  • Hi and welcome back. This is Part 2 in a series of videos specifically about the techniques and methods I use when creating hand dyed yarn. However before the dyeing process begins there are a few things to know which I call the BASICS. These Basics include what you need to know before you get started dyeing yarn and will be the foundation to build on as you learn how to create your own unique works of art with fibre.
    Part 1 discussed protein fibres and Part 2 will discuss the three major components you need to dye protein fibres, ACID, DYE and HEAT. Each component will have it's own separate video for convenience. This video will be about DYE.
    For your convenience time stamps are listed in the info below so you can easily refer back to parts of the video you wish to review.

    Hello. Hope you're fine, thank you for the time you always take to explain. Please I have a question it is heat and acid that stick the colour to the yarn if I understood well, if I want to tie a silk scarf for example will I heat it first before pouring the powder colour or liquid into it to stick the colour ? With the acid of course

    • @EssenceofAutumnYarn
      @EssenceofAutumnYarn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you got it. You can watch my video on silk scarves to get an idea of how I do it. Link below.

    Thank you so much for making these videos, they have been super helpful! I was wondering what primary colors you use from Dharma as your yr basic Red blue and yellow. Do you get warm and cool of each? TIA

    • @EssenceofAutumnYarn
      @EssenceofAutumnYarn  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have so many dyes. I do believe I have all of their dyes marked as primaries. I don't pay attention to warm and cool colours, I just go with my gut and put together what looks good to me.

    Thank you for this video! Great info! I have a question. I've seen vinegar or citric acid to use with dyes, so water is ok too?

    • @EssenceofAutumnYarn
      @EssenceofAutumnYarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Water is always used some how in the dyeing process. I usually have the yarn either in a high or low amount of water and then I add either a citric acid mix or vinegar (depends on the fibre) to the water.

  • @sopranoxpiano3855
    @sopranoxpiano3855 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have a question! How long do you have your dye pots soak up the dye when doing immersion dying for solid colours, after adding the acid? Do you just keep it hot until there is no more dye in the water?

    • @EssenceofAutumnYarn
      @EssenceofAutumnYarn  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      After the dye has been absorbed the colour also needs time to heat set. The dye company you use will give recommended set times so I suggest following that. Since I sell the yarn I need to be a bit extra so I usually heat set for a minimum of 5 hrs. My yarn is set with steam so I can leave it for long periods of time without fear of scorching it.

    Hello Sheryl. I’ve asked a few dyers a question about dharma dyes, however none use dharma, then while researching you I remember you use dharma dyes. I was given a recipe for a colour I really like, however I can’t get this colour. It’s dharma 482 Delphinium Blue. My question to you is, does jacquard or any other make of dyes, have a colour that would be a replacement? I looked everywhere in Canada for dharma. None. Thank you

    • @EssenceofAutumnYarn
      @EssenceofAutumnYarn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you contact Dharma they may be able to suggest a dye that would work for you.
