severn harping “position, position, position”…. That’s the world class wrestler in him speaking. All his training and experience: “dominant position means your back is not on the mat.” The BJJ/Submission guys emphasized the finish. Whether that finish came from on top or the bottom did not matter to them. Great example of this was when his “brother” Frank took on GM Winner Kevin Jackson. Everyone told Frank “You are crazy that Man is going to get a single/double, put you down, and grind you to a pulp. Well Mr. Jackson…. let me introduce you to an arm bar from the transition to the guard.

Between this, the win over Severn, and draws with Gracie and Taktarov (both fights he very likely would have won a decision), this was Shamrock's apex. He was the best fighter in the world at this point, and you could see a complete fighter in him, the model for what others would form into "complete" MMA fighters.

I don't think Shamrock ever got to feel like he could let his guard down to the critics. He dwelled so much on the opinions of the one or two people left that doubted him, that I'm guessing he never really stopped to recognize just how great he was. Him and Royce Gracie were simply the best 2 fighters of the early ufc years.

I'm reading Shamrock's book, right now, and he actually became much more technical after losing against Royce Gracie early in his career. He was determined to learn more ground techniques and it shows here.
ken was the man before all the injuries. he went to wwe and it destroyed his knees and his back. when he made his return to the ufc against tito he was a shell of himself. knees and back were fucked, which prevented him from grappling like this. so he resorted to stand up which he wasnt very good at.
He was awesome, he fought in Pancrase in Japan. Heel hooks and kneebars...there were few better than him during that time.

I think he has been screwed back together and super glued now after so many injuries but he was a beast at his best.

Shamrock really learned his lesson from his fights with Gracie. That’s BJJ what we see here.
He was already an experienced grappler, and he learned he should double down on that.

Grew up with Ken in Northern California... he really is the nicest guy in the world. Wish he was a spring chicken and still fighting, I miss that a lot.
Well he is 55 years old now but still looks pretty much the same. Guy's an animal!
Nevada Dan wow! was he a brawler when he was young or none ad a fighter as a kid.
Two stories:
1. I officiated men’s slow pitch tournaments when I was in college. Both teams started arguing from the dugouts. Ken came out and wanted to fight the ENTIRE TEAM by himself, they all declined.
2. Had a super small bachelor part in Reno. Three brothers, Ken and I. He got into a fight that night with 2 football players. One was with the Seattle Seahawks and the other was with the University of Oregon. Knocked both of their asses out in an alley
Nevada Dan great story Dan cool as hell and I thought I was a tuff guy.
His last name is Nance. Ken was troubled as a youth. He was in a boys home for several years and was adopted by Bob Shamrock, the owner of a boys home. Ken broke his neck in HS and was in a halo for several months. As soon as it came off, he was a fighting and wrestling animal once again!!!

I was privileged to speak to Bob shamrock thru back belt magazine for a original lions den shirt.
You could see the evolution of the sport with every event. This is one event showcasing how much it had already evolved. Lots of these elements still exist. Props to the OG fighters.
At 9:03 Ken shifted his hips with perfect timing as Kimo was punching and made Kimo miss while getting at a good angle and the right time for the knee bar, very advanced leg lock back then, very nice I'm gonna try this when I spar on bottom open guard.
That timing was impeccable, Ken’s fight IQ really shines here. Kimo didn’t have much technique but he was a real threat and dismantled Royce.
Kimo was Tough as hell! Check out his fight against Bam Bam Bigolow in Japan.
Bigolow was untrained, I think his fight against Black Belt Royce was more impressive
And he still got beat by Royce Gracie who weighed like nearly 50 lb less

@@alcopower5710 you are right. Kimo was giving them a crazy battle with pure brute power. Till this day I still believed Kimo could have been a ufc legend sitting in the hall of fame. If Kimo had real training I think history would be rewritten as Kimo era and not Gracie or Ken. You gotta remember Gracie almost lost had it not been for his PonyTail grab or Geeeeee. There really is something about these older matches. Everything is saw raw. I never saw any of these live, but I was lucky that the video store down the road always had the newest releases on VHS. My brother and I were really into it.

So awesome....loved the look and feel of these old school UFC videos. Felt very underground. Now it's just WWE with real punches.
I loved the early UFC days. I know they were first really geared to showing how great Gracie Jiu Jitsu was and it worked, but it was also awesome how it showed different styles and techniques.
I was at that UFC8 event in Puerto Rico in 1996. It was a sold-out crowd and the event itself was historic for several reasons:
1) 1st time using rounds
2) Don Frye's 8 second KO was a record that lasted for more than a decade as fastest KO ever.
3) It was Bruce Buffer's debut (during an alternate fight.
4) UFC was taken to Federal court the SAME DAY of the card, the UFC's injunction prevailed and tickets were sold in 3 hours.
Which begs the questions: When is UFC coming back to Puerto Rico???
Besides, we have several UFC fighters of Puerto Rican bloodlines that could attract fans today, such as Anthony Pettis, Tecia Torres, Shane Burgos, Jimmie Rivera, Rob Font, Lyman Good and Sergio Pettis, to name a few. That's not even mentioning Cubans Yoel Romero and Jorge Masvidal and Dominican Alex Garcia.
Loving all these early UFC fights they have been uploading. Keep them coming.
