Wow! No comments yet?! What a great game!
I also play with the turret, but use the drone for my second. They work AWESOME together because what the turret can’t hit, the drone usually can! The biggest secret to the turret is that you can THROW IT ON TOP OF THINGS! Use that to your advantage as there will be less obstacles in the way! Also, as cool as the flamethrower turret is, I prefer the good old fashioned bullet turret, it goes further and seems to be more effective overall! The only real advantage to the flamethrower is that it kills faster when the enemy is close to it, otherwise I would never use it.
You are definitely getting the hang of the game, but a few tactical pointers:
    (a) don’t keep going so much out in the open, use your cover and then shoot from inside of it,
    (b) don’t waste time on semi-auto rifles like the LVOC, if your going to want to overpower you’ll need full auto; UNLESS you are wanting to snipe from cover, in which case use an actual scoped sniper rifle,
    (c) don’t forget to customize your weapons, you want good balance and accuracy as well as mag capacity, but you know that you can’t shoot what you can’t hit, so prioritize stability on your primary weapon,
    (d) the “minigun” style weapons are super fun to use, but take far longer to reload than nearly every other weapon, they also are not the most stable, if using one always keep a very accurate full auto secondary that you could immediately switch to if you run out of primary ammo DURING a firefight,
    (e) and if you run out of secondary ammo, Immediately switch to your pistol, that said make sure you keep a good one with good mods for when you need it, and finally
    (f) what’s worked best for me with maybe 80% of play in this game is using a good full auto rifle as my primary with a good scoped sniper rifle as my secondary, I ALWAYS look for and try playing from high ground to take advantage of the sniper rifle and turret, but don’t forget that you could throw that turret on top of damn near anything! Seriously! And, don’t start to engage until into position, preferably on the high ground, but also behind cover, BOTH are best though!
Please feel free to hit me up with any questions, I’m retired too and played this particular game way too much! I beat pretty much everything there is to beat along with the expansion (NY with the skyscraper), the only thing I couldn’t get into is that new AI “sim” mode that I forget what it’s called. Great playing, these tips should put you over the top, especially when going for the harder missions (namely the compound ending in DC and the end of the NY expansion; the skyscraper has a whole crazy strategy all to itself to beat the 100th floor!) I haven’t played in a while since we moved a couple of months ago and I’ve been gaming less, partly because I tinker with all things electronics and setup a pretty decent work area in the garage. I’ll gladly join in though! I’ve been wanting to get back into playing anyways since the seasons entertain me and I still have back seasons to eventually complete.
Edit: Something BIG that I somehow forgot to mention. Those small red and yellow crates that you kept walking right by have special ammo like incendiary rounds! Always grab them when you can, but make sure to put them in the weapon it’s best suited for. I will usually ensure they go into my sniper rifle first to get the most damage per shot! After that, I usually will stock my pistol to make it way more powerful as you get less damage from pistols, but when you do need it, you’ll need the most power you can! You could always stock your primary with such rounds, but I try not to waste them on regular play. Also, grab any ammo out in the wild that you come across because you generally don’t know how far away the next refill crate will be!
That said, also don’t forget that almost anything red is flammable, explosive, etc., and you could drop enemies from much further away by shooting such things in their proximity. Even fire extinguishers will explode upon impact!

Holy crap, thank you so much for this!
