Great job. I lived in Cincinnati for 60 years. I think the city is under rated. The city has one of the top ranked zoos in the country, King Island Amusement Park, The largest Oktoberfest outside of Munich with 700,000 in attendance, One of the largest opening day with the Reds, Riverfest with 500,000 in attendance, Bockfest, many festivals throughout the metro area. 1st professional fire dept was in Cincinnati. Rich in history. So, it's not boring. We used to say "please" instead of "what," but that is going away with the younger generation.

Being underrated is one of the best compliments of any community. I want to visit Cincinnati as a tourist due to this channel.
As a lifelong Pittsburgher who visited Cincy for the first time a few months back I almost felt like I was back at home. It’s honestly kind of wild how similar the feel of both cities are. Either way I thought Cincinnati was really neat and was another of those hidden gem cities that I don’t think gets enough talk.
@robolgatree5815 when I was in Cincy it seemed like a less Pittsburgh version of Pittsburgh if that makes sense. Like all of the stuff that Pittsburgh has just with a little less (not that I’m saying it’s bad). It’s got slightly less hills, less rivers, less bridges, the downtown isn’t quite as large (at least in the terms of its skyline with the buildings, area wise it could actually be bigger but Pittsburgh definitely feels like a larger city than Cincy) and their sports teams don’t have as large of a following. Also less city steps lol. That’s not a knock on Cincinnati at all it’s a great place.
Ngl, before three Rivers was torn down, I always had to look twice when watching a baseball or football game to see if it was here or in Pittsburgh. There are a lot of similarities.
It's been my experience that cities with a prominent River have a different feel than cities without. Every River City I visited - granted that's not a particularly long list - has always felt comfortable to me.
@BobbyT I have often thought of the burgh as the hidden gem in the country and loved visiting in the 1990s when I lived in a small town in Ohio. Visited the area nearly every week. Have often wondered how different my life would have been if I had moved to Pittsburgh rather than moving to St. Louis. I miss the city.
I always think Cincinnati is massively underrated. One of my favorite cities to just go spend a weekend in and hangout
I 100% agree with you about the walk score. With so many distinct neighborhoods - most with their own little “downtown” - much of the city’s housing stock is walkable to restaurants, shops, parks, etc. Even a lot of the inner and middle suburbs (Mariemont, Montgomery, Reading, Sharonville, etc.) are decently walkable.
I think one problem with walk score is that it is looking at everything in the city limits. That is fair in some ways but it is kinda unfair for a city that has topography like Cincinnati. If you look at specific neighoods or addresses, the score is really good or fair for many areas. If you look at another similar city geographically like Pittsburgh, you can see the same thing.
I love Art Deco architecture in Cincinnati has two fantastic examples. The old Central railway station which is now the Cincinnati Museum Center is the epitome of Art Deco with its half dome entrance hall, so perfect that you go inside and stand on one end of the arch and speak quietly. Someone at the other end will hear you perfectly. Also a very cool historical museum on Cincinnati. They offer tours and one of the cool parts is a conference center with the ceiling walls and floors all lined with cork to absorb sound from the passing trains. The other is what used to be the tallest building in the city, Carew Tower. It has some amazing Art Deco detailing, particularly in its interiors, definitely worth seeing.
Also a great TH-camr living in Cincinnati is Feli from Germany, a Munich transplant who talks about the differences between Germany and the US.

I had a college architecture project recently where I was supposed to pick a site for a "dream home" I would design and I ended up choosing a vacant lot in Cincinnati. If I move out of my own state for a better family raising situation, the Midwest is the prime attraction.
In the talk about rail lines I don't believe Union Terminal was mentioned. This is a beautiful Art Deco train station which is currently used by Amtrack and for various museums. Well worth a visit if you are in Cincinnati.
Having grown up in the St. Louis MO area, I always feel at home in Cincinnati in a way that outpaces my actual amount of time spent there; there's just really something wonderfully familiar among all of the Midwest river cities. If you ever find yourself feeling obligated to fight back against the "flyover mentality" that many folks have about the middle of our country, point folks to Cincinnati - it hits above its population size in so many ways! And of course, try some Goetta while you're there.
Wow man I’ve lived here practically my entire life and you nailed it like a local. I watch a lot of videos of people visiting Cincinnati and you are the most spot on. Plus you get points for liking the chili and goetta.
My favorite (and I’m from Chicago) is Montgomery Inn (the boathouse). I’d work up an appetite after a few months and knock down 2 slabs first thing getting in town. And I’m not a big guy, either…lol
Honestly Cincinnati was a city I had no desire to explore, despite me loving to explore cities around the country. I heard that the highways decimated the downtown and thought it was an asphalt hellscape. But thank you for this video - I definitely want to explore it now. I had no idea it had such a plethora of cool neighborhood to explore, nor the interesting hilly terrain. I appreciated the comparisons to Pittsburgh -- Pittsburgh is one of my favorite cities in the USA, and knowing that Cincinnati has may similarities to it makes me want to visit even more. I love the way you analyze and present places!

Nice video! Cinci, Columbus and Cleveland have some of the best urban historical neighborhoods in the midwest. Definitely worth exploring.

@@David_K_pi Roebling Suspension is older. It's basically Brooklyn Bridge's model. Built the same, Brooklyn is younger and longer. A lot of neat history between the two bridges.

In the name "Over the Rhine," the "Rhine" refers to the Miami and Erie Canal -- crossed by the area's heavily German population in their treks from downtown. In the 1910's, the unused, fetid canal was drained, coverted to a subway tube (see 13:31), and covered with a boulevard, Central Parkway.

I wholeheartedly agree! When I first moved to Ohio I saw this bank and couldn't figure out why someone would name it as such.
It resulted from the merger of the Fifth National Bank and the Third National Bank.

Cincinnati is a very underrated city in my opinion. I have worked downtown for the last few years and have no complaints. The CBD parks and walkways along the river are beautiful and continue to get better and better (Lytle Hotel's new park is my favorite). Not to mention great food spots all around plus seasonal events to do as well. I currently live in Clifton. If you're an architecture fan like me, you'd love to meander and find the different parks scattered around the city. In terms of transportation, I would agree that it is a very walkable city. Each area has its own walkability - living in Clifton it is very easy to walk everywhere you'd need. Wish we still had those incline railways, that would be interesting!
I happen to be a real estate agent here in the area and a lot of those houses you showed, I recognized, and they are already pending/off market! They have been flying off the shelves recently - hopefully more people continue to move here and learn to love the city and culture. Great video sir, I love them all! Thanks for visiting.
I was born and raised in Cincinnati, lived here my whole life besides two years in Chicago and I absolutely love everything about it. I think you did a great run down of my city and am glad you also think it is a great place!
At 15:00, the key company, as shown in the image, is GE Aerospace. GE Honda Aero engines is a much lesser joint venture. GE Aerospace was formed from the former GE Aircraft Engines division of GE plus some other aerospace components manufacture. GE Aerospace is a Big 4 aero engine supplier. Other than equity holdings, GE Aerospace is the remainder of the once great GE corporation.

We recently moved to Louisville from the Northeast, and have visited Cincinnati numerous times. We absolutely love it. Their museums and parks are fantastic, while the cultural atmosphere is laid-back and welcoming. Cinci has become one of our all-time favorite cities. Can't forget it's also the setting for "WKRP," the greatest TV show in the history of the universe!
Oh man didn't get to talk about Newport hardly at all! Even though it's across the river in Kentucky, it's where there was lots of fun stuff. The aquarium is there, and a really great park where there's various food festivals throughout the year.
Didn't mention the zoo at all 😞, which is a world class zoo. One of the best in the country! Oh and because there's a huge huge amount of German heritage in the city, it's home to one of the biggest Oktoberfest outside Germany. I guess public transit is ok in the city proper, but the suburbs don't hardly have any transit so everyone relies on cars. This is a reason I ended up moving away. Growing up in Cincinnati was alright but it's a shame it couldn't have been better.

I lived in Cincinnati from 2009-2011. I lived near the Museum Centert. It was so nice to be able to walk downtown or to Kentucky. I hope some genterfercation continues. The Queen Coty (of Ohio) has nice thing to offer. Wonderful video, Kyle!

As a trucker,I had to go pick up a load at a shipper in Cincinnati. While I was checking in at the guard house,I asked a 20 year old and a 30 year old, *"So,exactly where on the dial is WKRP?"* They both went to their phones. Ten seconds later,the 20 year old looks up and says *"Thats a T.V. show"*. The 30 year old had a embarrased smile on her face,as she should have known that.

Great video. Also, if you go back, you should visit Devou Park in Northern Kentucky. I have been to a lot of parks in this area including all the ones in Butler a County and all but a few in Hamilton county and would say Devou is the best by far! It has an unforgettable view of the Cincinnati skyline.

Cincinnati and the river cities in Northern Kentucky are so full of potential. The Walk Score is dragged down by the burbs, if you look at specific neighborhoods like OTR we have some of the most walkable neighborhoods in the country.
I appreciate how comprehensive this video is. This included essential information about the region often left out of these types of urban breakdowns; you included municipal AND metropolitan population stats, different maps and neighbourhood tidbits, plus essential transit information including the current streetcar and possible extensions, and the funiculars from days past. Excellent video; appreciate the attention to these details.
This is a decent high-level overview. There are a few points that were missed. I see people have already mentioned the Roebling bridge.
_Every_ neighborhood has a least one green space, in various degrees of development. Eden Park is one of those, and it's bigger than it looks. There's one across from Music Hall called Washington Park, and there are smaller public green spaces throughout downtown.
Smale Park is only a part of the Riverfront park, that area includes multiple smaller parks that are right next to each other.
Fifth Third, briefly, gets its name from when the 5th national Bank and the Third national bank merged. There's more to it than that but that's the basics.
Most P&G jobs here are white collar. We used to have a lot more manufacturing, but like much of the rust belt, that has changed.
Something else that was missed is the arts community, both professional and amateur. For city this size, it's pretty significant.
I've lived here all but 10 years of my life (I'm in my 50s). I spent my thirties in Colorado. I'm glad you enjoyed our city, and I hope you come back and get a chance explore even more.

The walkabiity is good in downtown and older surrounding neighborhoods, but the suburbs can be terrible, especially the ones built around major strodes. (Rt 4, Beechmont Ave, Coleraine Avenue, parts of Montgomery Rd.)
We moved to the Cincy area 12 years ago from the Washington DC area. I love it so much here! We live about halfway between Cincy and Dayton. My auntie said the same thing about Fifth Third Bank when she came here for a visit! 😂
Nice profile Kyle. When talking about the population, I realized that Lexington, KY (where I live) has more people if you subtract the Cincy metro area. I grew up in central KY, and we always thought of Cincinnati as "The biggest city around," in the 70's and 80's and it was a treat to go. Keep up the good work.
Lexington is merged with Fayette County, so it makes more sense to compare populations between Fayette Co and Hamilton Co

Great video! I grew up in Cincinnati and this was a great overview of my hometown. I think you could have talked a little more about the East side of Cincinnati, but I understand the time limitations. But still this was great! I love your city and state profiles and happy to see Cincy on there

Really enjoying this series because you've highlighted a number of cities that fly under the radar or tend to grab headlines for the wrong reasons.
I'd like to submit a few suggestions for this series, if you're taking any:
-Louisville (or Lexington, which is even further under the radar)
-Salt Lake City
-Albuquerque
-San Diego (since LA and San Francisco grab all the attention)
-San Antonio (since DFW, Houston, and nowadays Austin grab all the attention)
-Omaha and/or Lincoln
-Tampa

If you follow Nathaniel’s advice and visit Jungle Jim’s unique restrooms, keep in mind they’re back in the beer and wine section (kinda appropriate, don’t you think?) Not the restrooms towards the front where the long lines of checkout counters are.

Incredibly timely for me personally. I’ve been a very avid distance runner for 23 years, and ran the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon for the first time in early May of 2004. I’m going to be returning for the race this year in a month 20 years later. There were many things that I missed 20 years ago, from being a big baseball fan and not getting to a Reds game, to being an amusement/theme park fan and not visiting King’s Island, to simply not learning or embracing the city very much. I’m really looking forward to catching up with all of that this year, and this helps with my research.

I enjoyed this far more than I would have thought possible. I love those homes at 11:57 and the sidewalks right before that. While I recognize those inclines are an obstacle for some, for me I think living there would help me shed some excess pounds.
Kyle, one thing I was curious about was the culture of Cincinnati. Of course, you _did_ touch upon the German culture, but what I've always wondered about was whether or not Cincinnati has a _Southern_ flavor to it. Right there on the river (as demonstrated by the Underground Railroad Center), I just wonder if it's a North meets South kind of thing.
I do think Cincinnati has a southern style. It’s either the northernmost southern city or the southernmost northern city. I would say there’s just as many transplants here from the south than from the north. It’s also not as cold as the rest of the Midwest.
I think there’s a noticeable difference between Northern Kentucky and the Ohio side of the river. Not better or worse, just a bit of a cultural difference…which I love. You get the best of both worlds.

I have a coworker named Kyle and because of this fine channel, I refer to him exclusively as, "HowdyitsKyle."
I went to college in Cincinnati and I arrived in the last year before the gentrification of OTR. When I first got there I remember constantly hearing to avoid that area it’s super dangerous etc etc. By the time I left 5 years later it was the only place anyone ever wanted to go.
Another cool thing about Cincinnati that’s always overlooked is Jungle Jim’s. It’s an international grocery store but kind of more like a day trip sort of thing. It’s genuinely humongous AND some of the stuff it sells can only be found there within the US.
Last thing, I love telling people about this. Cincinnati chili is actually a fusion of 3 Greek dishes customized for an American palet. The original creators opened a Greek restaurant in the 1940s that didn’t do well because the locals weren’t familiar with it. They closed, did research, and created Cincinnati “chili” based on some of their other dishes and the rest is history
Detroit style Coney's have a similar origin story too.

Next city profile to add to the list should be Minneapolis, it’s a very bikeable city compared to most cities in the US and that’s with a cold snowy climate. Decent transit. Has its history. But Definitely an underrated city. And especially since Minnesota ranked #1 in the top 10 state video.
