Darryl was staying in the same hotel as me and the staff said he was THE best, nicest, coolest, funnest most wonderful guest that ever stayed there. Thanks for the music Bro, hope you're funkin' it big in heaven
When we get down to it i just love the way you do it. We never be the same. Almost put a tear in the eye. I couldnt mix if my life depended on it . All these Trax records and UMN Chicago house. Anyway i got dinner to cook
I met Darryl some years before this at a high school talent show where he sang Minnie Riperton's "Loving You" in her key and matching every note she sang. His range was that wide. I backed him on piano for a few performances every now and then, but since I wasn't really into House Music I didn't know he sang this until somebody told me. I heard it played on some gigs during breaks and what not, but after I found out it was him, I knew his voice. He was a great and funny guy, and a phenomenal talent. RIP.
I remember going to Tenerife and hearing this full blast in Sergeant Peppers night club, it was just amazing , fantastic dance track , they played it all the time , I was 24 at the time and would give anything to be back there now , enjoying life as a young person. to those all young folk out there , enjoy and live every moment while it's there.
Dance music just wasn't my bag at all, as i was more guitar orientated. Saw this performance just short of my 20th birthday, and it sure turned me around!! R.I.P Big Man.
Love this! Everyone thinks he's miming like all the other plastics on TOTP, and then he just bugs out freestyle and no one knows what the **** to think. The first 'House' record to chart in the UK.
An absolute banger of a tune. Darryl Pandy also appeared on The Tube at this time and he was hilarious. The guy didn't give a F*ck. Never a good idea going out in new shoes though.
Thank you so much uploading this remember the performance very well , House has a Feeling the following year became a very deep House and Garage fan and could not imagine not being a massive fan . Farley Jackmaster Funk was one of the pioneers . Thank you Chicago glad you are the birth place of this very fine genre . I am from the UK where it is also where House kicked off . Thank you for this reminded me to add this to my playlist .
@@francofan100 sadly they did wheel him out for the last episode though. The BBC killed TotP. They moved the day and time it was on, so it clashed with soap operas, and then used the obviously lower audience figures as a reason to get rid altogether.
This was my first album of house music DJ from Chicago Illinois send me this album 1987 the song on the album was love can't turn around the whole album was great rest in peace my dear brother that was one of the best house music album house music will never die rest in peace my dear brother
ive met this guy after a show doing this very song ! the microphone pa system broke down and you could still hear him sing note for note over the music hes got one amazing powerful voice ...love this guys talent
Northern English people latched onto it right away. No accident that the Merseybeat, Northern Soul and Madchester scenes come from there - swarms of club owners, DJs and young 'uns with their fingers on the pulse of the US underground since the 50's.
Yeah as GMDP said it was Northern England that embraced the Chicago House scene just as they had done with the Black American Soul scene in the 1960's / early 70's with the both the Twisted Wheel in Manchester and Wigan Casino in Wigan venues that promoted the music. With 'House' it was clubs like The Hacienda in Manchester, Cream in Liverpool and Mr Craig's in Leeds in the 80's that embraced that scene.
I remember watching this on TOTP when i was a kid.. this guy was brilliant, this was probably my favorite TOTP act ever. . only Adam & the Ants were as memorable.
Got to remember #totp and #bbc actually didnt really want this mainstream at that time and didnt really count imports as popular. A few presenters like John Peel and Annie Nightingale tried their best over the years to break out new music but this track as well as jack your body on mainstream was unheard of. Its described in the captions as a defining moment BUT this was only because house music was still largely underground with the more popular house tracks played on request in mainstream nightclubs however the #BBC discovered it had got to the point where they just could not ignore it anymore. They seem to be a changed organisation now chasing new artists, but back then was a different attitude altogether. Long live #house #music and its current renaissance.👍.
Serious tune!!.... thank you Requiem for the quality upload!! I was driving in the mountains this week on my way to a friends playing radio roulette with the Spanish stations... and this GOLD came on....wow back to 1986 in a heartbeat
I remember this on top of the pops at the time. A weird thing happened soon as he kicked off his shoes. The transmission went off until his performance ended. Did anyone else experience this? Maybe the BBC cut him off as he was going off script.

You should've heard it in a big club with a good sound system. I heard it on TOTP and thought it decent, but then I heard it in a big nightclub in Manchester the following weekend and it absolutely blew my mind. Within weeks I'd packed my job in, to go record shopping and clubbing in the USA.

Wow that’s nice, he looked like a big character. I bought this and still have it. The record that set the way. Brilliant!!!!!!
1986 - 14 year old me - "I HAVE to dance to this NOW"
2018 - 46 year old me - "I HAVE to dance to this NOW just slower"
I know the feeling of having to dance a little slower :-D
That’s ok the singer danced Slow too.
2024 - 52yo - and still dancing - quality tuneage!
What a performance, way beyond what the audience was expecting, what an entertainer, even one of the backing singers starts to laugh by the end,

This is why i love London because they have always showed Chicago House Music love from day one
Chicago is the original birth place of House Music.
Well said. That's facts.
I was standing right in front of him in that studio, I was only 14, he was so lovely and funny before and after the performance
wow ur so lucky 2 have seen this what a performer what was he like ?
the audience didn't react that much. do you think they were shocked/transfixed?!
eridgeboy she already told you, he was lovely and funny.
One of the most iconic performances in top of the pops history. The next day at school this is all we talked about.
DistantCousin je was a big character, we were all transfixed totally
The best TOTP performance EVER full stop! If I feel a bit fed up I just come and find this video and it lifts me up without fail every single time 😄
Ahhh yes 100% I agree

If not the first House track (a contentious point), it was definitely the first Chicage House track.
Iconic performance

Immense showmanship
Legendary performance and never beaten.
This is a very good quality video ! This is a great tribute to these Chicago House music pioneers !
crucial moment 30 years ago
I like the way he says "girl" with a cheeky grin.
This folks is why TOTP lasted over 40 years. We can't forget Saville, but it was the music we tuned in for, not him.
Fortunately Savile hadn’t presented it regularly for two years by this point
@@francofan100 sadly they did wheel him out for the last episode though.
The BBC killed TotP. They moved the day and time it was on, so it clashed with soap operas, and then used the obviously lower audience figures as a reason to get rid altogether.
And all the English kids went: "WTF?!!! I don't understand it but I can't stop dancing..." and the rest is history...
