USTA 4.5 vs Ex ATP Pro! (w/handicap)

- This is a singles set between me and Clay Thompson and Clay's first time on the channel! Clay played at UCLA and then on the ATP tour and reached a high of 408. He was known for being loud and super exciting to watch. As a tall guy he played a big game and still does today, but I think it's more controlled and calmer than before. Nowadays he still plays a lot of tennis and trains with the purpose of improving. Today we played an 8-game pro set with me having a 30-Love lead each game. This is the best I've seen you play on the channel Winston. He wasn't holding back and you managed to stay in the rallies. Mad respect, your game is on another level, compared to 6 months ago.
I remember Bill Scanlon. Very nice pro player. NCAA singles champ in 1976 as well. Unfortunately he died in 2021. Shame. My belated condolences to Clay.
It took me the whole video to realize this was clay thompson because he was playing so chill. THE LEGEND. THIS IS THE GUY WHO HAS A WICKED INSANE MULLET AND SCREAMS LOUDLY. Damn Winston, this video really shows how much improvement you've had in the past few months!! All your ground strokes and serves are so much heavier and have more power, spin, and speed! At least compared to the older videos I watched a while back. Maybe its all that coaching from Karue!
Man, this guy has a great game. Really enjoyed this matchup. Winston, I know you are enjoying playing better people, but I think it would be great to see one match on occasion where you are the favorite. See where you are at mentally in that situation.
What about playing another 4.5? That’d be a good one.

@@MrBdiddypop MEP is a cool dude with a very effective game, but his visit to the Essential Tennis guys showed his style really doesn't work against anyone with a big enough attacking game. I think Winston would roll him pretty easily. Would be fun to watch tho!
Great content as always Winston. Clay's serve and forehand were incredible. Tough for you to match up with, but you really played well! Your backhand was SO solid. It is great to see you hitting that shot instead of running around it. You also put away some tough volleys when you came forward. Your improvement lately has been impressive. Keep it up!

Well ... that's probably the hardest serves we've seen in these videos of yours. Game 4 on interesting ... lol. I think some of those serves of Clay's were going to blow right through my screen.

So good of you, Winston, to take it easy on Clay in front of his wife and child. Seriously, though: good video. I thought you played really well given your opponent’s level. These videos are great, too, because they illustrate well the disparity between solid recreational players and the elite level, which serves as an important reminder to hacks like me who tend to fantasize after hitting the occasional “highlight reel” shot.

You guys are bringing back my memories (trauma) of junior USTA tennis. In the sectional tournaments I would always be up against a high seed or national level player! I wish as a young kid I had the presence of mind to just stay within myself and redirect! Winston did a great job nonetheless. Just reacting you see his shots are more in the middle and Clay was peppering all corners with good margin. Even at a slower pace if we used the angles to our advantage results would be even better. Hard to believe that when stuff’s coming at ya at blinding speed lol

Really appreciate you saying this Clay. When I played competitively, it was very difficult to get players higher than my skill level. So much of my improvement came from the few players who would take time to play practice sets. Often you when play someone less than your skill level, it gives a perfect opportunity to practice three crucial things - Mental toughness, staying aggressive/accurate with many off-pace shots being returned, and lastly, those crucial volley and overhead skills for finishing points with high consistency. There is benefit to mixing up skill level practice. Hope more people are open to it.

You may have lost the match and almost all the points played against Clay, but I still find impressive that you hang on in there against a former pro. You exchanged a lot of balls and made some really good rallies, that's impressive and shows how much improvement you had. And the points you got, all of them were well earned. You played with the right intention all the way throughout the match.

This guy has an unorthodox two handed backhand, short swing but it fits well on his type of game. Close to the baseline, using opponents strike force to generate his own... like hitting a wall... Interesting...
