He closed the show with this song in Indy two weeks ago by himself, just one spotlight. Nobody breathed. The atmosphere on the lawn was so heavy I was overwhelmed. I've never experience a live performance like that. Ray bares his soul in ever song he sings, every word is poetry.

This song is one, where you can't help but look back through the years of your life. Which inevitably, always leads back to one person, and you wonder where they are now, and it absolutely kills you.

This song is what song writing is about. If you have a simple melody you don't need more if your lyrics are spot on like these. I love this song!

Its 2012 and you are sitting at your computer at night finishing homework from college, its your 2nd year into an engineering degree. The last girl you loved lives in the apartment on floor below you and she misses you more than you know but you sit there contemplating life listening to this song. Life seems so surreal yet monotonous, everything seems like a passing memory you get to relive. You see it starts to snow outside you window by the street light and people are parking near by for the bar across the street. You lean back in your chair while your cat curls up in your lap and you feel a sense of peace at where you are. Three years from that point, you marry that same girl, graduated and living in that same apartment she was in. The parking lot once again is filling with cars for the bar across the street, its snowing and you just got take out from the burger place next door. Life feels like its moving, like its left the bus station and you have a window seat. It worked out...the slight empty feeling is long gone now and all you wish is that life could always feel this beautiful.

    FINALLY....AT LAST..
Five or six years ago i would play this regularly to my 11 year old daughter, just totally praying that she might connect to something of pure quality. Time passed on and two days ago, she walked in through our open back door with "hi Dad..i won't be a minute..just need the toilet". Eventually, as this very song above was playing, the latch on the door opened, she headed towards the sink to wash her hands with the briefest ever conversation between us passed, which went as follows...
"You know Dad, it must be about the right time for us to go and see Ray Lamontagne "live", don't you think?"
In that very small but delicate moment, i knew i had raised my daughter properly. It felt like the perfect exchange between a father and his daughter.
She shouted through, "No response then Dad...no?".
The only reason i was silent was because i was trying to dry my eyes without her knowing, as this song played out to it's conclusion. It felt like a beautiful final film scene and the credits rolled.
    HUGE THANKS Ray.

    • @Madgeney

      You summed it up perfectly.
I saw him play in London a few years ago, and I have never witnessed such serenity and beauty in a performance. It was a beautiful and personal experience and he clearly is a troubled soul. He sang his beautiful songs and as most of us know, you can’t create material like that if you’re in a happy place.
But there was some idiot man in the crowd who kept shouting out: “talk to us ray!” and “why aren’t you saying anything?” As if he is some sort of performing seal!! It was hard to remain patient with that idiot, but at least he had the good grace to shut up during the songs. But it just goes to show how some people are too shallow to get the depth of Ray LaMontagne.
I felt like shouting back to the guy that if he wanted to be “entertained”, then he should have gone to a comedy club. But I didn’t want to lower myself to his ignorance, and hoped that he would eventually shut up. He didn’t.
Most people who go to see Ray are aware of the beauty of him and appreciate where his songs have come from.

Strange...just today my 14 year old daughter walked into our front room when i was playing this song on Ray's album and asked me what was it i loved about him. I told her being at a gig by this man must be like Ray has a "bottle of emotion", which he shakes and shakes until it's ready to burst...then he pops that cork and sprays that "emotion" all over that audience and tears of that emotion roll into their eyes and work their way into their hearts, souls and minds".....her response...
"WANNA GET TICKETS TO GO SEE HIM DAD?"........................my little girl just grew up...don't know whether to be happy or cry!!!!
WE HUGGED....beautiful moment...many thanks Ray Lamontagne..

As a songwriter myself i often sit with a talented friend who is a poet and we analyse and tear apart lyrics and music of some of the "greats" to see we can work out if there is one true special ingredient in that singer and his/her songs...a formula.
      Ray Lamontagne...
....in a nutshell we came up with a variety of things but one or two things stood out.Remember this is purely an opinion based from somebody(myself) who is prolific with the pen(which i feel Ray is).
Let's get the beard thing out of the way for all of the many folk who ridicule it..or love it. There are two things, whilst trying to focus on writing which tend to go by the wayside when you write songs(three if you count relationships)..as a man, preening in front of a mirror is the last thing on the agenda as writing "cracking" lines appears at the worst times..ALL THE TIME..
3.a.m. in the morning, with snow falling on the roads and watching drunk folk arriving home seems par for the course(mildly amusing though..especially when a song comes out of it). But mostly, words and music, as a creative, pop up at some unusual times..i.e. when the Mother-in-law pops in for a surprise visit, or right in the middle of a family film, up pops that gem of an idea(and out comes the pen(with a wife killing you with daggers in her eyes), on a hospital bed awaiting treatment for a muscle spasm or waiting for the wife and kids to go around the supermarket OR burning numerous PIZZAS due to taking eye off the ball....couple some of these with Ray's touring schedule and you realise A BEARD and the least possible amounts of haircuts in a year is a cool place to be.
Now, to the music and lyrics. As a dude whose fame arrived a little later than many, i've absolutely no doubt that Ray has already built up a stack of songs(before somebody said.."THIS DUDE'S AWESOME") and it will be more of a problem finding said songs when he needs to find them, as most will probably be written on just about anything he could find at the time..recently i penned a whole lyrical idea on the only available space on our Vauxhall Corsa service manual..my wife found it and went nuts.."HOW OUR WE GONNA SELL THE CAR NOW!!!"..her words...The Tippex bottle will find it's way there one day..although, who knows, it might put more value on the car if my latest song THE STORM by HANNAH DRURY turns a few heads..or anything by JASMINE LAMPORT...or on SONIC FOXX MUSIC(Shameless advert OVER).
Back to the whole point..WHAT IS RAY'S SECRET....after weeks of discussing it and totally rating his albums, we finally settled on a simple thing.....RAY LAMONTAGNE'S SECRET INGREDIENT IS......
RAY CHARLES LAMONTAGNE....it's him, the way he writes, the way he sings and the way he is able to carve you up emotionally inside with that amazingly emotional voice. Ray's secret IS NO SECRET...the answer is, as he says...WITHIN YOU...the listener...and when you find HIM you just want to buy, YES, BUY, every bloody song the man has penned.
ROCK ON RAY LAMONTAGNE...and to anybody who finds and loves his creations...I SALUTE YOU!!!!

...other than this..i'm SPEECHLESS....puffing my cheeks to maximum with air and gently releasing that air slowly through slightly opened lips...whooooaaaah!!!

Your voice & guitar was ALL was you. PURE, nothing more needed to be GOD SENT.
SHAME TO THOSE WHO MADE YOU CHANGE.

Are you still in love with me?--> asking her. . .
Am I still in love with her?--> asking himself. . .
Do I remember who I was before this sorrow?
Is the love just deeper over time, like the river that carves a deeper canyon with passing time.
Are we such strangers that we can't even admit to ever knowing each other?
We were 17, madly in love, and her parents found out about our lesbian love in a small back woods town. I never saw her again after the restraining order until 5 years later when she contacted me out of the blue. We met up at our usual spot, on summer break from college and all the feelings were still there. She asked if I thought she was gay. I told her I couldn't tell her that. She never contacted me again and it's been 10 years. She's married with a child still in that small town. We are strangers like rock and roll and radio. . .
