I have always enjoyed Queens music, and I think that when they sing, their voices blend well together, they compliment each other. Freddie had an awesome, powerful voice and no matter what he sang or how he sang it, he sounded great! To me, using pitch corrector or autotune to perfect a voice, it only takes away the feelings and emotions of the singer natural voice. I'd rather hear songs with their natural voice, flaws and all. Thank you, Fil for another great analysis and congratulations on hitting 285K subscribers! Rock!
That’s true, but you have to actively search for Mercury’s raw, live vocals. Most people have simply never heard those vocals. The official releases of their live concerts are how a majority of the fans (and listeners in general) hear them and virtually every song has _multiple_ corrections, analogue and digital, that alter the music they actually played. Chienwonder2’s channel has spent months making videos in painstakingly detail of how official releases have used different tools to remove mistakes, wrong notes or vocal problems. Check this 55-minute analysis of all the differences between the releases of the popular Montreal concert: th-cam.com/video/oHXaQrWUhec/w-d-xo.html Look at how many reaction videos there are of “Somebody to Love” in its HD restoration. It’s flawless! But that’s simply not the music the audience heard live at those concerts. Like all bands and vocalists, there are many mistakes. Not just in the vocals, but in the playing, too. And that is what people think of when they say that they sounded perfect live. Most people have no clue that there are thousands of alterations throughout the live concert albums and videos. If would rather hear Queen raw and natural, videos like Chienwonder2’s demonstrate how much time and effort that would take. I bet that most of the singing you praise as perfect has been corrected to sound that way.
The fact is that in his live performances, his voice would be noticeably off pitch; he’d sing the wrong note; his voice would crack and strain; he would make mistakes on the piano. All the musicians would make mistakes live in every song. _They did not want you to hear them._ And that’s all there is to it. And this is norm, it has always been the norm.

Yes, I feel old. I remember Bohemian Rhapsody, from 1975. Great song. Queen are like a cross between The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. I never knew how pervasive auto tuning was in music until I found your channel. What a bizarre thing to consider doing to Freddie Mercury when he sounds like this already. But this is the problem today, a lot of people don't really care, it seems. It is similar to the over-photoshopping in photography now, people will go nuts over a "photo" that someone says they took, which is obviously fake, but people don't care or even seem to know sometimes. They'll just say "Wow, that's amazing that you got that sunset shot with both a rainbow and a lightning bolt in it! How cool!" And it changes people's expectations for what they see, in the way that autotune has changed people's expectations for what they hear, so it becomes harder and harder not to do that. Unfortunately, I think we have become so used to consuming manufactured media that we have lost our appreciation for what is real. As always, thanks for the great analysis, Fil!

Love all the little details that you point out that we can over look at times when we get caught up into the song or performance. I've said this before if the music industry gave us a choice and labeled it as the "original recording as recorded" or this has been "auto-tune and or pitch corrected". then we the buyer can decide which format we prefer to own. just like back in the late 1950's and 60's we had a choice between mono recording or stereo recording. What a treat Fil to hear Freddie Mercury's voice...his natural voice. He was such and amazing singer song written who entertain like no one else. When he goes into chest voice you can really hear his anguish. Auto tune will just destroy that. Queen was the first band I really paid attention to. I don't know how many times I listened to thier greatest hits on cassette. I even had dances for most of the songs. You did an awesome job at explaining why his voice was doing what it was doing. It's so sad that Freddie Mercury is gone... don't mess with a legend.
The extreme detail by focus on short segments of vocals was perfect for this analysis. Clear demo w/PM of the vocal expression that pitch correction would remove. (With this full length analysis, you cleared the last hurdle in your channel return!) 👍
Thank you Fil for all you ‘ hear ‘ and show us. Love your comment …’ it sounds sharp but it doesn’t sound wrong ‘. You look like you feel better ✌🏼 ROCK !
I never heard Freddie Mercury's voice so isolated before...He could have walked and chewed gum at the same time and still sound absolutely amazing. Enjoyed this analysis on Freddie and agree as others have said how by listening to you helps enhance the understanding and appreciation for him. Fil you have such a way of pointing out all the subtleties and variations of a singer. I love this channel and I love learning more and more about music and all it encompasses. !!!
Great analysis. I believe from the early days up to and including the Innuendo album, Freddie would only record his final vocal once everything else had been put down and roughly mixed. He would then do 3 takes of the lead vocal and either use the best take or piece together the best of each. A great example is his solo track 'In My Defence', Dave Clark states that the entire vocal is the very first take as he couldnt better it. You can hear his voice fatigue during the 2nd chorus and he then pulls it back for the final chorus after he's been able to rest for 30secs during the guitar solo. Brilliant!
I've known this song was a masterpiece ever since I was a kid in the 70s, but your analysis makes me think more about Freddie's voice and how amazing it was. TBH I wish today's producers/engineers would leave well enough alone. A voice like Freddie's doesn't need pitch correction!
Fascinating! Thanks Fil. I love how respectful you are of the great singers and your love of vocals shines through. What a terrible shame that these people think they can improve a voice like Freddy! Shame on them. Happy Christmas.
Great analysis, as usual! Yes! He is purposefully choosing slightly sharp/flat notes to convey the different feelings of despair (almost like a keening quality) and alternatively the angry defiant tone. I remember a news article a while ago that described a university led study on why his vocals were so great. 🖤
A great video to lock onto when I'm bored and decide to adopt an attitude of being on a treasure hunt to love the beautiful music Freddie Mercury made. Found! And deep gratitude for the man's work just as it is!
Wow, Fil, all this time, I thought the very beginning was all the band. And my sister used to 'lay tracks', of herself whenever she had control of the studio, all the time. That was in the 90s. This, as usual, was great. 👍💙🥰✌
terrific analysis as always! Would love to hear your thoughts on either George Michael singing 'The Long And Winding Road' in 1999 or Queen performing 'We Are The Champions' live or At Wembley Stadium, Saturday 12 July 1986 as I believe that performance really captures the brilliance and flamboyance of both Freddie and the band as a whole
Fantastic, Fil. As always. Thank you. I’m excited to show this to my 17-yr old that just started voice lessons. I am the biggest Queen fan ever. But it irritates me to no end when people use hyperbole for Freddie. His voice wasn’t perfect (and his vocal range wasn’t any wider than a dozen other rock singers). His performances as a whole were perfect. Exaggerating takes away from how good he naturally was. Once you exaggerate by saying something easily disproven (with your pitch graphics) you’ve now cast doubt on any other praise given. Freddie was amazing. Not perfect, amazing. A real voice that, with its passion and flaws, is better than a large percentage of the population. That’s what draws your ear to it.
An interesting and entertaining look at Freddie's voice. I wonder whether any record company has used a 100% synthetic voice on a released song. It would not surprise me in the least as they would not have to pay anything to the artist including royalties, they could keep the lot. As I've said before, humans are not perfect and we don't need to be fed autotune or corrected pitch songs. Thanks Fil, and have a wonderful Christmas, you've earned it.
Good video. How about pitch coreecring Freddie's vocals on this song to contrast them to the original. Perhaps a producer could come on and explain why they need to correct Freddy's vocals?
Always love these vocal analysis posts Fil; great stuff. I downloaded the free VocalPitch-Monitor just for fun. Wow, it is great fun!🤟 Turns out I can hold a lowish E2 and a highish D5; who knew! Everything else in between is a complete tonal car crash, but hey - I can at least hold two notes!🤟😁🤟 It’s great to be able to see where the vocalist (in this case Freddie) is singing and then trying to match it. It really surprised me, you can actually see how bad/good you are… and SEE how you can IMPROVE. What a great Christmas ‘thing’ to try out with your mates and family🎄. I’ll have the app open for every analysis video Fil, and I’ll be singing (screeching…😆) along trying to get close. My neighbours probably think I’m a nutter for sure now… Glad you are on the mend and, Merry Christmas Fil!🎄🎅🎄
I guess the biggest question is ‘Why?’ Why mess with songs that reached the heart for years? That’s rhetorical … no answer will satisfy a true music lover…. 🧐
I am not crazy about the auto correct. I rather the natural voice & I always loved Freddy's voice he sang anything & everything fantastic . Great analysis as always Fil👍
Hello.Fil..so good.! Freddy's voice so specific texture, do not Leave indifférent.! ..Fil.!another nice musical moment. For me, English Magic still at work.! Take care.and kisses.🎸💌🗝️
So glad to be 14 in 1975. BR was #1 for what seemed like a long time! Not the first time saying this, I am glad we had just Vinyl. I recall having a bit of a debate at a Band rehearsal years ago, between Head voice and Falsetto. They are in fact different as you say.
I bought this album in 1975 or 76. My wife and i thought Bohemian Rhapsody was absolutely fantastic. We played it for some of our adult family members and they thought we were nuts! Well about ten years later on SNL when they did the skit it became "popular" to the masses. So we were ahead of the curve!
With regards to the gap between Feddie’s falsetto and head voice - check out the isolated vocal for Under Pressure, where Mercury does an extremely impressive ‘slide up’ right through (what I believe is) head voice and falsetto. I’m sure you know where I mean, right after ’slashed and torn’ but before the heavier, rockier ‘Why can’t we give love’ section.
I don't know why I don't like to hear a voice auto tuned or pitch corrected but I do love certain Remastered songs. For example the Beatles remastered songs sound as if the instruments are being brought forth but the vocals are still in tact ( their original way ) Is it a matter of who is doing the remastering and the quality of the equipment ?It could also be that I am listening. on a better sound system than a scratchy record like back in the day There are so many factors .Could you do an Analysis of this perhaps at some point? Thanks Fil ...Rock 🎼🎸
H i Fil i hope his fans real fans tell the managers and producers to stop messing with his vocals im a member of the karen carpenters fan club and we told Richard to stop changing her voice he listened thankgod like i say some people like the p noises and the way he makes his vocals change we can see him sing i can anyway listening to Queen for 40 odd years i can here the harmony changes in my ears the pitch ,leave things what dont need to be changed ,,,great vlog as usual x
Thanks Fil for another great analysis video! It was very interesting to learn the differences between both vocals using the pitch monitor. Of course I prefer the 1975 version .
What made Freddie great to my ears was the emotion he painted with his voice . I have recently found Sam Ryder , he does acoustic live performances of his songs and live changes and plays around. I wonder if he is trying to prove his voice iis real . Do artists have any choice or do record companies insist on making things phony?
For me the biggest difference between speeding up (or slowing) tracks on tape versus pitch correction is what they did back in the day did noy change the INTERVALS between notes, thus maintaining the original feel and expression. What they do now DOES change the intervals and it basically kills the singer's original delivery.
For me, "too perfect" always sounds like it lacks soul. Quite a few female singers equate vocal gymnastics with soul. You are explaining what we hear and how we hear it. Thanks
I take ‘inaccurate’ expression anytime, as a simple listener, not being a musician I just enjoy the feeling and expression of the artist. In Freddie’s case no correction desired. That’s probably the reason I found the release of the latest song a bit off.
You want to tell me that one of the most iconic opening lines "Mamaaaaa" is actually not pitch perfect???? Well, I guess it's then just a power of a perfect singer and his voice to make it seem absolutely perfect.
Thanks for the video. Do you think they modified Freddie's voice on The Miracle demo sessions Queen released lately? Since I've seen your precedent analysis, I'm suspicions about everything new ☹️
I’d love for you to compare Freddie’s early voice-White Queen is Devine-to his later voice. He admitted he abused his voice & never had those nodules removed. Also an analysis of Justin Hayward’s voice would be wonderful. Justin has remastered several Moodies albums, which I refuse to listen to-vinyl rules, and I’m wondering if he auto tuned his voice. If he did he’s a fool. Why mess with one of the greatest voices of all time?!
RE: my last comment.....Yes,we had overdubs, thanx to Les Paul..The Beatles were masters of that....But no pitch correction, no click tracks....as pure as you can get....
Great analysis. I think singing slightly flat gives it that melancholy feel and slightly sharp makes it more exciting. That's what great singers do probably without knowing it. Pitch correction or auto tune kills the feel and should only be used for singers who can't sing in key. Certainly not on a Freddie Mercury vocal. A real shame that they did use it on Face It Alone. Another great video you did on that! It just makes him sound less great. Would have been better to leave it alone..
I very much liked your analysis of the original track. I think it would have been better if you had A/B'd the original to what was done to it so that we could hear both.
Hey Fil, I just wrote the company behind Melodyne, and wanted to share this with you, since you encouraged me to also do some sort of "lobbyism" against this "madness" as you do it with your videos. Here is what I wrote to them: Dear Celemony people! I'm a big fan of music, both acoustic and electronic, analogue and digital, and I also find the new possibilities of digital post-processing very exciting. As you probably know, the use of your Melodyne product has become very widespread, and I would like to make a few suggestions. I think that Melodyne is often used to an exaggerated extent, which sometimes annoys me a bit when even vocalists who are actually very good without correction are being adjusted to some grid. But instead of demonizing all pitch correcting software, I would like to give you a suggestion as to how your app can even contribute to further musical education, and that would actually be a matter close to my heart: Please add a few alternative grids to the traditional grid of 12 tone equal temperament (12tet, 12edo) that will make people (e.g. younger music producers) understand that 12tet is not "right" in the absolute sense, but only one of several possible maps for guidance. So there should also be the possibility of providing a grid for the natural overtone series and its octaves for a freely definable frequency X, the so-called just intonation (JI), then there should definitely also be grids that have drawn in quarter tones, for example at the point of the Blue note of the blues or in the places that are typical for oriental scales. The subdivision into xenharmonic scales that are popular in the microtonal music community, such as 17edo, 19edo or the Bohlen-Pierce scale would also be conceivable. I think at least some adjustment to a wider perspective on pitch would be really important. Your software had a great influence on the development of the music industry, I think you also have a certain pedagogical mission (A/N: actually I meant responsibility) to show or remind people that the grid of a tempered 12-tone tuning is not in the absolute sense that is the only right one, but one of many possibilities. It seems like the popularity of applying this grid to any vocal tracks is now limiting human expression in terms of emotion and harmonic variability. And I think that instead of getting upset about it, I thought I'd rather suggest how even an app like Melodyne in particular can convey a somewhat broader understanding of music by offering more alternative tuning-grids. I'm not a programmer, but looking at all the different presets of other programs, I don't think it would take up too much programming effort or additional data capacity. For the users, on the other hand, it would certainly be exciting to look at their own singing through several "lenses", and certainly also a relief to recognize that not every quarter tone, generally not every deviation from tempered temperament, is automatically always wrong. Some might feel challenged by the challenge of singing a melody in 17edo, for example (some singers can do stuff like that) or by trying Arabic or Indian music and having some orientation. I would like to ask you to suggest this to the whole team, because I only see added value with comparatively little effort, really. It certainly won't get the Bohlen-Pierce scale into the top charts, but that's not the point. I think, in the end it would just expand the scope for what actually sounds good, fresh and exciting. Kind regards, SR
They replied, that was quick. There are already all sorts of scales, which you can also import or create on your own. Okay, I am sorry, Melodyne did their best, it´s not their fault.
This is the song, Whaling Stories, by Procol Harum, which, apparently had influenced Bohemian Rhapsody. th-cam.com/video/zaK1EHfL3to/w-d-xo.html Cheers, Fil! ✌️
Interesting that you say when people used tape and sped it up to raise a singer’s pitch so it would be more in tune, they were still working with the actual voice, while with pitch correction it’s more of an artificial adjustment. But how is that different than slightly dragging up a group of notes in Melodyne then tweaking the formants (which would actually compensate for the correction and make it less “chipmunk-like” then the tape example?)
Happy holidays Fil and thank you soooooo much for your videoes... I learned a great deal from them, and when you are THAT good looking, everything is easier... Thank you again for your vids and the time you spend on making videoes... Rock on!
You shouldn´t change Freddie´s voice, the music it´s organic and not perfect and that´s the way should be. He was one of a kind and is singing was perfect as it was, he was able to express and give meaning to his songs.

In the "uncorrected"/natural version we hear the remarkable beauty of Freddie's voice.
Dude you make music more accessible than anyone I’ve heard.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Happy Holiday's and glad you are feeling better.
Really enjoyed this one Fil..thank you.

Always gotta love Freddie
Great stuff. Honestly always heard the plosives and understood them to be an expression, a way of articulating those words most fully.
This was good. 🤘🏼

Thanks! You too!

Have wondered Why? Quite often.
I am not crazy about the auto correct. I rather the natural voice & I always loved Freddy's voice he sang anything & everything fantastic . Great analysis as always Fil👍

To think he created Bo Rap laid on a bed playing backwards 😃😃 on piano- the ultimate instrument IMO.
RIP Freddie RIP
I'm learning so much from you, Fil! 🤟
HEYYY Hon,
WHAT A GREAT CHRISTMAS PRESENT…
I HOPE YOU’RE ALL BETTER!

👆DM me on Telegram you won⛄
There is a examples of that in some live performances with the same range
I don't know why I don't like to hear a voice auto tuned or pitch corrected but I do love certain Remastered songs. For example the Beatles remastered songs sound as if the instruments are being brought forth but the vocals are still in tact ( their original way )
Is it a matter of who is doing the remastering and the quality of the equipment ?It could also be that I am listening. on a better sound system than a scratchy record like back in the day
There are so many factors .Could you do an Analysis of this perhaps at some point?
Thanks Fil ...Rock 🎼🎸
Same here
H i Fil i hope his fans real fans tell the managers and producers to stop messing with his vocals im a member of the karen carpenters fan club and we told Richard to stop changing her voice he listened thankgod like i say some people like the p noises and the way he makes his vocals change we can see him sing i can anyway listening to Queen for 40 odd years i can here the harmony changes in my ears the pitch ,leave things what dont need to be changed ,,,great vlog as usual x
I wonder if a listener's preference for old vinyl records is actually a preference for minimal or no post-recording processing.

Hi, Fil! Have you done an analysis on StevePerry of "Journey?" He had such a unique and wonderful voice and style, I would love to see you do it!!

Well said.
top level analysis
For me, "too perfect" always sounds like it lacks soul. Quite a few female singers equate vocal gymnastics with soul. You are explaining what we hear and how we hear it. Thanks

Interesting listen to, especiallyI I reasently listened to "Virgin Rock" and hers analysis of the same song.

I take ‘inaccurate’ expression anytime, as a simple listener, not being a musician I just enjoy the feeling and expression of the artist. In Freddie’s case no correction desired. That’s probably the reason I found the release of the latest song a bit off.
Improved is not always better.

I watched this and I'm wondering why mess with perfection?

You want to tell me that one of the most iconic opening lines "Mamaaaaa" is actually not pitch perfect???? Well, I guess it's then just a power of a perfect singer and his voice to make it seem absolutely perfect.
It took 5 people, I'm not sure how long to come up with Bieber's "Baby".
It took one man around a day to come up with this masterpiece!

I think everyone speaks with a variable intonation pitch pattern.
I love what you have taught me.

Hey Fil, I just wrote the company behind Melodyne, and wanted to share this with you, since you encouraged me to also do some sort of "lobbyism" against this "madness" as you do it with your videos. Here is what I wrote to them:
Dear Celemony people!
But instead of demonizing all pitch correcting software, I would like to give you a suggestion as to how your app can even contribute to further musical education, and that would actually be a matter close to my heart:
Please add a few alternative grids to the traditional grid of 12 tone equal temperament (12tet, 12edo) that will make people (e.g. younger music producers) understand that 12tet is not "right" in the absolute sense, but only one of several possible maps for guidance.
This is the song, Whaling Stories, by Procol Harum, which, apparently had influenced Bohemian Rhapsody.
th-cam.com/video/zaK1EHfL3to/w-d-xo.html
Cheers, Fil! ✌️
Oh yeah..can hardly tell them apart.
