    How the crap that motor managed to continue running, maybe the current was so big that it basically ignored the dead shorted coil? Lol

    • @swrdghcnqstdr
      @swrdghcnqstdr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MasterPlay or a high enough internal resistance and a high enough current rating

    • @masterplay1201
      @masterplay1201 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      William Herron I was thinking, maybe it shorted out and became a huge single wire, and because the current was that high, the single wire was capable of generating a strong enough magnetic field to turn it

    • @swrdghcnqstdr
      @swrdghcnqstdr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MasterPlay if that happened, it would probably be over quicker. my guess is that it was actually functioning somewhat as intended. don’t think it could take that much power for very long though lol

    • @kilie1824
      @kilie1824 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MasterPlay it most likely actually worked as intended as William Herron pointed out, the sparks in the beginning probably were the electricity arcing from the brushes onto the commutator.

    It was before my time, but there was an accident with a motor rotor magnetizer. It used 2.5 large racks of capacitors (as in full height 19 inch equipment racks). The wire in the magnetizer windings was about a centimeter in diameter, and the dump was controlled by the other half rack, which used a thyratron tube based switching circuit. My understanding, is one of the magnetizing fixtures was not properly seated, and the smaller pins that configure the machine was not properly seated, causing it to dump too much energy for that particular fixture. It supposedly vaporized a portion of the fixture's winding, resulting in severe burns to the face and hands of the operator. The *orange* made me glad she hadn't _touched_ it!

    • @vincentrobinette1507
      @vincentrobinette1507 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They use a similar apparatus to magnetize speaker magnets as well. Similar to what's in the video, but it charges to 600 volts, similar capacitance. about 3 1/2 times the energy. The one I saw actually used a contactor similar to the one in this video. They kept blowing thyristors, and finally gave up, the contact worked quite well, considering the inductance of the coil gave the contactor time to make a good closure, before magnetic core saturation caused the current to spike.

    Great video! I feel like this is way too much power tho, the battery didn't even explode because the contacts fried instantly, i think if you nerfed this bad boy a bit you would obtain even cooler effects/explosions because the stuff you put in would have more time to heat up!

    First, you need to partner with slowmo guys and 2nd you need to do that with the navy’s railgun

    I highly, highly doubt you are anywhere close to a MA from that bank- even 500kA would be absolutely shocking.
    First off, you are using electrolytics, and even if we assume a 20 milliohm ESR (optimistic), ignoring the ESL (which limits the rise time) and the resistance of your connections, you have a theoretical maximum of about 320kA for the bank of 16 caps. In the real world it will be far less. The high ESL of the caps (and the setup... long bars, wires, etc) means your rise time will be very slow.
    In addition to that... those caps will be destroyed in short order. Pulling kiloamps through those poor caps (which are not energy discharge caps) will literally tear them apart internally. In reality I expect you're well below 100kA, especially considering the very high resistance of your load in most of these cases. Even if your load is a ridiculously low 20 milliohm, even with perfect caps with an ESR of zero (impossible), at 400V you are limited to 20kA.

    See if you can shrink a penny with this bank. Coil of copper wire around the penny. Check out another vid but it would be cool to try with this rig. You could also do smaller capacitors between the two leads. They make nice explosions when overloaded. AA battery. A Nokia phone.

    16 6S lithium polymer batteries in a series=355 volts. Capacitor value for bank, 48000 uF. formula for stored energy in a capacitor: E=.5CV2. 355 X 355=126,025 X .024=3024.6 joules of energy. That will supply .84 watts continuously for 1 hour. you're releasing that in milliseconds. That's a lot of power! With voltage that low, the impedance or resistance of whatever the load is, has to be pretty low, to drain off the capacitors quickly enough to take advantage of the available fault current of those capacitors. That, as you know, is quite high. That's why fruit doesn't explode the way you would like. The resistance is just too high. If you can draw an arc inside of something, that's what creates the high power, to create the expansion you want. More common for blowing up watermelons is much lower capacitance, but much higher voltage, at similar energy. That will discharge its energy into the high impedance load much more quickly. The best use for that capacitor bank is crushing aluminum cans inside a coil. It also works great for regaussing Alnico speaker magnets.

    A PCB is ALWAYS a nice thing to see take a lot of electricity.
