    I want to add my thanks for your lovely video. I really appreciate your soft, stress-free voice and your patient, unhurried demonstration. I'm currently watching and knitting/purling along with you daily as my hands and muscle memory learn another, gentler way to knit. Thank you.

    This is how I’ve been knitting and didn’t know it was a thing. Years ago I discovered I was purling the “wrong” way and then I simply learned to adjust my knit stitches so as not to twist them. Also found out who to work out SSK and K2tog. Good to know there’s a bunch of us 😊

    Leading and trailing helped alot instead of front and back. I literally just picked up some needles last night to try knitting (I crochet) and I automatically went into eastern/Russian knitting without knowing what I was doing. It took me ages to figure out what I was doing "wrong" compared to every video I've seen on TH-cam. Thank you for the tips

    Firstly,good morning from Suffolk,U.K! This is a craft i keep meaning to teach myself having been a crochet girl my whole life. I had heard 'combination' knitting was the way too go. Having watched several other videos,yours has me the most keen to start my project and confident i can do it without getting cramp in my hands or bored before i get to the end of it! So i just wanted to say thank-you for taking the time to share the way you knit with me i learnt a lot from just that short but clear and easy to follow video you both made. I liked the fact,as your husband says,its the lover/round,under and out part of the purl that got me confused,not anymore thanks to the slowed down,clear extra stitches you demonstrated to me,so,once again Hello and thank you very much!

    Thank you for your video. I do this exact same way of knitting and I was watching some other knitting instructions and found that this is also the Russian way they knit and purl. I just find it so easy to do and ergonomic as well. I like your explanation of always looking for the 'leg' of the stitch. You are so soothing to listen to and so patient as well. Your cat was adorable as well.

    That's how I used to knit and purl when I taught my self, and then I was told I was doing it wrong. so, I taught my self the other way. I guess there really isn't a wrong or right way, just whichever is more comfortable. Thank you for sharing. Thanks to the cameraman, too for his insight. He must have seen me getting real close to the screen to see what you meant by leading leg.

    Thank you so much for this video! It's made me feel so much better. You see, I learned to knit 30 years ago and i don't exactly now why I stopped all of a sudden after a couple of years. 3 years ago I started to crochet. Self taught and with the help of TH-camrs. I decided to pick up knitting again about a month ago and have already been told I'm doing it wrong by a handful of young ladies who have seen me knit in public. So how come my projects come out exactly like the pattern, i asked. They just shrugged :)

    I see you added one of my videos. Thank you. I like your videos too.
    Though I still use Flicking when I have a time where that style is more efficient, but generally for everything, I use Combined now. And I Flick if my hands get tired but they almost never get tired doing Combined.
    It has made a big difference in how Arthritis is in my hands effects me. My hands did show large knuckles, a visible sign of the inflammation of Arthritis. My doctor asked to see my hands about 3 months ago, as he knows I am an avid knitter, he could no longer see inflammation. There is no more swelling. He had noted the enlarged joints and was impressed there is not inflammation in my hands any longer. Several years ago, my hands were so bad, I could hardly open a round door knob, as the pain destroyed my grip -- just forget about opening jars. My dear husband changed out all the doorknobs in the house except the one into our garage, with lever style. Now I can open the round handles well again. But I do like the lever style knobs. I have a jar opener can opener combo which still opens the jars which are most stubborn but it no longer hurts to open jars either.
    As I was raised in doing the English stitch, it was an adjustment to see knitting through the heart of the stitch as being the way to get things done. But it really is. I have knit everything this way: cables, lace, fair isle and it works. Despite my pig-headedness, it is a big improvement to me to knit Combined.
    An advantage I really see is that after switching to Continental Western, my purl rows were looser and I like to knit on circulars as I bought a lot of them. It made switching to a smaller needle irksome to make my purl rows the same tension as I got rowing. No rowing with Combination. It just looks better, my ribbing looks better and my hands don't hurt. And I knit socks but wrap the knit stitch opposite so that I am looking at the knit stitch as I now see it should be. Seems faster to me and I enjoy it.
    There is an easier Continental purl I've seen on line, though I use it sometimes, even with that I get rowing. It is all good to know. It is really the better way to knit as one ages as our hands do a lot for us, keeping our joints working is important. Movement is important. Knitting is both mental therapy (releases endorphins -- keeps one happy) but it helps the joints. It is a pleasure to pick up a pencil now or a pen and sign my name and it looks like my signature instead of a woman 30 years older than I am.
    No matter what style of knitting one does, knitters are great people, making things for others, and yes, sometimes for ourselves. To give is indeed more blessed than to receive.

    My mom taught me to knit when I was 9 years old. I did the knit stitch the same way as you do. The purl stitch was done different. I use to drop my yarn each stitch. Then I realized my mom taught me to knit left hand and I am right. I taught my self to knit right hand and hold the yarn in my left. I tried holding the yarn in my right hand and I can not get the right tension. I use my left hand. Very helpfull

    I've just picked up knitting again after years of not knitting. I decided I needed something that was easier on my old messed up shoulders. I have been practicing the continental style. I like it very much, except the purl stitch requires too much hand turning for me. What you do is perfect, except it's completely backwards from what I've been practicing. I'll have to look to see how you cast on, etc. It all has to work. I can't stop all the time to change the stitches. Lots to learn.

    Thanks for this wonderful video! I got here by accident trying to figure out which leg is the 'right' leg... but since I knit continental and sometimes knit the way you show, but thought I was knitting into the back side, and only wanted to do that while ribbing.. sometimes etc. It's nice to know it's fine to do. Also explains why it feels flatter and softer this way too! Thanks again. :D

    I just sighed a release breath. I am teaching myself to contintel knit because I want to be able to do stitches like linern, seed, rubbings and such with less movemovement. I am unable to keep my tension with purling. I've got knitting down. Im doing decreases. king through frobt asnd back loop but haven't tried increases yet. 🤞 I realize as I write this. But the way you purl just may be my answer to purling. Rather than pushing down on my yarn with my fingers (where I lose tension and the yatn off my index finger EVERY PURL. I've gotta try this. NOT moving my yarn. If I just hold it the right hand can do the work and push down the yarn way less. I imagine that also helps with tension issues created in the extra yarn slack in stitches between purl back to knits. Those stitches for many people are often looser if they don't adjust their tension while knitting each stitch in most knitters fabric happens that is on a purl stitch from pushing so much yarn down to make the stitch. If the slack isn't pulled back each time that stitch is made in your fabric it will be looser from the tension in other stitches typically being looser. which is caused by pushing the yarn down in continental and in English the extra yarn it takes just pulling yarn between the needles between knit and purls. So what you just taught us must greatly reduce it in continental knitting to with this method of purling you probably don't even need any adjusting of your tension there. BRILLIANT! As well as helping the knitters body health allowing for longer knitting sessions with less repetitive stress injuries. Barely any wrist and neck stress. Seriously, Thank you so very much.

    • @bunelladunella
      @bunelladunella  10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Garter stitch is the same way as always, knit every row. "Always knit through the leading leg." That is our mantra. Unless, of course, you wish to intentionally twist a stitch; in that case you knit or purl through the trailing leg. So easy.

    I can see how this is much more ergonomic than regular continental or norwegian knitting, but have you not noticed the distinct zig-zagging your stitch columns do, right up your work?
    I knit right handed, usually referred to by americans as "english" knitting although far different from how any american knits, and I get perfectly even rows and column tension, with ergonomy at least as good as this.

    I hv a question I knit like that with straight it works, but when I want to do a 1 k, 1 p rib on circular needles for knitting in rounds for a hat it won't work and I am obliged to knit the purl like the western continental style that is wrap the yarn over that is clockwise which I am not used to it and knit the knit stitch also from the front loop. How can I knit in rounds the combination that is k thru back loop and purl thru front loop, in knitting round the front loop for the purl st. goes to the back unless wrapping the yarn for p st. clockwise.

    • @bunelladunella
      @bunelladunella  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Remember, always knit or purl through the LEADING LEG of the stitch. Don’t think “front” or “back” loops. The leading leg may be either in front or in back of the needle.

    Hi, Do you knit like this when you are ribbing? I'm doing that currently for a 2x2 rib scarf. I'm noticing that there are some loose and some tight stitches. I feel that my tension is ok and that maybe I'm not holding the yarn and needles correctly. I've watched your video many times and thought I was doing it like you for the most part :) If you do combination knitting for a 2x2 rib would you be able to make a video to show that? Or, could you offer any tips or let me know if you notice what I'm talking about on your work? Thanks so much. I want to knit like you because it seems to bring you peace :)

      Annette Ross Hi. I had a similar issue. At a local yarn shop, one of the very helpful workers who's a wonderful local knitting teacher, suggested that as I was learning the new technique I just practice -- without an eye toward a finished product. She suggested that I just do the knit stitch until the stitches were even... same with purling... then add them together -- still all just practice. She said I might go through an entire skein, just practicing. Hope this helps.
