partition of Germany & of Berlin was into ⅓s U.S. + British ⅓ each were combined to make the West -- then France was given some by U.S. + Britain DeGaulle gave back the French part of West Germany, but held on to their part of West Berlin to the end (I had a dinner in the French Officers Club in Berlin, summer 1989.)
