This feels so much like 2013 😆 My gripe with this dubstep-mashup stuff is that it feels very pieced together. As you pointed out, it seems like they just quickly fade between one mix and another. There’s bits and pieces of dubstep and electronic music in general that I think are fun, but I’ve yet to really find that one artist that synthesizes the two in a way that feels intentional and organic instead of two contrasting elements being smushed into the same box. Korn did something like this some years ago as I recall. Might have even been a Skrillex thing, if memory serves me? But I felt the same about that… there’s something there that works, but nobody’s quite put all the pieces together in a way that clicks for me. Northlane might be the ones to do it though. They’ve been delving pretty deep into infusing electronic and industrial sounds into their music. I feel like if they were to have Trent Reznor produce a record and come to him with that vision in mind of producing something of this nature, they’d find the secret sauce.

As per usual, you're talking absolute sense here in my view. I did quite like the Korn dabble into dubstep, and yeah I think that's the closest to great it's ever become.

@@SteveOGRock agreed. Although now I can't get this Reznor/Northlane collab idea out of my head. What a killer sound that would be!

I recently found out about your channel and I’m curious to hear more of your opinions and reviews on these dubstep tracks. Of course, if you intend on doing it, that is. I know you’re a all music rounder reviewer

Also, if you do want to explore the metal dubstep sound more, I highly recommend you check out Sullivan King… He does all his own vocals, metal screams, electric guitar, and has lots of different collaborations with other metal groups. Extremely talented guy. 🤓💀

Yes, I loved every element of this, and yet I echo the comments that those elements didn't quite work together. For me it needs that underlying theme / groove / melody to hold it all together and smooth out the transitions, but what do I know?! That's not going to stop me from giving it another listen. Nice subdued analysis Steve.

I need to dive into Northlane more after last Sunday. Loved the heaviness, low bass live. Love the vocals too 👍

100%. Their most recent album Obsidian is brilliant (you could even listen to it along with me as I did an album reaction/review of it here: th-cam.com/video/WqSDfYqLidw/w-d-xo.html). Also the previous one, Alien is fantastic. "Bloodline" which they played at the Apollo is one of my all time favourite songs. Great balanced song overall.

Another corker from Alien is "Talking Heads" which, if memory serves, is the song they closed their set with. It's an absolute beast.

Although far from the best song, the vocals have really got me coming back to it recently. I love dubstep and all it’s various sub-genres & styles, hell I make the stuff, but the drops here are honestly the weakest part of the track for me (as well as for others). They don’t add much because they’re pretty generic and one note, especially in context, I’d even say it aged a little despite not being very old. Did see a clip of it live and it seemed pretty cool though but in a more “casual” listening experience I’ll always focus on the vocal performance above anything else.
For some stuff kinda similar to this I’d check out the rest of this album, ‘PhaseOne - Transcendency’, as well as RIOT’s album ‘Dogma Resistance’ for its metal influences even if lighter than this song. Sullivan King could be a good one too but I’m not that big on his style, definitely closer to this song though. And Bossfight’s songs with Philip Strand as he also has a great voice. And some non-metal related tracks & artists, Virtual Riot is one of the most melodically talented while still being able to get heavy imo and MARUADA practically redefined the entire sub genre of Tearout and is now one of the major names in the industry for his heavy music.
Dubstep has come a long way from its brief time in the spotlight, in which it was still a genre label going through and entire large scale redefining and even before 2009-2014 (very rough timeline) it was trying to figure out what it was with no clear answer yet. It’s gotten a lot more organized and the average production value has shot WAY up, even if the use of “generic” and “boring” ideas has gone up as well.
Sry for the brief essay, guess I had more to say than I thought, but it’s always cool seeing someone try out the genre you love when they usually don’t listen to it so I kinda just kept typing. Anyways, have a good day and maybe you’ll find some new music to love

As a dubstep fan, the drop is my least favorite part of the track. The drops are impactful for sure, but they don't offer anything compositionally for me, and don't add anything to the great performance from northlane, which is powerful in its brutality and emotions. Just a bit disjointed, is all

I have made a remix of this song that takes it in a more orchestral and cinematic direction and made the synths in the drop out of heavily processing the vocal. I wouldn't have remixed it if I didn't love parts of it
