And yeah, Cameron, I feel the same way, I think it's the actual best song included on the S2 Works release of the OST, making it extra poignant Anno chose to not include it. Perhaps he had qualms about the translation after all, but I like to think it's all just a big troll.
Asuka and Shinji relationship is a very odd one, they are in love with each other, but they are too afraid to try because they have been rejected so many times they fear being rejected again.
I think that's why so many people, myself included, feels so strongly about their relationship. It's so much more complex and faceted than the majority of fictional characters, let alone two 14 year-olds in a mech anime.

I don't think that lyric is saying that they didn't have feelings for each other, I think it was more talking about how Shinji and Asuka had kissed, not out of their feelings for each other, but just because Asuka was bored and pressured him into doing it. The lyric right after is "It wasn't you at all" When Asuka and Shinji kissed, Shinji was clearly not doing it out of his feelings and it shows by how unpassionate he comes across during the kiss. As such it wasn't a true kiss
Is a wise selection of images that describe their relationship. Both characters, specially Asuka, represent many of my flaws and for that I always wished that both found happiness. Their ending in RoE was sour and sweet for me, because both finally found a reaason for love and enjoy the world but not together...unless both befriend destiny.

Asuka resented Shinji because he was a weak willed man who wouldn't stand up for himself but she also was attracted to him for his skills as a pilot which made her feel inadequate that someone like him outclassed her circling back into resentment. Shinji lived a life deprived of love and Asuka infuriated him for showing signs of romantic interest while also berating him and attacking his person on a constant basis which only hurt him more from the hope of having something he believed he could never have. You could argue they acted as a couple would in many ways, but they only brought out feelings of inadequacy and pain from one another.

Im bad at explaining but i'll try. When people feel disappointed by love they keep asking themselves "What is love?". When hope in love is lost, there comes feelings like a person isn't
capable of love, a question that keeps repeating itself ("what is love") until a new person comes. When a new person ltrl stumbles in our life and shows us what love could be or how it should be, then there comes "til it comes home to you". Hope i explained it
