Hi all, Thank you for your comments & questions. I thought it would be easier to reply en masse... Coco was 6 months old when I bought her. The shop owner DID NOT know she was pregnant. So, naturally, I had no idea she was going to give birth until I saw the first baby wriggling about. I would not have gotten so close to a mother birthing had I known she was pregnant. 1. All 4 babies survived. 2. She had one male baby that was black, and 3 females that were snow white. (Sonic was a white dad, dyed blue for animation purpose) 3. Their quills popped out and hardened after a couple of hours - Nature is kind to mother hedgehogs. 4. She DID NOT eat any of them. Inexperienced and shocked as she was, she was a wonderful mother. 5. All births, regardless of humans or animals entail some form of BLOOD...! And most mothers eat the placenta after the babies are born. #Note: the PLACENTA, not the babies. 6. Coco has since passed away but her babies have all grown up and I love them to bits.
aww I'm so sorry to hear that she passed away. My hedgie is 4 years old and I'm still so thankful for having him around, and I'm glad the babies grew to honor their mom and had you there at all times

The hedgehog demonstrates the importance of stretching, gradually and painlessly - without tearing, the fibrous coat of the pelvic floor muscles, which span, from pubic symphysis at the front to the spine at the back, the opening in the bony pelvis (forming a hammock which holds everything in the tummy). In this way, leaving behind super stretchy elastic muscle, so when the sixth baby hedgehog exits mummy-hedgehog's tummy, she had not even managed to lick the fifth baby dry, birth has becomes so quick. The muscular 'floor to the tummy' has been transformed into a 'trapdoor', which stretches around baby's head when the uterus contracts and pushes baby out, minimal delay; and then this muscle springs back to the horizontal to function as the floor to the tummy. The birth facilitating devices 'Aniball' and 'Epi-no Delphine Plus' act in the same way, some of the hard work of birth is done before birth, they stretch the fibrous coat prior to the onset of birth, less pushing for mum, so a shorter more gentle birth on baby; as baby's head is not used as that battering ram to stretch the fibrous coat of the pelvic floor muscles. A shorter birth, means less chance of cerebral hypoxia developing (a lack of oxygen to baby's brain) and causing damage to baby's brain cells. Humans are mammals just like hedgehogs are. Beautiful video, proving there is nothing inappropriate about birth. Our grandparents grew up on a small holding or farm and spring was the exciting time; with lambing and the sow having piglets.
