The treatment of Serena Williams has always bothered me. She definitely gets special treatment. Jehovah’s Witnesses are told to not play sports in school, and it’s something I am really sad I missed out on during my high school life. The rules just don’t apply to Williams I guess.
She established herself as a tennis player and pursued her career before she even got baptized and she wears riskè outfits very unbecoming as a Witness.
Our son played in the nhl. You can put your kids in sports but it’s frowned upon. We just did it and ignored the criticism. Over the years we stopped being a member of this cult.
I totally applaude your decision regarding putting your kids in sports. We did as well. While never making it to the professional level (we were involved in hockey also!), there were innumerable benefits to our sons - learning to be a team member, character building, healthy physical activity and making some amazing memories. As a consequence, we were sort of “marked” in our congregation. I guess that was also a benefit. Our whole family is free of this organization now.
@@PricklyPear-g3r I agree about the marked comment. Our family is happy to be free as well. It’s so odd to me still when we all celebrate Christmas. Having been raised as a JW my first real Christmas was at age 50!
I've said it before, and I'll say it again; Watchtower is a BUSINESS! And a struggling one at that. The only principle they uphold universally is protecting their bottom line. EVERYTHING else is flexible. Serena Williams is a brand ambassador, and that's good for business.
@@jessicaesmeralda7576But, in all honesty, though, with the “Thriller” LP-and particularly after the Pepsi commercial-Wacko Jacko was simply too bizarre even for the Society. The situation with him was so outlandish that the Society instructed the news servants to take the “no comment” route during the 1987 district assembly. Just how crazy does someone have be for even the Society to distance itself from him?
Just like scientology. Having celebrities brings in more people who are infatuated with them. It's a point of reference for members to refer to and feel important. It's Watchtower's marketing tool. Many think these celebrities are paying watchtower. Watchtower has bought a lot of people. It's all about image. Religion is a business and operates just like one.
The founder Charles Russell celebrated holidays. it’s when Rutherford gained leadership that all celebration of holidays stopped. I wish JW would research this fact!
Absolutely, thanks for the reminder. Once WT staff rewrote the Bible in 1950, the transformation to an isolationist cult was complete. Prior to that, it was a regular religion that had no problems with ANY holidays until Rutherford hijacked it.
That’s exactly what I found out when I researched the religion & I’m not even a JW. Unfortunately my aunt is the only family member that is JW & she’s been in this religion for decades. However, through further research I found my aunt half-assed it the entire time. She didn’t even do half things she was supposed to do. I don’t even think she was even baptized.
Charles Taze Russell was NOT the founder of the JW religion. He was responsible for the modern-day start of JWs here in the U.S., but he was NOT the founder of the religion. Jehovah's Witnesses have been around for thousands of years. As far as Pastor Russell celebrating holidays is concerned, he might have celebrated holidays at first, but he and others did not have a full knowledge of the truth back then. The light gets brighter and brighter as our understanding of the Bible becomes clearer as time progresses.--Proverbs 4:18.
All respect to Serena, she earned everything she did. Not taking way from that. Every time someone brings her up, i bring up the double standard and how many talented witnesses i know who had their flames snuffed, and various other rules that hurt witnesses, like the elder who had to step down because his daughter, who was an adult, was marrying someone who was going to be baptized at the next convention, meaning not baptized. Most people also scratch their head at that, rightfully.
@@peterbunyan3924 Yes, respect. Becoming an Olympian is a big deal, no matter who you are. That doesn't mean I would let her tell me how to live, but it does mean I would let her tell me how to play her sport.
My problem is not with Serena. It is with the double standard that allows her to be such a ‘part of this world’ without comment from the governing body. As children we were not allowed to play school sports or join other worldly activities that other children participated in. Every time she ‘thanks Jehovah’ for helping her win a match or a sports award, I want to scream! It just proves to me that she doesn’t really understand the rules or doctrines of the Jehovah’s Witness’ nor have the Elders in her congregation ever spoken to her about it! I do believe it is about notoriety and money. There is definitely a double standard for the everyday, hard working, middle class Witness.
I didn’t even think about that, they care more about money than anything else which is why you’re not allowed to talk to your fellowship relatives but if you’re old, your children are allowed to come take care of you just so watchtower doesn’t have to
It's the same reason Katherine Jackson is also an upstanding member in this cult. She openly admitted to accepting birthday gifts from her famous kids, yet no one speeched her off or castigated her.😂
I seen soo many Jws send me videos of her getting baptised and I was shocked. The idolatry of someone super worldly. Not surprised since they worship the governing body.
The fact she’s allowed to be all public with her tennis speaks volumes within itself. I’ve seen SO much propaganda that condemns sports as a waste of time and a distraction from Jehovah, hell there’s even a Caleb and Sofia video about it I think Mind you it is also a pretty good propaganda tool too I suppose
I was raised a JW by my mom. Dad was agnostic ex Air Force. Dad and i went to a game and they played the anthem. What do I do. I stood up proudly put my hand on my heart like a proud Aussie.
As kids we would attend our schools sporting events and always stood with everyone else to show respect. Just didn’t put our hand over our heart or say the pledge. It was the same in the classroom.
Right. They never removed her ... or her parents ... for playing international tennis competitions FOR YEARS but they're going to remove her for carrying the torch. Right.
Back when I was a kid, I was a JW. I never stood for the pledge of allegiance, no one ever said anything to me. I never stood for the natl anthem, again , no one ever said anything to me.
I was thinking the same thing when I saw that tableau of the family. Admittedly, I haven’t attended a professional baseball game in easily thirty years, back when free tickets would be distributed to all the students at school. Nonetheless, when I did attend ball games, the fact that I remained seated during the national anthem was never an issue. No one even gave me so much as a cold stare. The Society loves presenting the worst-case scenario at every opportunity.
@@thomash.schwed3662Yup. They are ridiculous. No one ever cared if we were sitting and many “worldly” people don’t stand for the national anthem, either. Funny, I know that brother. He’s an elder and he and his wife live at bethel. They have no kids, of course. Waiting for the new system 🤦♀️

It seems no one said too much against Watchtower president Nathan Knorr either when he, having forbidden you to take that oath, took the oath himself in order to get a passport. The old 'don't do as I do, do as I say.'
At the local level, too - businessmen and other people perceived as influential - such as families of elders - get treated a whole lot more generously than people who haven't got pull. One of a thousand things that opened my eyes after a decade of devotion.
Serena deserve all her achievements, she worked hard. But she didn’t get baptized as a youth but after all her accomplishments and retirement. The average witness children get the life sucked out of them and their dreams and talents crushed. It’s tragic. Serena did not give anything up for Jehovah. Her children won’t either.
@@drkaceyyeah but now her kids are millionaires as she insured they would be by following her dreams. Her kids are very likely to be able to follow their dreams since they are millionaires and won’t have to choose between schooling or training /competing (if they choose sports) or providing for themselves financially WHILE being active in the organization. So they will be able to maintain their activity in the org and follow their dreams. By following her dreams she made it possible for her children to do the same without needing to sacrifice their other interests since their essential needs have already been met.
The first clip of the young boy wanting to sign the birthday card for his classmate brought me to tears. All the over thinking just over signing a card. Over something so simple…no wonder people who have been in it for decades had difficulty making decisions & over thing to much over things that don’t need to much thought & energy.
Also, when I was a kid, there was a rule that we couldn't participate in sports, even school teams, because Jehovah's witnesses aren't supposed to compete ... for some reason. I had to hide the fact I was playing for multiple school teams (forged mother's signature, lied and said I had to stay in after school to complete projects, etc. ... Ooooo I was a REAL sinner! LOL)
Around 1994 a group of us jws went to a hockey game and we all sat for the national anthem. I felt totally dumb. Then he asked me if Jack Kemp the us congressman walked in would i stand? I said yes...? Really weird.
Cult leaders are never "in a pinch". They can rationalize anything and the cult members will happily accept it without question, even if it contradicts how regular people are treated. That's why it's a cult.
I remember when the Olympics were in Britain in 2012 and an elder from one congregation had the privilege of being a torch bearer. Needless to say he was removed quite promptly!!
Thank you for doing this. I was disgusted seeing her last night, being part of what the WT describes as a nationalistic rite filled with pagan Greek tradition. This is the same as setting up a "Nimrod Bush" (Christmas Tree). The Awake had an article back in the day about how absolutely pagan the Olympics are, and that no true Christian would be involved in it. If she gets a pass it will only be because she gives money to WT. Two separate classes within the org. BTW, is she still a spokeswoman for UNICEF? Any rank and file JW would be slammed for this behavior.
I can’t figure out WHY Serena Williams wants to be a JW and raise her children in a way that she didn’t have to suffer. Let’s hope she doesn’t let them get baptized until, like her, they get to fulfill their dreams.
@@Katiegirlluv I believe she was (sort of) raised in it. More her mother than father. The father saw her and her sister’s potential in tennis and moved them along that path. I believe there is a movie called “King Richard” about it. Stars Will Smith playing the role of the Dad, Richard.
This is not the first thing Serena has been involved in as a newly baptized JW. I mean, her & the family attended The Nutcracker around Xmas. She’ll continue to live her life as is, just like Prince did & nothing will happen. WT have double standards, period. They even have double standards for Elders who commit sins b4 appointments & confess to them yeeeeeears down the line.
So Jehovah god waves his Holy Spirit wand and helps Serena win tennis matches and earn millions, but apparently he can’t be bothered when innocent children and babies die from war or starvation. And this is who we’re suppose to worship? Yeah, that’s a hard pass for me.
Agree! And I also realized at this year convention drama that Jehovah didn’t care Herod gives command to kill other children under 2 and SAVES his only son😮The scene Herod’s soldier going for those pure, innocent kid was SO shocking😢I questioned, how couldn’t this God STOPPED Herod’s plan!
The Olympics is definitely a no-no. The guilt I felt when in middle school, the entire grade had an Olympic unit. We spent two weeks learning about The Olympic Games culminating in a mock Olympics. I wasn't about the sit two weeks of class out and I wasn't going to miss all the fun. It was like tween field day. So I kept my mouth shut and didn't say a word to my mom about the country I was assigned to represent, the flags and decor I had to make for it and the competition complete with National Anthems of the winners "countries."
Absolutely she gets "special treatment" and I really question just exactly what her true "association and/or agenda" with this cult really is about. ALL IMO.
Money talks which give her leniency to the rules of jws. The average jw would be considered worldly for doing the same things such as a lifetime athletic career, red carpet events she attended, music video with Beyonce, pregnant before marriage, etc. etc. Serena got baptized after all her accomplishments and fame, but she was raised as a jw and knows the rules.
We don't know what her mother taught her or believed. Her mother seemed to be very influential in her tennis career along with Dad. Perhaps the mother didn't feel JW rules/goals applied to her or daughters either. We don't really know.
My goodness!!!!! I was literally just talking about this recently. From red carpet, and parties, to skimpy dresses, to awards ceremony, etc. HOW??? I couldn't even look at magic shows as a kid. Chastised for everything 😢😢😢 how?
I love Serena and seeing her do her thing! Her presence anywhere she pleases is a constant reminder of the GB’s hypocrisy and they are hard pressed to tell her no, so she continues. On the other hand, we dare you to tell her no, we really do. As Wally said, that would be a PR nightmare. It’s great seeing them with their hands tied.
Because she's highly favored by "Jehovah" and Watchtower and those of us who were raised in (and those who are still trapped in that dreaded cult) aren't. Ah, smell that delicious hypocrisy cake that's burning in some oven in Warwick, New York.
But she's the one with the money!! So the question, why did she bind herself to a strict religion with lots of extraordinary rules & prohibits 'worldly' association if she's not going to adhere to those tenets? @jemz4555
Prince was also a JW. He kept performing music, maybe not his more sexually charging music, but he didn't stop being a musician. Several celebrities have claimed being JWs. Its a sadness
Disfellowshipping her would be catastrophic for their PR and they can’t really afford it right now. She’s bringing massive donations as well and all those lawsuits won’t pay for themselves. 😁

Venus and Serena presented with Quinta Brunson, wearing skimpy dresses, and had the NERVE to villify another sport celeb for his Christian values. On stage. Crazy
Not celebrating birthdays has nothing to do with pagan rituals. Witnesses are told they can't celebrate birthdays because John the Baptist had his head chopped off at (can't remember the king) the king's birthday in order to please his wife. Somehow, that prohibits godly people from celebrating their own or their children's birthdays ... or are they no longer teaching that BS
It was Herod's Daughter, Salome who Herod was trying to please. He asked her what she wanted for her birthday wish and she replied, Bring me the head of John the Baptist on a plate. I have always struggled with the logic of that situation because, Jesus said that the greatest human he knew was John the Baptist. Yet when he wanted to carry out the odd miracle or two he resurrected Lazarus but not his pal John. From this illustration as the greatest biblical example of, throwing someone under the bus, it showed Jesus wasn't so into JTB as he would have us believe.
@@jonathanmills5747 Right well same difference. Ridiculous excuse for prohibiting people from celebrating their birthdays. I mean, they like to go one about how life is the greatest gift from God so we need to be thankful and treat our bodies like temples, but hey! Don't celebrate that precious gift from God! Because it offends him? 🤔
@@jonathanmills5747Actually, it was Herod Antipas’ birthday. Salome, his stepdaughter, was dancing, and in exchange Herod offered her whatever she wanted, up to “the half of the kingdom”. After consulting with her mother, Herodias, she asked for the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter. Antipas at first tried to get out of his agreement only to acquiesce when told that his refusal would cause him to lose face with his guests.
@@thomash.schwed3662 thanks for your words, but my n "new light" interpretation was based on me not correctly knowing what I was talking about. (I'm being sarcastic). I learned that inaccurate guessing technique from the bible studies I have had over the years.
She was thanking Jehovah for assisting her in her sport when our children were not allowed to participate in sports. I started school in the 50’s and there was no question about how we conducted ourselves. My parents went to the school and explained to our teachers that we would sit through the anthem and stand during the pledge of allegiance with our hands at our sides looking respectfully at the flag. It wasn’t until my family moved to the state of Washington and saw what we considered the cowardice and hypocrisy of the families within the congregation we were attending. At a school function or sporting event that we might attend and noted other families there we were really shocked to see them make sure to be up at the concession stands or walking around so as not to be sitting in the stands as the anthem began to play. At every event we ever attended, we were the only JW family present that was sitting. Today at 75 years old and having left the organization 8 years ago I stand out of respect for those who have served and for the families that have lost sons, fathers and husbands serving their country.
I have BEEN discussing this topic for years. I have tremendous respect & admiration for what Serena & Venus have accomplished. They have made history and I'm proud to say I have seen them both play at the US Open. Their imagery is everywhere. I have no issue with any of that. They BOTH know what they have accomplished, the incredible lives they have are IMPOSSIBLE for everyday, "rank & file" JWs and it is frustrating that they let this "JWs are just like others with incredible success" narrative continue after all these years. But what annoys me the MOST are the everyday, "regular" JWs claiming Serena & Venus and ACTING like they are so great and acceptable when THEY KNOW if it was anyone they knew doing not even a third of what the Williams Sisters have done, they would have been kicked out of this goofy azz cult or at the very least, "marked" and judged terribly for it. JWs do this all the time with celebs and those governing nobodies look the other way because they are getting niiiice donations from these very wealthy "JWs." The "lovey dovey" comments on their social accounts are the most telling. The way JWs just LOVE Serena and Venus is so hypocritical & fake. The Williams Sisters are not the only ones either. Watchtower leadership been doing this and "allowing" it for years. Just look at all the support Marques Houston gets on his social accounts from JWs and he CLEARLY groomed an underage girl and now they have TWO kids. I could go on. The Scotts. Larry Graham. Prince. MJ (although he got some pushback over Thriller in the 80s), Coco Rocha. Rich people have different rules. And watchtower leaders are full of doodoo. They are NOT "different from the world" or many other religions in this respect.
Seeing her get special treatment and enjoying the best of both worlds without having to lose family and do what she wants makes me feel betrayed. I couldn't so much as play chess or school sports (not that I was athletic enough to begin with) and yet seeing this gets my blood boiling. To any JWs saying "She's not a real Witness" is bologna. She is a babtised witness and gets to wear clothes that would get you counseled by the Elders and then some. Gets to go to parties that would get you counseled or marked.
It won't be the first time the watchtowers do this "special treatment" to their wealthie/famous members. Do you remember The Jackson family? Michael, Janet, LaToya, etc...were able to do whatever they want in exchange to a hefty donation. When $$ talks, no problem. Bad witness watchers.
Definitely knew it was a double standard when some of the sisters used to brag about the rich ones in the congregation. I used to think about how I thought that wasn’t a normal thing for JW’s to do. Idolizing riches and such.
I asked my mother that's s JW about a sister that got DF years ago. If she heard anything about her. She told me she was doing really good. Married a doctor and they bought a new house 🤣. That's why I don't bother attending JW meetings. They act a way in hall and another at home

You’re kind of assigning qualities to her that we don’t know that she has. She isn’t calling out their rules. She doesn’t allow her daughter to celebrate birthdays. Her husband is now a Jehovas witness too. These are recent decisions that she made. She isn’t calling out the church’s hypocrisy, she’s fully bought into it.

Well at least they're inconsistent as ever .. it will be ok For Serena just keep writing those checks to Watchtower Corp!
I wanna see what happens too....I walked away years ago....on my own after I realized (doing deep study of many articles and other bibles) that this "organization" is not godly religion but rather something else ruled by misogynous men. Others including my biological sister wants to know why I left. I tell them that that is between me and Jehovah (I do believe that God has a proper name, which has nothing to do with the "organization"). Plus, I don't want to influence their personal division. I was not reproved or disfellowshipped. I was sitting in the Hall after 12 years and noticing so much that didn't make sense, got up and walked out. Not angry or anything. I did learn a lot, because before them, I had no religious knowledge of God, Jesus, Apostles...nothing. So the JWs gave me a bases and a will to want to learn more. But when I' TOLD not to read other Bibles or information, then of course I will do that just...READ IT! Because I want to know what you think I should not know. WTF! I hated the fake way that they talk almost is whispers. And the women were always to nosey and I was always putting one of them in their place...saying back off and I was a JW then. They get in your business all under the guise of "being loving". They'd ask questions of me that I would never ask of them or anyone I didn't know. The fact, yes look up facts of how many of the men, including "elders" have been found guilty of mishandling women (but they try to keep that hush-hush). And, LAWD, everything outside of their stuff is "demonic". I listen to my sister (I really regret introducing her to this "organization" as they have her mind totally and she believes everything they say and so afraid that she will be struck down if she looks at anything that contradicts the "organization's" truth) and laugh or ignore some of her rants and fears. I have to remind her that it was I who introduced her...she and I are 19 years apart and I have a must stronger mind and am not easily influenced and I have always been able to tell people to kick rocks if you step on what is right for me too much. Plus I am not easily intimidated. For me God is GOD and only HE is all-knowing and omniscient and omnipresent. The Bible, all of them shows that God decided to speak to whomever HE decided HE wanted to speak to or to reveal to. And for an "organization" to say that the Almighty GOD only speaks to those few men is just BS. Hell, all you have to do is read the entire history of the JWs and if you have any sense you can see that their rules are based first on one or more of those men that started this "organization" with a little bible sprinkled in and with much twisted.
Imo JWs like to gossip about how cool a celebrity got baptized as some cheap thrill to validate their beliefs. However, simultaneously from what I've experienced is they don't actually really count them as Jws. If they did, they would need to hold them accountable. On another note, I found it rich how she got on stage during a recent award and talked trash about the football player that gave the commencement speech. JW's equally support traditional values and have far more disturbing and dangerous ideologies... 🤷

The treatment of Serena Williams has always bothered me. She definitely gets special treatment. Jehovah’s Witnesses are told to not play sports in school, and it’s something I am really sad I missed out on during my high school life. The rules just don’t apply to Williams I guess.
She didn't have a Witness dad, that's why. Same as MJ. I remember people in 1983 telling me "but he's our brother!"
I’m sure the monetary donations help with the special treatment!!
People like her make watchtower look like a joke when many people who came into the org from the ‘world’ were really serious about the ‘truth.’
She established herself as a tennis player and pursued her career before she even got baptized and she wears riskè outfits very unbecoming as a Witness.
I agree! I could've been captain of the synchronized swimming team!
Good for you for doing that!

Prince too??
The founder Charles Russell celebrated holidays. it’s when Rutherford gained leadership that all celebration of holidays stopped. I wish JW would research this fact!
Absolutely, thanks for the reminder. Once WT staff rewrote the Bible in 1950, the transformation to an isolationist cult was complete. Prior to that, it was a regular religion that had no problems with ANY holidays until Rutherford hijacked it.
They are that brain controlled that they think "god" will be watching them do it.

Lots of people earn everything they do yet we don't make lots of money that's not right people get rich to many are poor the world is evil

Hey Wally. Watchtower would never treat Serena Williams the same as the normal Jw. Goes to show once again the real ' entity ' that they worship.

@@drkaceyyeah but now her kids are millionaires as she insured they would be by following her dreams. So they will be able to maintain their activity in the org and follow their dreams. By following her dreams she made it possible for her children to do the same without needing to sacrifice their other interests since their essential needs have already been met.

I can’t figure out WHY Serena Williams wants to be a JW and raise her children in a way that she didn’t have to suffer. Let’s hope she doesn’t let them get baptized until, like her, they get to fulfill their dreams.
How did she get into it??
@@Katiegirlluv I believe she was (sort of) raised in it. More her mother than father. The father saw her and her sister’s potential in tennis and moved them along that path. I believe there is a movie called “King Richard” about it. Stars Will Smith playing the role of the Dad, Richard.

Not celebrating birthdays has nothing to do with pagan rituals. Somehow, that prohibits godly people from celebrating their own or their children's birthdays ... or are they no longer teaching that BS
Good point!

I was D/Fd for asking a simple question-Apostate they screamed
She's rich. She's exempt from disfellowshipping.
@@mandeelaw8410 that didn't stop MJ from being disfellowshipped!
@@oliviaswarden6077 it did stop him from caring...
@oliviaswarden6077 tell me one time you heard Micheal Jackson say publicly he regretted his actions that got him disfellowshipped?
@oliviaswarden6077 he was rich and he didn't care, exempt or not.
I remember standing for the PoA in elem/mid school, but I did not repeat the words or place my hand over my heart. I never got any flak from anyone, ever.
Totally agree with your analysis.
To me the most perplexing is a video I saw of those two as young children. Born male. What the what?
That’s what I heard too. They sure look like dudes.
No, they did not and do not look like men. You guys just love masculinizing black women.
@@reneesalvatori1996 The same is told about Michelle Obama. Those are rumours spread by racists who think black women have masculine features because they don’t fit the eurocentric beauty standards in North American society. Don’t fall for it and make a fool of yourself.

I had NO idea she is a witness! What the heck? I'm surprised her parents allowed her to become a tennis star.
@Katiegirlluv
Her Father molded and trained both her and Serena since very young teens in tennis. It’s very common knowledge. He did such a phenomenal job that a movie “king Richard” about him won Will Smith a “Best Male Actor “ Oscar. Google it. Correction : “ both her and Venus”
The williams are awesome people. if you can't see who they are and how god works through them, i pray you will soon
As an athiest, I never once stood for the pledge/flag at school, as a demonstration of free speech; this was in Texas. I never received disdain or grief from other students or teachers.
Just like Michael Jackson or Prince. The larger the checks the easier to get away with ...
You nailed it perfectly
