  • @karmadave

    Hi Guthrie. Thanks for another great lesson. This lesson has a heavy 'Hard To Handle' vibe. I am really studying triads so this lesson is very timely. I really struggle with my right hand. I've noticed that the cats that have their right hand together, such as yourself, sound WAY better. Do you have any suggestions on how to get better with the right hand to really get that funky rhythm sound?

    • @mmmatthewww
      @mmmatthewww 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Karmadave ... Guthrie would be the one to answer your question on this, but my two-cents worth would be that to get a good funk groove going it's really important to get both hands loose and syncopated. For me, I like my right hand to be loose and open, with the bottom three fingers hanging slightly down as in a pendulum, and a light grip on the pick, and then obviously the right hand being the metronome, but also keep that left chording hand loose and bouncy as well. Another thing that helps for me is to rotate the pick away from the point and use the softer upper radius for a smoother attack.

    • @karmadave
      @karmadave 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hey Matthew. That's really great advice. Thanks! @@mmmatthewww

    • @mmmatthewww
      @mmmatthewww 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@karmadave Hey Dave. Thanks for the reply. I really hope there is some little nugget in my comment that you can use. I am constantly impressed with Guthrie's playing. This video here was a great little lesson for something nice and simple to just develop that sense of groove. If you just work with particular piece, and try to emulate what Guthrie is doing, you're most of the way there. Something I might add, you've got to feel funky, to play funky. So really get a mental and physical mindset of being loose and funky when you're playing this stuff. Try sometimes to barely play the triad, just let in bounce into play, for a second before lifting of left hand pressure. With funky stuff, you're usually playing against a strong bass and drum groove, so the guitar is just the spice. Think of the guitar part as being like the drummer's hi-hat cymbal. Spashy and syncopated. A useful quote from James Brown ... “Now we all got our drums.” Some may be guitars, some may be keyboards, but all should be doing the same work as drums: adding to the groove. “And when you’re playing a drum,” he says, addressing issues of music theory, “it don’t matter what key you in, what bar you in, what planet you on…” All that matters is: “Does it feel good?”

    2:35 focusing on triads on groups of three strings importance. Making three note groups of triads “speak”. Only let the strings you want to speak, speak.
    3:37 - B7 chord as a consistent static pattern intertwined with fun things.
    B7 triad to B major 7 triad.
    4:20 Think about groupings of triads and how they organize the fingerboard.
    4:45 - Hand position and triads are the big takeaways.
    4:51 Sliding into the dominant 7 triad
    5:04 b,g and d strings.
    5:24 g,d and a strings for the next part. G shaped e positioning.
    5:48 the whole thing played slowly.
    5:57 first part
    6:00 second part
    6:03 third part
    6:35 whole thing in tempo.
    6:50 another thing if you’re ambitious. The A triad E triad and B7 triad.
    7:15 remember, it’s a consistent part. The consistency is important as long as it’s not boring. Create your own.
    6:03 third part
