🏛️ The Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile, often referred to as the Arc de Triomphe, is one of the most famous landmarks in Paris, France. It stands at the western end of the Champs-Élysées, one of the city's major avenues.
The Arc de Triomphe was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806 to honor the French army's victories. Its construction was completed in 1836, long after Napoleon's reign, and it now serves as a monument to all soldiers who fought and died for France.
Designed by Jean Chalgrin, the Arc de Triomphe is a massive triumphal arch made of stone. It stands at a height of 50 meters (164 feet), with a width of 45 meters (148 feet) and a depth of 22 meters (72 feet). The arch is adorned with intricate sculptural details depicting military victories and other historical events.
The Arc de Triomphe is also home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, added in 1920. It serves as a memorial for unidentified soldiers who lost their lives during World War I. The eternal flame at the tomb is rekindled every evening.
Visitors can climb to the top of the Arc de Triomphe to enjoy breathtaking views of Paris. The observation deck offers panoramic vistas of famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, and the Seine River.
The Arc de Triomphe is located in a large roundabout known as Place Charles de Gaulle, previously called Place de l'Étoile. It is a hub of traffic and serves as a junction for twelve major avenues, including the famous Champs-Élysées.
