Breeding Fruit Flies in an Airtight Jar With Plants

Is it possible to breed fruit flies in an airtight closed ecosystem? In this video I show you how I put some fruit flies in a jar, together with enough food to sustain the population for a while. Since this is an airtight jar, the flies need a source of oxygen, which is provided by the plants I added to the closed ecosystem as well. Is this a viable way to keep fruit flies as pets?
