😂😂😂 Dude YES! It’s like you want to wear the sweater, but after this song and every time I had to stretch my arms out I thought...never again. Haha

Fantastic playing dude. I LOVE your syncopated flam accents on those high toms.
I've been working on this song all week to play this weekend and have been frustrated because I feel like I don't have enough limbs to play all the parts I'm hearing in the original MP3. I've watched about a half dozen covers, and have noticed every drummer is playing this song subtly differently, and including different little things I've heard. Makes me feel a bit better because it seems like everyone is not playing everything I hear going on in this song all at once. We are always our own worst critic, it seems. Groove on!

That's the beauty of music, man! No one person thinks or plays the same because we all have our own opinion/perception of what to play and when to play it. The key is just developing your own sound...what you believe feels and sounds best.
That's why I preach in my lesson videos, that I believe in being able to learn exactly what the drummer plays in the track. BUT...also be able to pick your spots in the music to be YOU and put your spin on it. Keep drumming, dude!

Your thoughts on moving to a more marchy snare rhythm in verse 3 and 4? I trying to think of ways to add some non tom groove to this. Its a fun tune but very low end tom heavy. I'm also trying to add the gospel 'stomp/clap' feel in the bridge too for some sonic variety

Hey man, great video! Curious as to what mic you use as your talkback and how you get it so that there isn’t so much drum bleed? I use one with an on/off switch but can’t keep it on while playing because of the bleed.

It’s just an SM57, so it helps a little bit since it is a very directional mic rather than your normal vocal mic. But there is still some drum bleed, no doubt. I wish I had one with an on and off foot switch. I used to use a vocal mic and turn it on and off, but that was just frustrating to have to do every time I have something to say during a song. The rest of the band just kind of dials the drums themselves down in the mix, so the talkback is providing some of the drum sound as well.

You can see I have it kind of aimed away from the drums too, to try and eliminate as much bleed as possible. It definitely makes a difference.

Is there a drum track playing in the background? I hear percussion sometimes in between your playing

Is the snare sound in verse 2 on a track?

    • @AlexWandless

Good ear! It is. If you watch the music video on TH-cam, you can see they have a percussion player as well as the drummer. He does those little snare roll notes on the second verse you are referencing.
