The Case AGAINST using WASD

- Customising our setups to ensure high level performance is important! We customise so many things, but why not the keybinds? I often get a lot of questions on this so I thought I'd make a video on it. Let me know what you use and what you think!

they dont want you to know this but ddk plays cs with a controller
edit: bruh nvm i didnt even have to lie. using inverted mouse is literally weirder
i cant believe ive been taking this guys advice on aim training bro he legit aims BACKWARDS
LOL
@@FaZeturky LMAOOOO same
Wait until you see Quake pro Toxjqs settings..
Inverted mouse
Horizontal sens = slow
Vertical sense = fast
Mouse 1 = Move forward
Mouse 2 = Move backward
Z = move left
X = move right
C = shoot
Dudes considered one of the best aimers ever in Quake too.
Well with gyro the precision is actually pretty comparable.
As someone that plays fortnite I use WASQ, where you change the right movement from D to Q because you're never pressing both at the same time anyway. That leaves your index finger free at all times since you now only use 2 fingers for movement.
Oh nice. Love to see it.
I would argue that a WASD-like layout exists primarily to dedicate one finger to each sideways input for the purpose of strafing, so that you can change direction as quickly as possible. The same reason snaptap has blown up recently.
@@avacameron6283 Yeah, it's not suitable for games with very fast movement acceleration and tons of ADAD strafes, but for games like deadlock and fortnite it works quite well.
@@avacameron6283Fortnite is a unique game where 1. Strafing is not integral to the game compared to other fps 2. Having more fingers for different binds is EXTREMELY beneficial because of the building mechanic. This is why I use WASQ and believe it is the better movement bind for Fortnite. For other games, not so much.
OMG!!! Let's go
I've always shifted from WASD and people said I was crazy.
So good to see a video from you on this topic Dan!
When I used a normal keyboard I used RDFG too.
You are a smart individual thinker sir, not just taking the defaults without question!
@@ddkesports Thanks bro!👊🏽 Funny how this applies to a lot in life but that's a conversation for another day😂
love to see more content about non-wasd binds. I switched to UHJK when I picked up DOOM Eternal so I could quick switch faster and more efficiently and have since adapted all those binds to every game I play competitively.
at one point I switched to a split, columnar staggered keyboard which basically mandated me to switch to ESDF for shooters and allowed me to swap caps lock and ctrl on my keyboard AND gave me five total thumb keys. for ffxiv I cleared a (relatively easy) savage tier with my movement solely bound to forward and back on m4 and m5. quake player zy (of rocket jump ninja fame) did an excellent video on his binds which (in short) uses m2 for forward, ghj for left back right, f for jump. absolute wizard stuff imo
this explains some of the keybinds ive seen in your deadlock games, never thought to challenge the wasd default until now
To compliment this video, it'd be nice to have a deadlock binds video on your setup :D
I have used custom layouts and experiments for 20 years. I used ESDF variations for a good 10+ years. By the way, Tribes 2 had a default with ESDF movement keys.👌
(They also had Linux support for a 2001 game.)
Thanks for this I've been using esdf forever, but with crouch sliding I've still used c, which was awkward, I will try using z. I also use invert mouse. Just makes sense. Pull mouse, nose up. Push, nose down.
Ive been using this control scheme for 20 years for FPS, RPG, Etc. Games, always my preference.
S = Back
D = Left
F = Right
Mouse 2 = forward
Mouse 1 = Jump
Space = Shoot
Don't let anyone critique you for not using WASD.
Practice using the lower row keys with your thumb aswell, VBNM
This is big. Forgot to mention. Thanks!
Man does not only play inverted, he also records his videos upside down.
I still like the idea of an analog stick for movement, but I don't see how it could work in a tactical shooter with counter strafing... If we could figure that out, I'm sold
Analog stick on thumb would free up ASD. One of those would need to be jump. But the other 2 can be whatever depending on the game, including Left and Right. Would be easy but would also for wild stuff.
i started using yghj for movement after i broke the spacebar on a keyboard a while baack and have stuck with it since, it allows more buttons for your thumb to press instead of only using it for space and you have loads of buttons on the left side for your pinky and ring finger to press
Seems like I forgot to press send on a comment I made.
But I wonder if you've heard of a Keyboard called the Charachorder. I'd love to hear your opinion on it.
Just like you with going extreme on inverted mouse. I've actually switched entirely to the Charachorder for daily use and recently committed to using it for gaming. It's been a very fun and interesting journey so far.
Oh, this is really cool. I need to investigate further! I'll check out some videos. How long did it take to get used to?
@@ddkesports When I started using it, it took me about 2-3 weeks to get used to it. It's been my main keyboard for video editing since then cause I don't have to move my hands around. However, I only fully switched to it about a month ago.
Using it for Valorant took me about 2 weeks to get used to, and that's cause I don't play as often anymore.
Long story short, 2-3 weeks depending on how much time you put into it.
i use UHJK ... my thumb rest on ALT and have easy access to SPACE an FN key(rebinded).... and my pink rest on V, i have the keyboard a little tilted so my pinky can access F,G,C,B,SPACE without moving my others fingers from the directional keys...shiffting so far to the right clean up space for my mouse movement since my sens its on the lower side
I know old quake player used asdf to gain more keys access. Never tried it myself though.
Been meaning to switch to ESDF for a long time, but haven't done it. Maybe now is the time...
Quakers often laugh at other quakers who still switch weapons with the scrollwheel. Some strong players like Spart1e and dem0n still do this, or did for a long long time. But a good thing about it is they don't run into any of these issues with dodging patterns being interupted to swap weapons. Scrolling to switch weapons GOAT?
Also, what's your take on not shooting and zooming with mouse buttons but on keyboard? Does it potentially give increased accuracy due to a more consistent mouse pressure? If I wasn't old I would try it myself but now if I change anything in my setup it takes a month to get used to it.
the idea makes sense, the question is if you can get used to it just like changing sense. and how long does it take?
RDFG brothers rise up
I've used UHJK for over 2 years. Best decision ever.
I use uhjk so I have access to alt (which is next to space on my kb). Usually I bind that alt key to fire, so I don't need to hold down m1 when tracking. Only in tac shooters or casual games I have m1 as fire. Movement keys are bound to mouse keys so in deadlock i have m2=jump, m1=dash m4=crouch. In quake it's m2=jump m1=crouch for crouchslide. Honestly I think the spacebar is the biggest waste of kb real estate.
True. Thanks for sharing!
I've always used capslock like others use shift with my pinky. tab is also really easy to hit. this is because i play further choked up on the board and i hit control with the pad of muscle under my pinky that is part of my palm
wth, i had an epiphany about this kinda idea 1-2 days ago and dismissed it, thinking there's no way. in u come with a video a day later!?
Literally was messing around on my crummy work keyboard while I was bored this week and thinking the same think.
Didnt do a damn thing bout it when I got home but thats just how it goes ya know
i tried ESDF 1 time and that wasnt horrible, but after i that i started Tilting my keyboard past 60 degrees. Now my thumb (ive kinda got big hands) can reach P whilst my other fingers can still hold W A and Shift. Pinky now pretty much rests naturally on CTRL and Shift
MMO players have this issue as-well. You could consider using a gamepad like the razer tartarus for better ergonomics.
Your answer won't get any traction but its easily the best. The traditional keyboard just sucks on so many levels. For example both thumbs only being used for one big key. Something like keywells will also make keys a lot more reachable.
People google this one thing: "cosmos custom keyboard" and try the beta. Yes that is out there.
ill think about it
lol every time I watch you I come back to competitive gaming
WAIT WAIT WAIT! Did I just hear inverted mouse at the end?😂
Haha ye
All the games earlier enough were inverted Y by default so, it's why I've stuck with it.
I use TYUH for movement. Slide is F. Jump is ALT. Dive is spacebar. I play Warzone
Lfg
hawk TYUH
@@Inressa 😂😂
I use WA SPACE D hehe, SPACE for moving backwards, this way you can have thumb on the space bar so you can have fingers on every movement key at the same time, i find it useful in quake for dodging backwards and forwards etc... maybe i should swap to ESSPACEF though xD
Makes complete sense, yet it's too late for my brain to make the switch.
I use wasd. what are good binds for guns for wasd in quake. 6-0 can be hard to press
Can be whatever. Q for Rocket, E for Rail, F for LG, M4 for GL.
Just find what you like
I move all weapon keys on to my mouse so i can switch weapons with full control of movement.
ESDF chads stay winning
Let's go
Me switching to an Azeron, then this video popping in my feed lol
My pinky and ring are so fucking stiff that I cant really use them for anything other than the closest 2 keys anyways without having to move my entire hand, so switching to ESDF etc wont be helpful to me.
Early on in my PC gaming "career" I was thinking about switching but never did. I do believe alot of people will se an advantage to using ESDF or RDFG in ability games like Deadlock, mobas or mmorpgs
i think wasd actually came from a a quake player named thresh
Tox had the best setup, you know this. Takes a while to get used to though
Ye I do think firing on keyboard is pretty compelling especially and I don't know of anyone else who has done this in modern times at least.
@@ddkesports I jump with Mouse 1 and shoot with space. People think I'm an alien when I tell em this lul
I thought wasd was popularized by Thresh in the Quake days; not half-life
Yeah that's correct. But the first major game to use as default controls to my knowledge was Half-Life.
maybe just bind useful things to caps lock and tab?
I copied my friend growing up playing cs 1.5/1.6 and have used left alt for crouching for 20+ years
RAGE
i use werd idk lol
This is all childs play compared to designating keybinds for Tarkov...
