The Slim Pickings is the best EDC lockpick set hands down in my opinion! I carry it in my pocket not only for emergency situations (however unlikely those may be), but I also bust it out any time I feel like picking a lock at home and my other tools aren't easily within reach!
Hey Sandman & everyone else, the keysmart pocket clip works on this and it's fantastic. I'm incredibly surprised it doesn't come with it nor is it at least sold on the covert instruments website since they sell the nano scissors and other obscure keysmart knick knacks.
I bought the Riv-Pick and I tried it on the padlocks I usually open with the genesis pick. It works good. I put a little bit of oil to make it easier to open.
I'm fairly new to lock picking but so far I've gone with covert instruments because of some of the videos I've seen from McNally and I'm loving the tools so far. I'm a machinist by trade and there's stuff always feels quality to me
I also got the slim pickins. I really enjoy the riv, but I think the keysmart handle is way too much bulk for such a lovely tiny package. if you just set the turning tools on top of the pic and then set that next to the handle it's like triple the size.
After watching this I realized why I like the covert companion and dont care for the rivepick. And thats because I have to bypass locks at work throughout the week a lot of times just to get the job done and dont have time for single pin picking during the workday. I really like the “pistol grip” orientation for raking. But if I had to single pin pick the rivepick may not be as bad to use. To bad the rive pick wasn’t all hook in different thicknesses. Id definitely pull the hooks out of my companion and swap them for a rivepick that had a short hook in 0.20 & .025 and a medium hook in 0.20 & 0.25 with no rakes. That would actually be pretty darn sweet. 🤔Im moding my rivepick real soon.
I had such a good laugh at "My friends I am not rich, I am just irresponsible". I feel ya friend. In the last month I grabbed: Sparrows: LPL+BosnianBill's disk detainer pick (and a few locks from amazon) + master key kit & Lock Noob's Xmas sec pins and euro front loaders for fun challenge locks. Covert instruments: Ergo combs, Echelon, Abus 88 cutaway, Octo Patch and The Hand patch (also for my Echelon, it does look great on that tan case). I added my Southord strip rake, Toool 0.025 #1 & #7 picks and quint + quad rakes, ergo combs, Sparrows 0.020 city rake, by-pass knife and notched decoder, #1 turner set and Low + Medium 0.025 Monkey Paws for a full rapid entry EDC kit to supplement my nice SPP EDC case. The Echelon case fits so many tools but stays remarkably compact for me as well. Jimmy Long's full set of flat & round Hooks in 0.019 plus the Gem & Half Diamond 0.023/0.019 combo set. (Best $100 CDN I've spent in locksport for sure!) They chewed through all my A1100's with ease, and made good work with all my Abus, Commando, and Paclock 90a's & Pro's. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they handle the locks higher up my list as I progress dipping my feet in true hi sec locks. The 0.023 Half diamond strikes open Master's like it's charmed too. Thanks for keying me into his work and convincing me to grab them Sandman! I have the CC and agree it's a very nice compact by-pass EDC. It's great for showing by-pass techniques to friends in the field at their places and people new to lock sport. I did almost buy the Slim-Pickings during their sale but really wanted to Abus 88 cutaway. After seeing this I think I might give it a try...once my bank account recovers that is, lol! I think It was smart of them to release a pure picking SSF CC, and I'd like to see them now release a by-pass only CC as well. Once extra by-pass tools, turners, and Riv-pick are added it gets quite ungainly! Anyways thanks for the content and have a good one! May your locks always be challenging and your picks perfectly polished!
Sir-I would absolutely love to see you do a video using the many bypass tools in the covert companion that I purchased. Thanks in advance. Your videos are absolutely great and very informative.
New expansion kit for the Multipick OTW to me. I'm not rich, just more irresponsible! Plus more shiznit. Keep up the vids bro, they keep me informed. Wendt Lockmaster OTW, New SWICK picks also. JimyLongs also sent me his new 1/2 diamonds and gems in .019 and .023 Think he's sold out like everyone else after Christmas. Can't wait for your next re iews!
I'm sad that the rivpick has been out of stock every time I look at CI. Just got in to lock sport and found your vids they are amazing keep up the great work
Great video on all these Jackknives!!! I have the Multi Pick and it works great!! I have made a Riv Style that Rook Knight showed, actually made two of them and they work great!! Cost about 16.00 US . Uses South Ord pick pen replacement tips. May have to try the Riv pick when they are back in stock. I also made “ The Slinky stick” which is a minimal tool based in the same key keeper handle as the Covert Core Companion . Thanks for this great tool review!!! 🐈⬛🐾👍
Great review brother. I love the Riv pick and agree it feel just like one of the normal CI picks. Wish the hooks were just a tad thinner. A little tight in the 1100 key way but not a deal breaker.
I just ordered the Slim Pickings… seems pretty good for an intermediate picker like me. Really liked that it’s a stand alone pocket backup set and you don’t need to buy the Covert Companion.
@@sandman_locksport I’m just graduating from American 1100’s to PacLock 90A/Masterlock 410 (also on their way). Seems like it’ll be perfect for me to goof off with in my free time.
Lol I’m waiting for this little series to come to a close before I buy one, but I do really want to get a lock pick jackknife. I do really like the covert companion, but I don’t like that the lock picks don’t lock into place (riv pick aside) but I’m sure I can get over that! Anyway, awesome video as usual sandman can’t wait for the next one 👍
I could have sent you my swick for review purposes but has a collector I kinda know what the answer would have been. It is very firm and a bit hard to get out to use. It has a great story from Bosnian bill on the original maker.
Hey Sandman, I'm wondering if there is a good way to secure turning tool(s) on the riv-pick individually for EDC purposes, or if I have to get something bulkier/more expensive if i want my picks and turners all in one place? Thank you and love your videos
I have no idea what you’re referring to. I was able to put the Riv pic inside of my wallet, in the center fold, with a single turning tool. Outside of that, I think the Slim Pickings is the perfect size for a pocket pick set. I have it on my keychain as we speak. No issues with it so far.
I love folding/compact tool but don't expect the same results as a full set. Also the smaller the picks, the harder to use. I do find that small picked riveted together is better than using small picks single. My smallest is Camp-X. I think Sparrows model is a little took late into the game and too expensive compared to most of what is out there.
I honestly don’t know, but I don’t see why not, if you have extra spacers to expand the width of the tool similar to what is used in the covert companion. Because that’s essentially what it is. Just order extra spacers, and you’ll be able to put whatever you want in this tool. It’s essentially a slim down version of the covert companion, without all of the bypass tools.
The new riv pick has a different rivet that doesn’t feet tight. It’s completely loose. You need to add oil to yours or consider getting the newer version
@@sandman_locksport yeah Im gonna look into it I bought mines in January and I wonder when the new one came out, but after 3 tries it kept getting stuck and the solution I came up with was being it a little I noticed one of the side of the rivet was touching physically touching the pick more then other sides. Anyways thanks for the info.
@@sandman_locksport updated here and if anybody in the future had this issue. I grabbed one of the spare once’s i had and out of curiosity I added cooking oil to the rivet and it freed up……. That’s all it needed it went from locked up being able to move normal. Probably would use motor oil next time.
Hey quick question im pretty new to lockpicking and i bought a no name brand 20$ set with a bunch if picks and it flexes quite a bit, im planning on using those til they break, i was looking at southord picks and was wondering if its worth getting the MAX yield or just the standard picks they have or something totally different im all ears

"I am not rich, I'm irresponsible" Ha! Love it !!
I just got mine and I love it, I’m still learning how to single pin pick but I plan on moving to using the riv pick next
I received the slim pickings set as a Christmas present, and I couldn't recommend a more fun/practical product for the hobbyist.

Can other SSF picks from the covert companion be added to the slim pickings? For example, if I want to add the comb picks to this, is that possible?
