    Will - Founder of Western Rise here - The shorts are made to also go swimming in. The drawstrings, the mesh flow through pockets, and the water resistance makes it where you only need to take one pair of shorts while you're traveling.

    I’m in my late 60s…retired military…and retired federal wildlife LEO. I spent two careers “outside”….and in retirement, while dealing with some health issues, I continue to push myself to stay in shape. (Let’s face it, if and when I “go”, I want it to be fast, and outside. I can think of a lot worse things than ending up as “coyote kibble”!). In retirement, I’ve adopted a minimalist lifestyle. I kept and use my Navy flight jackets, my pea coat…but a couple dress shirts, some quality (BYLT p) tee shirts, etc. I’m looking for a couple pair of pants that can “do it all”. I really enjoy your videos…and your insight. OP Shorts! Ha! I remember those…corduroy…what…maybe a 5” inseam? Anyway, Bravo-Zulu on your assessment of Western Rise. I’m giving them another look, brother…thank you!

    Those shorts are hybrid shorts. Hence the drawstring. They are designed to be able to be worn in the water like a pair of board shorts. I live in Costa Rica and while I don't have any Western Rise shorts all of my shorts are hybrid shorts. Never know when you are going to want to go in the ocean or swim in a waterfall down here. So much like the evolution pant is designed to be worn outdoors or going out to a nice restaurant those shorts are designed to be used in a similar way. Be it hiking, going out to dinner or a swim in the ocean if the opportunity presents itself.

    • @hrrrrrrr2084
      @hrrrrrrr2084 ปีที่แล้ว

      in that case do you never wear anything under your shorts since they're basically swim shorts?

    • @CarlHancock
      @CarlHancock ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hrrrrrrr2084 Always love random replies to old comments 😂. Yes, I do. They aren't quite swim shorts or in this case board shorts (which would be the closest type of swimwear you could compare them to) because they have pockets, zippers, etc. Board shorts typically try and avoid those things and use velcro and drawstrings. So they are shorts. But they are quick drying and depending on the brand the pockets even zip closed which can be important for not getting pockets full of sand in the ocean. Even if I'm wearing board shorts made for swimming and surfing I still wear performance boxer briefs underneath them because they help act as a rash guard. I'd never wear swimwear that has a mesh lining. I don't get why those even exist. The mesh just acts as a skin irritant. Especially when sand is involved.

    • @hrrrrrrr2084
      @hrrrrrrr2084 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CarlHancock really it's not that old for a comment 😂😂yeah whil I can understand a mesh lining can be very annoying, here you don't have one do it won't irritate in regular use. Also the shorts won't dry quickly if the boxers underneath are wet

    • @brekkoh

      @aayotechnology 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brekkoh to do that job right is nowhere near a $10 job. At least where I live. You’d have to deconstruct the whole leg. You shouldn’t just add a full length stitch to taper it.

    Bought some Prana Brion "slim" pants a few years ago and was disappointed a.) that they weren't as slim as I'd hoped, and b.) how quickly the fabric started to "pill" in high-wear areas (mainly the front and thighs). Think I might pick up the proven Evo 1 and see how the Evo 2 fares after people get some miles on them. I too don't wear shorts hardly at all, so need something versatile and durable. Thanks for the in-depth review.

    Yea that inside label would annoy me too. And agree on the colors; they wouldn’t be my first choice. That blue that companies use always seems odd. But I don’t I like purple either. What’s interesting to me is they dressed the evolution pant up with these changes, even though they added a dressier chino to the line. I like both from what I see but who knows after trying them on. Lastly, do you know what the water-resistant coating is on the pants? If they are going to add a coating hopefully it’s something on the environmentally-friendly side.

      @WillWatters 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey - Will the founder of Western Rise here. Ive worn the new Evolution Pants for everything from desert hiking to nice dinners and travel. It's a bit cleaner than the first version, but we did that to maximize versatility. As for the water resistant treatment (DWR), it's a C0 flourocarbon free plant based water repellant. Definitely environmentally friendly.

    • @aayotechnology
      @aayotechnology 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WillWatters thanks for the response, Will. Glad to hear about the sustainability of the product. I see your point with the versatility but be careful you don’t lose the customer like me that occasionally still likes a pair or two of more comfortable and casual pants. I wouldn’t assume all the gen1 customers will be happy switching to gen2. Notice Apple just came out with yet another SE yesterday. And it still has a home button.

    • @WillWatters
      @WillWatters 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@aayotechnology I completely get that. With the 1.0 version as well as the new version, I would say the Evolution Pant has always been our most dressed up pant. Both our AT Pant and Diversion pant offer a more casual feel due to the canvas fabric vs the twill of the Evolution fabric. Our goal is always to add versatility to our products and we felt like the design choices we made broaden that versatility.

      The short answer for that discontinuation is that women's outdoor gear is a challenge for us. Retailers typically only want to buy women's items that come in very feminine colors and patterns or pieces styled for an older demographic.
      We purposefully chose to not follow this trend. Because of this and because we sell direct and (not through retail partners) we do not have as large of a reach to a female audience.
      Although 50% of the Western Rise team is female, and we do hope to be able to offer a women's line again in the future, we are currently focusing on Menswear only at this time.

      The waist band is great. Wore the pants all day yesterday. Slightly reinforced like I show in the video, but not stiff. The 1.0 evolution didn't have much stretch in the waist at all; this 2.0 doesn't have too much stretch either, but feels more comfortable for sure.

      Thanks Chase for the reply. They advertise the stretch waist band on their Kickstarter but from the video it didn’t look that stretchy. Like you said in a prior video, I’m kinda digging pants that don’t require a belt. If you sit all day for work or travel, a stretch waist is killer.

    • @WillWatters
      @WillWatters 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lukefromowitz4514 It's not meant to be a jogger style waistband. It's a unique stretch fusible that we found. From wearing it a lot, its way more comfortable than any jeans or our 1.0 version. It makes a huge difference in comfort and we are trying to integrate it throughout the line.

    • @lukefromowitz4514

I know you can hem pants but if you like small leg openings it usually require a taper as well. I just tried the evolution 1.0 and diversion and love the nylon material you use. The length and rigid waistbands are the only killer.
