    SCP-2399 - A Malfunctioning Destroyer : Object Class - Keter : Indestructible SCP
    Item #: SCP-2399
    Object Class: Keter
    Special Containment Procedures: Due to SCP-2399's location and nature, physical means of containment are currently impossible. Implanted Foundation agents in major observatories are to contain footage or images of SCP-2399. An ongoing misinformation campaign is in effect, which has thus far been able to completely suppress any knowledge pertaining to SCP-2399 from public awareness.
    Foundation satellites in orbit around Jupiter are to maintain constant vigilance of SCP-2399's reconstruction efforts, and make all attempts to hinder that process should SCP-2399 reach a minimum of 75% completion. Additionally, a perimeter of long-range electromagnetic jamming satellites (BARRIER Array) has been situated in high-Jupiter orbit. Any transmissions intercepted by this array are to be summarily decoded and logged.

    This is one of my favourite pieces of cosmic horror, definitely the best I’ve seen from SCP. Unstoppable, beyond our comprehension, and prevented by luck, and desperate humans trying to stop it, with the most primitive of technologies.

    Why hasn't Jupiter itself become an SCP? This planet is arguably responsible for the continued existence of life on Earth in more ways than just this.

    Did you know, research suggests that the red spot on Jupiter is shrink and may not be there in 40-300 years? In 2004 the diameter of the spot was only half the diameter it was in the early 1700s and is believed to turn from oval to circular by 2040 but predictions beyond that are mixed.

    PLOT TWIST: The aliens are counting "Planet #3" from the outside in rather than the inside out. In 25 years the ship escapes from Jupiter's atmosphere, travels to Saturn, destroys a different alien installation that we never even knew about, and then leaves without further incident.

  • @anon5252
    @anon5252 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I enjoyed this story, but what really broke the immersion for me was the description of what was seen through a "looking glass" in 1665. We can't even see solar system objects with that amount of clarity in real time with modern telescopes, let alone the earliest telescopes. Additionally, only Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn were known about in 1665. Neptune wasn't discovered until the 1780s, for example. I enjoyed the rest of it though.

  • @tessa8484
    @tessa8484 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I always thought it was interesting that we and they in the story just assumed it was coming with bad intentions. Yes it did unload on Jupiter but only after "colliding" with a moon which it could have detected as being under attack. The messages said nothing about destroying Earth or the civilization, merely to proceed there. I wonder if that was part of the intent of the story to show us that because something is dangerous we assume it comes with ill intent.

    • @SantiFiore
      @SantiFiore 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I once read the following: "We share almost 99% of our DNA with our closest relatives, the chimpanzee. If a 1% gap means such a difference in the cognitive capabilities each species has, what would mean another 1% in the right direction?"
      We, able to reason and produce abstract thoughts have an inmeasurable advantage against other species. A chimp can´t tell we kept him in a reserve to protect his species, nor we conduct reasarch nor how and why we feed him, and will go psycho and try to kill us if we grab what he perceives as his belongings, despite knowing his feeder for years.
      Well, apply the same logic between humans and something with superior cognitive capacity as humans. It would make things we could never understand, as we couldn´t find the logic to discover them. We could be treated as pets or test subjects without even suspecting it. We could have the most positive interactions with this entity and never tell its true intentions, just as you feed a stray cat over the weeks to let the kitten relax and learn to not fear you, until it likes you and asks for pets.
      The only way of dealing with another sentient organism we can´t be sure of what is capable of is striking first. A wild, enraged chimp is certainly capable or charging anybody and killing it without effort, yet if you put a bullet on his brain it will not. If this sentient species gets to use its superior weaponry over humanity we are subject to this species´ will.

    I'm curious why Cassini would refer to the outer planets in the plural sense since his observations in this entry take place in 1665 and at that point Saturn was the only known planet beyond Jupiter (Uranus wasn't discovered until 1781 and Neptune wasn't recognized as a planet until 1846.), so at that point there was no separation of the solar system into inner and outer planets.

    If they can decipher the alien transmissions that it gets it's orders from, they should be able to transmit new orders to it. Tell it to self destruct or completely shut itself down and then tell it to stop listening to any new orders, as they may be attempts from the target civilization to trick it. Better yet, tell it to finish repairs and return to it's point of origin and destroy that place, ignoring all new orders on it's way there. We can't crush it, but maybe we can outsmart it.

      Perhaps some ultra-advanced alien race sent it to our solar system to protect earth from the hateful star? Maybe this intergalactic species has made it their societies goal to protect/preserve what little sapient life is in the universe.
      I personally believe in this theory, I don't see why else something would send such an unnecessarily over-powered weapon to destroy a species that hasn't even reached the space age yet. I can honestly believe an advanced alien race would wan't to defend sapient life wherever it grows, since it may be an extremely rare occurrence in the universe.

    Okay so the ship was damaged by the moon Io, right? So then why not follow that line of logic and build rockets on one side of Io, move it into position, and then fire all thrusters and push the moon toward the ship. Combined with the force of the thrusters and the gravity of Jupiter, the moon crushes the ship and that's that for a while.

I solely to add some more dynamic motion to the videos, or is supposed to be a cigarette or cigar in an ashtray just out of the camera's view? I feel like the Foundation wouldn't allow smoking in most of the facilities. And if it's coming from the projector itself, wouldn't the Foundation get a new one? Or repair the current one?
