The milk industry produces in excess of 840 million tons of products each year. Why do humans drink so much milk? And given that all mammals lactate, why do we favor certain types of milk over others? Jonathan J. O’Sullivan describes how milk is made.
Lesson by Jonathan J. O'Sullivan, animation by TED-Ed.
let's take a minute for all the artists who draw those images in TED's videos. They are just amazing I think.
Yến Hải đúng vậy :)
Hello
Yes
Really they are great
Me agree
I thought this was going to go into more science, specifically around breastmilk and breastfeeding.
I thought it was gonna get into why we drink milk after infancy and if we need it or not.
@@hopelltt I guess I got the mutation lol
I thought that too
They did. They said that since milk has all the nutrients a baby needs, babies can survive on milk alone during the first 6 months of life. So why would you feed a baby anything else? Considering that breastmilk is free, always the right temperature, it doesn't smell when baby poops, you have an unlimited supply of it, and its wonderful bonding time. It's kind of a no-brainer.
I was watching this as I pumped milk for my newborn. My sore nipples were hoping to hear something profound to make their sacrifice extra worth it. Guess seeing his cute little face fatten up on my supply will have to be enough motivation. ☺️
The little microbes looked so cute that I almost felt sad when their eyes turned into x's and they died
Pallavi Sanyal it's okay, thankfully they look nothing like that
yes but also, chollera
*MICROBE LIVES MATTER*
Fatema AlRomaithi Even worse than that. Just Abe Lincoln’s mother.
Why do us humans drink other animals milk?
76monikaW
cause we can
deal with it
why do human eat animals? grains? fruits? veggies? to get the sufficient nutrients of course.
I guess that's because we don't want to keep live human mothers in pens..?
JaGuaR you know our anatomy isn't design for indigestion of animals or their produce right? Hope you know that.
Because of marketing
0:08 You monster, drinking straight from the carton.
I too do that... why reach for a glass...
Ankita Nandy you abomination.
Tru
I too do that, too lazy to take a glass.
So like what's the monsterocity about it ?
I was surprised there was no mention of colostrum and the vital immunoglobulins in human milk that are specifically tailored to each human baby (absent in cow’s milk and formula). In addition, no mention of the milk ejection reflex, which is triggered by the baby and causes the milk to travel down the ducts to the baby. This is why milk doesn’t flow out all the time as it is produced.
Pretty sure the intention was for this to be a brief summary.
Yes, your comment is more the science of milk than this video that focused on commercial milk production.
for a woman preparing to lactate, I found the information about how milk is produced in glands helpful. everyone I talk to about breastfeeding are all about how to latch a newborn, but I feel knowing the science behind how my body is producing is important for making sure I eat correctly to produce nutritious milk.
also for the people asking why we drink cows milk, im sure it had something to do with a mother dieing in childbirth and the father lacking an available wet nurse. over time the discovery of cream and butter added to people wanting to milk cattle. not even 300 years ago it was common for families to rely on their animals for food and resources. in fact killing an animal for meat was considered a waste that could only be afforded by the rich. hence smaller livestock, like chickens, were domesticated, and hunting game was considered a way to feed your family.
In norse myth, the first frost giant was created by a great cow (Audhumbla), but because his realm was nothing but ice and one very angry dragon, he had to survive on her milk alone. The version I grew up with also had him gradually weaving clothes from her tail hairs, which he would take one at a time because he couldn't risk not having her milk. Cows were esteemed because of that; they can provide everything, milk as drink, meat and cheese as food, and their hides as clothing. Cows rule.
please don't use gender specific things. Man can also be mother or mother can also be a man. Anyone can lactate. Me as a transmen ( not transman) also feed my transasexual baby. Also cows are bad for planet. Be vegan.

Who thought of being like "oh let me pull these things on this cow. What's this? Milk? Let's drink it!"
Idk.Maybe ther were the first furrys
It's hard to tell. It was probably made into a pseudo cheese before it was drank. Most humans at the time were lactose intolerant.
They were pretending to be a calf
Cow's often drip milk at parturition, which people could have noticed. Same if lactating cows were ever hunted and the udders prepared. Now, for cheese...
Very interesting video but I wish they mentioned how they achieve milk on such a high consumer scale. What happens to the animal?
cows get milked 2-3 times a day, and there are many dairy cow farms. the animal is not harmed, in fact they like it.
how much milk comes out of the cow depends on the breed and age of the cow.
Christina Compton he's lying, or maybe talking about the cow in his farm... Go check your info in your own
lmfao that ignorance
Im talking about the cows on my farm, and i'm also talking about other farms that I have been to. Just using my own knowledge. (friend's farms)
While the cows on your farm and the farms you know may be treated well, the majority of the milk consumers drink do not come from cows who lived a similar lifestyle.
"There's only one thing I hate more than lying, skim milk, which is water that's lying about being milk."

Back in Brazil, I could leave milk for months in the pantry, but when I moved to the US it would go bad by being in the fridge for about 2 weeks. Both me and my roommate are Brazilian, so we always thought it was weird and wondered why it happened. Just sent her a message telling her I found out why lol

It would have been nice to hear about the production of evaporated milk and powdered milk as well
2:01 Sheeps? Pretty sure the plural is sheep
Rufioh it is, but i think he's talking about different species of sheep. Like how we use "peoples" to describe different nations.
Not sheeps but sheep's [milk]
Rufioh pretty sure, he is talking about different kinds of sheep - you can say sheeps, kind of the way you can say peoples
Linda Sliwicka but they use Buffalo as the plural of Buffalo in the same part of the video, so I'm fairly certain it's not a possessive S being used.
Димитър Иванов Admittedly I'm not well versed in sheep, but that sounds very wrong to me.
Makes you appreciate the human body and your mother a whole lot more. Thanks mom!

At 2:01, I want to add a revision. It’s a common misconception that buffalo live in North America. They are actually native to Africa, and only live in North American zoos, much like giraffes or lions. The animal that you are thinking of are bison. I hope this helps 😊

We drink so much milk because of the advertisements.

that's like calling apple juice "apple milk". call it what you want. that's not milk.
Bah art and explains both are so good and easy to understand .
The visuals were amazing. I could screen-shoot any frame for decorative purposes!
They skipped the part where the enzym lactase reduces significantly after weening age, indicating we dont need milk anymore afterwards, and explaining why so many people are lactose intolerant. Chance missed.
Hasn't anyone thought of treating milk with irradiation instead of heating, like we do with canned food? It might avoid the issues with the heating affecting the make up of the milk
thank you very much!
The secretion of the mammary glands is "apocrine" type - the apical portion of the cells is part of the secretion [i.e milk] as well.
I love TED ED videos .. full of knowledge and no BS

Thanke 4 the knowledge.
Jonathan is a good teacher.
I simply LOVE milk ... and I'm lactose intolerant. Poop.
You can get some lactase enzyme from pharmacy and eat milk. I am lactose intolerant too and I do this.
Yes, poop.
There's so many kinds of milk that comes from plants instead of animals! That way, you get to enjoy milk, and you don't cause unnecessary harm to cows and their babies!
@@VixenAurora It's the flavour. There's nothing that can ever, and I mean ever, compare to cow's milk. I was born with eczema, and drinking milk, even mama's, was dangerous as a toddler. Now? There's no way I am giving that up. The gratefulness is that cows raised in our country and neighbouring countries have always practiced care with cattle. It's Masai land.
Just because you are lactose intolerant doesn't mean anything. Everyone sins sometimes. Everyone... sins...
But on a real note, milk is amazing.
Pasteurization was the best yet worst thing that ever happened to dairy.
Watching it second time, still it's informative.
Excellent video. Bravo 👏🏼

Guys look I admit Ted ed might explain it unlike the video but what happen there is just years ago I think Ted ed is trying to explain is that since we humans got smarter we thought of better way to produce milk and thats still good and educational it also tell us about how animals and humans feed their children milk. 🐮💗🙋🏻 Ted ed I support you no matter what
I love this!
i asked myself this for a while thanks!
"Sheeps" 😂
It would’ve been cool if they explained the difference between almond milk and regular milk
Here's the difference:
One is made of almonds
The other is normal, produced by mammals.
Btw the animation is so adorable!
first of all i wanna say im a huge fan of ur channel , great work guyz and i hope u more success
second can u make a video about the pyramids and how were they built ??
Soooo many people are pissed off about not showing what happens to the animals or "how cruel the industry IS", this video was educational and based on the factory methods. It touched the basics and described what gave milk, different methods, the differences in a couple animals, and then went on about the processing. The topic wasnt almond milk and how it's made, nor was it arguing semantics about whether it's humaine or not- there was no misrepresentation to the video because "it failed to talk about blah blah blah". Did it talk about how most animals can't drink milk when they are adults? How it makes them sick? WHY humans can drink milk? There's more "lost information" than just sore cow nipples and cow baby desperation, but that just wasn't what the video was ABOUT. No content creator should be limited by a viewers sensitive insensitivities on other peoples needs and wants, thats raping their content to fit your personal agenda of pissing in your own mouth and putting your big toe in your asshole.
I love milk

WTF! the number of vegans arguing with/insulting people in the comments just because they like fucking cow milk is mind-blowing. I wanted to be a vegan too but they often sound like freaks.
Speedy Cord I admire you're bravery.
You know who also likes milk? Calves. You know who doesn't get to drink it? Calves. You know how many calves a cow gives birth to and taken away within 12 hours? At least 4 or 5. Drinking milk is a barbaric fetish. It's nice that you love another animals breast milk I guess...

Me: I learned a new word today.
My sister: oh yeah, what is it?"
Me: (try to pronounce Mammocytus)
My sister: What does it mean?
Me: I- it- well- I don't know
I heard that it took about nine thousand years after the domestication of cows for humans to become tolerant to the lactose specifically designed for cows.
I'm not sure about other milks, but in human milk, most of it isn't for the baby, it's for the bacteria growing in its gut. Plus, evolutionarily, mammals were originally made to be lactose intolerant after they reached a certain age. These are a few things that he neglected to mention in the video.
As another commenter said, I'm sure it has to do with mother dying and the father having to feed baby, in history. Also some people do better with milk pre pasteurization
“ in human milk, most of it isn't for the baby, it's for the bacteria growing in its gut”
One is the other, dear.
ted ed is the best show
TED-ED should do a vid on food preservatives. That'd be curious to see what goes on there.
Oh yeah
I remember growing up near a farm and drinking milk that just came from a cow, it was hot and completely different to the milk (or should I say empty liquid pus calories) that you get now.
Yup
I grew up on a farm and used to love it when something happened to the house cow and we got to buy 'town milk'. Homogenised milk is the bomb.
Fresh farm milk does taste different . Milk in cartons can take anywhere between few days to few weeks post collection to reach the consumer. Most likely this alongwith all that processing alters the taste
I love dairy. It makes life worth living. Milkshakes, cheesecake, pizza, icecream, hot buttery popcorn.. ..I can go on...
not only you, I love cheese
I try my best to keep my diet in check. Not gonna lie, I could lose some weight, but I'm still within the range of normal. Baby got back.
Doesn't make life worth living for those cows who get their calves taken. I'm sure you could live without a milkshake. Those babies would rather have their mama.
JanetStarChild You can get all that in a vegan cruelty free manner mate! much healthier too
I'm willing to try it. Just point me to the right direction.

I'm lactose intolerant and I'm allergic to milk protein... When I drink milk it takes me like 15 min and then I throw up. That means I have to drink a substitude for milk (if I want some of course). After trying like... everything... I realized that coconut and almond "milk" (I don't care if it's milk or not) are the most healthiest substitudes (and they're also very tasty :3).
