Dad was in the Pacific in WW2 but he did "manage" to make it to the Korean War and Vietnam - all front line action. Like this fine gentleman he spoke with a quiet voice, never went to the VFW's either. I love how this Vet tells it just like what they were doing was just another days work. Of course it really wasn't, and we are here today because of brave men like him. Respect Sir!

@@bobcruse624 Im not so sure about that. We were on our own turf then. World War 2 we were 5-6000 miles from home. Tough cats either way you look at it.
52 nations versus 1. Knightly victors surely. The Germans would run out of ammo and gas constantly. Of course Britain and France declared war on the Germans for the 'crime' of saving a huge portion of their country (East Prussia). They constantly fought against insurmountable odds - and kept fighting bravely to the bitter end. You're not 'great' if you beat up an old lady (although there are large swaths of our population who do just that, but no one does a thing about it). I guess the odds aren't placed well enough.
Just to play devil's advo here but they got drafted and had to do it, didn't they? We'd do the same, wouldn't we? We are complete subjects of our gov, aren't we? Also, they voted in Democrats for 5 straight terms and their lib philos, didn't they? That always makes gov bigger and more oppressive, doesn't it? We are about to see more and worse of the liberal same, aren't we?

These young men were so young truly brave, my uncle was only 20 when he died in WWll. I respect and admire all out vets.
I was named after Audie Murphy,,my uncle did actually serve with him and was within 50 yds of him in the battle when he took the tank depicted in the movie To Hell and Back. My uncle said there was snow on the ground

My Uncle Erwin (Erk) Stark from La Crosse Wis served With Audie Murphy and would send Erk Train tickets to Hollywood for 3 to 4 week visits every 2 to 3 yearsTill Audie died
Grown up 8 to 10 years old Audie was do n his movies I fell in love with him he was so handsome (lol) after I had become a adult I found out what a hero he really was TNT in a small quite package how he joined the service how his mama was so proud of him

My grandfather fought in both world wars.
He was born in 1897 and passed in 2003, he was 105.

Every now and then, he gets this expression in his eyes and you can see he's back there in his mind. I can remember the same look when my Dad would talk about the war.

My paternal grandmothers maiden name is Murphy.they came from Farmersville and Culleoke area of Texas.I am a cousin of Audie .

Respect, sir for your WW2 service. Audie served in the 3rd infantry and was attached to the 36th Texas infantry division. So did my dad in the 36th, up through Italy, invasion of southern France and crossed into Germany throught Seifired line, in the Vosage mts and black forest. Dad was battlefield severlly wounded by mortar shrapnel with spinal back injury, survived but left him in a wheelchair at the age of 21 for the rest of his life. Life long vet hospital patient, member of Disabled American Vets and Paralized Vets of Aamerica. dad eventually died of complications off his WW2 wounds in 1970. He is missed by his family to this day. BTW- A great Marlon Brando film, 'THE MEN' had this group of recovered paralized vets in it at their recovery hospital in Calif. Many of the vets were in this film and background performers.
The visages mtn.and black forrest battles along the Siegfried line was under General Patches us 7th army.Underated because of the 9th and 1st armies struggles up north in holland and belgium.The 7th army had high casualties.Very bitter fighting occured moving up along the Rone river valley area toward and in2 the vosages (french side of rhine;black forrest german side of rhine)and black forrest separated by the infamous Siegfried line;very bitter fighting along the french german border.Quite a few waffen ss troops fighting there.The 36th had a battalion @ st die trapped 4 days.A desperate struggle ensued till battalion was saved.The 442nd(japanese americans took high casualties in the vosages campaign after heavy fighting in italy.).Think it was the 442nd?Correct me if I'm wrong!But it was a japanese american battalion.
I new a ww2 vet w the 100th inf.div.usa in that area and sed it was horrible desperate fighting of the germans.The us 7th army saw sum if the worse fighting of the war.The 45th,3rd,28th,63rd,100th,70th,42nd,36th,44th,95th,101st later in spring 45,103rd were in 4 sum tuff fighting in the vosges and black forrest areas.Battle deaths were high on both sides.A book by shelby Stanton titled order of battle usa army lists usa div.in battle pacific and europe and the casualties were astronomically high in europe than in pacific;not to take away from the pacific war which was brutal 2,especially the phillipines,newguinea,solomns,saipan,pelelieu,okinawa,and eventually japan but the atomic bomb stop a blood letting in invading the japanese homeland.

@@brokenspokes3739 I think Clint Eastwood in Kelly's heroes, wore the patch of the 35th(sante fe div. a national guard unit)inf.div. that became federalized in 1942.35th fought in the bitter struggle of the hedgerows in normandy 6-8/44.It later was in the battle of mortain w the 30th and 1st us inf.div.s in normandy.It was then put under Patton's 3rd army and partook in the battle of the bulge.35th fought in alsace france and saw lots of action in ww2 france and germany.

I believe all generations can rise to greatness. Study some of the fighting done in Korea, the Chosin Reservoir, look at Vietnam, Khe Sahn, many other battles, and the Gulf wars. These are all places where men went far beyond the normal, who were heroes in every sense of the word.

Glad my father, who served in the Army Corps of Engineers, isn't here to see what is happening today.
My dad was a P51D fighter pilot escorting bombers from Iwo Jima, and yes he died a while ago but he would be enraged. He became a fire fighter in Detroit and was there during the riots. I was in Chicago 67-68 for the riots. Anger does not tell the half of it. Pray.

I marvel at his memory, I can hardly remember shit about Vietnam. I was in the marine corps, a grunt, and saw a lot of action but thank God without something to jog my memory it's all gone.

My father fought in the same engagements as Major Murphy. He seldom talked about the war but when we was watching the movie "To Hell and Back' my dad jumped up and said he fought for the beach house murphy fought for.

I like AUDIE MURPHY. Everytime one of his movies came on I couldn't get over this baby faced short guy was the most decorated soldier in ww2.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Those woman's that will always be remembered in our lives they served and protect this country putting their lives on the line and I as a Vietnam vet thank them all.

Salute! I had the honor of visiting Murphy's memorial where his plane crashed on the Appalachian Trail last year and hope to revisit again this year.
This man and the other soldiers, which my great uncles were, have my undying respect.

We moved into our house in Dec. 1987. Someone who served in WWII in Europe lived here back in the 1950's. I found a German device hidden in the basement that turned out to be a Mutter Kompass used in the navigation system in a WWII German bomber brought home by a soldier.
As infantry man who spent his time over seas on the front line, thank you for your hard work and your service.

This fellow reminds me of my dad. I am 63 years old and I remember him telling me the funny stories about the war. He would have his friends over for poker night , most veterans and the stories got a little more gruesome after whiskey and beer and me hiding in the next room at 7or8 never heard the bad stories but new the men who lived them. Auddie Murphy visted Woody Blanton are sherriff in Grayson county Tx. They served together during the war Auddie was from Tyler Tx. Right up the road on hwy 69. I never forgot how strong and kind those men could be.

Glad he survived combat to tell his story. I know there are many things that haunt him from combat that he doesn't want to remember about. The stuff the he saw and the smell is really horrible that he will keep in the back of his mind forever that can't be told or described.
Audie Murphy was a great hero and warrior. Man times have changed so much." Mr. Lincoln I wish you were here" Things have changed alot in a 100 years " " Things aren't working out just like you planned" "Mr. Lincoln we sure could use a hand."

Both my grandfathers served in WWII. One was a 82nd Airborne Paratrooper the other was a MP under Patton in the 3rd Army. If alive today they'd be very pissed to see this country when most their friends died preserving it.
My Great Uncle Wayne was in the Airborne also. He jumped behind enemy lines in Normandy. I think he jumped out of a glider, if I recall correctly. His son was a Marine in Beirut when they bombed the barracks. I believe some of the AA were the first to reach some of the concentration camps. God bless them,I don't think I could deal with that image of horror.
Thank you for your service. I was also a part of the 3rd Infantry Division...from 1973-1976. No combat, just war games, still there’s a little pride from being part of such a distinguished, decorated unit.

@@garypic4083 That’s great to hear. We trained along with an Armored unit a lot while I was there. I was a medic and was covering the firing range for the M60 tanks one day. I’d never heard tanks fire before and when they started, the concussion rocked the vehicle we were in . I hope your brother is doing doing well.

God I love these guys. I had so many in my family. I was honored to be raised by this generation So many family reunions and so many combat veterans, POWs, and just plain Dog Faces who went through all this and very rarely spoke about it.
I love how casual and matter of fact he is.
The guy survives combat against the Germans, only to get crabs at the end of the war! I love how he’s just “Yeah. We got crabs all over us.” Like he’s telling you what he had for breakfast that morning! This guy is great.

I'm 70 and what I know of WWIII was from sitting around the kitchen table drinking Famous Grouse with my dad, my uncles and their friends in the early 70s.
I wish I had recorded those stores.

Thank you sir for service that allows me to have the freedoms of today as well as the other U.S.A. Military personnel that have fought and preserved our way of life. My Father served in Korea war in combat but he only spoke briefly to my brother and I about his military service other than saying that he made up his mind going over on the ship he was going to do his job the best of his ability so he could come home. My father said two things on how brutal it was and the children who suffered! Short statement that my Dad’s eyes got glassed!
My father served in Korea and Vietnam. He had issues due to his time in war. I have other family members who served too... Vietnam era and peace between Vietnam and the middle east.

My Dad was in the army during WW11. He was a demolition expert. He armed and disarmed bombs. As a child I didn't know how dangerous that was.
my dad would never talk about ww11 I think about it a lot but I don't think I ever ask him about. I just remember one think he said they came across this small creek and they all drank and filled there canteens .they walk up the stream and there wad a dead German and a mule all rotten in the water .he never said if they got sick or not
I'm a boomer. I regret not asking the WWII vets about their experience.
Back then we were told not to ask. It was too horrendous for them to recall.
One Christmas my uncle's father told everyone about his friend in the armored car in front of him who was blown up in Crete or Italy. He felt lucky but also confused it wasn't him. We wanted to hear more, we knew the stories would be lost, but it hurt him. So it was exactly as you say.
SPENT AN AFTERNOON AT ARLINGTON ....WENT TO SEE AUDIE S GRAVE....SAT DOWN AND HAD LUNCH WITH MY FAVORITE ACTOR AND REAL WAR HERO....I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT SUNNY AFTERNOON...

My father was with the 10th field artillary 3d infantry, He fought with them through North Africa, Sicily, and Italy, James Arness was also with the 3rd.
what he said about Murphy?
Arness would often 'grin and bear it' while walking with a limp while filming of countless Gunsmoke scenes.

It makes me miss my Dad so much, being the youngest in my family I used to ask my Dad endless questions about his WWII experiences, be would tell me stories, I would hang on every word with more endless questions.
After he passed away I was told that I was the only one to ask him of his time in the War, and it was the only time he ever talked about it.. Truly the Greatest Generation... Miss you Dad.
You can picture in your mind the journey , never to be forgotten by those who listen
My father was in the same company as Audie Murphy. My dad was in the unit from basic training at Camp Roberts, CA to advanced infantry training, to Africa fighting Romnel. Audie was a replacement while they were in Africa. I found a copy of the orders for the Combat Infantryman’s badge. My fathers name is on the orders along with SSG Audie Murphy. My dad saw all the action and was only wounded once in France from a mortar. He went to a combat hospital then back to the unit. His last assignment was guarding Himmler’s house
My father was a couple of companies over from Audie. Served from Africa to Germany.
What company? My Dad was in K CO.. Of the 15th. Same Path too.👍

I have a hard time remembering things. Its like patches of memory are gone.
Earl,funny thing is I remember the names of those crew mates that died but very few of those that survived! I can remember the face of those that worked the mess hall but not the face of those that crewed other planes that I ate with. Maybe some things we don’t think is important enough to remember.

Last unit I was in after 7th inf, 24th inf, 75th regiment, 3rd id last 3 years before I got out! He was a legend!
