  • Process description:
    Friction stir based additive manufacturing (FSAM) is a recently developed method for additive manufacturing that builts parts in a solid state, operating below the melting point. Because of its solid-state approach, FSAM offers advantages such as reduced residual stresses and a markedly decreased vulnerability to issues like porosity and hot-cracking, which are common in traditional fusion-based metallic additive manufacturing processes. These distinctive characteristics position FSAM as a compelling substitute for conventional forging techniques when producing sizable components for aerospace, naval, nuclear, and automotive purposes.
    Advantages:
    Solid-state process in open atmosphere. Deposition by deforming.
    No solidification defects. Process the unweldable.
    Low-energy pathway to manufacturing with reduced heat input and residual stresses.
