    Why not using the engine?

    Hard to figure out what they were trying to do? His anchor appeared to be the only thing keeping him off the wall yet he was pulling the bow line in tight. Possible taking the bow line way forward up the dock might have taken pressure off the anchor and a spring line from the stern up the dock too would help take the anchor pressure off too. Then another line from the starboard side ( right side) to the dock the other way to keep boat from banging against the dock ......but I was not there so not sure what he was trying to do.
    Cheers Warren

      Yeah, a spring from the port aft fairlead as far forward on the dock as it can go and around his winch to get some tension on it would surely help. But then I guess that's easy for me to say sat here with my coffee in a nice warm room!

      couple of bow springs, plus cross springs at the stern to counter the twist, but key thing is crew need 2 points of contact and not hold the lines in their hands without securing as they have no control. But I'd not want to be the skipper dealing with that - it looks tough.

      his anchor didn't hold, when the wind grew up. So he fixed his boat in front with long bow- lines. If the lines and his bow-clamps are strong enough this could work.

    i see a guy crashed his stern in Malta like this one time...but he had no chance, 30m steelship, Valetta has a really sick L shaped harbour, easy to come under it in mistral and when a huge Passengership is leaving hte harbour at the same time you have a 50cm swell also.... this guy here...i dont know, was the engine broken? I would just have brought her out a bit more, it hurts me to see boats get hurt like this :/

    I am going to ignore lots of stuff. I assume though that at least a singular winch is functional on that poor sailboat. Those winches do multiply your force quite a bit. That’s why we place them on the boats. Given a fixed point away in the front and a line attached to it, this boat could pull away with its own means and not a bunch of people doing something ranging from hard and stupid to dangerous. Sure a bunch of uncoordinated brutes on the dock are of great help every time, but a winch might give you 32 times mechanical advantage. Next time try a bit of seamanship everybody.

    Would'n be better to use an engine to push forward to help mooring a bow?

    • @motorbiking18650
      @motorbiking18650 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, the guy coiling lines in the cockpit should have been at the helm, engine forward at least at idle or even putting a ball fender out, to keep the stern off the concrete. But to be fair to them, half the problem was the "crew" ashore. Its never a good sign when people hold the line and take the strain in their arms. He already had springs, but I guess with the chop he couldn't get them tighter.

      Her fingernails are certainly not dry yet. Or she has to finish smoking the cigarette ...! Over the years I have seen what so many women are doing in the harbor. It's unimaginable how stupid some can act. High heels, lipstick and prosecco are tools that some women are perfect at.
