I think the colour of the coolant doesn't really matter. It is just a dye that companies use to identify with their brands. A coolant is a mixture of 80% water and 20% additives (Anti-corrosion and/or anti-freeze additives). The anti-freeze (glycol) additive is not necessary in the hot climates such as Kenya. The quality of the anti-corrosion additive is what matters in an engine coolant as it needs to have a high boiling point and specific heat capacity. Some coolants come as concentrates which need to be mixed with water at a specified ratio (on the packaging) and most of coolants in the Kenyan market come as premixed from the blending plants so no need for mixing with water.
In Kenya there's no need of using coolant it's just a business thing someone came with . Corrosive part you talking about that will only happen when you drain water but why would you drain water from the Engine?

Mr. Wokabi.I think you got your facts a bit mixed up on this one. Coolant is simply a water and antifreeze + + mix. Firstly, impurities, generally, raise the boiling point of water not lower it. Secondly, inorganic coolant is better suited for the older engines made from cast iron because they have chemicals that better inhibit corrosion as compared to organic coolants. Organic coolants are better suited for newer engine applications because the alloys used,(generally alluminium alloys) are less susceptible to corrosion by water and organic compounds. They are also a lot more friendly to the environment at time of disposal or accidental spills. Finally, the colours are a guide with pink or blue indicating organic acids and phosphates and greed indicating inorganic additives (mainly silicates) This explains the pink coolant you generally find in newer cars. So yeah, if your car has an aluminium block, stick to the pink coolant (organic) and green for the cast iron lot. (Inorganic).

Good info as usual. Coolant was invented mostly for use in those regions in the world that experience winter to prevent the cooling system that used water from freezing into ice and cracking the engine block. It has a very low freezing point. It is better than water due to its anti corrosion ingredients but it can still cause it if left for too long and in the wrong mix. It will accelerate galvanic corrosion which is the corrosion of different types of engine metals that are in contact like steel, iron and aluminium. Another way that it can get corrosive is if the engine and by extension the radiator is not grounded well. It can become an electrolyte and promote metal corrosion by electrolysis. By ingredients the coolant we use is almost 90% percent water and 10% "coolant'( anti freeze) while in winter countries the mix is 50/50 .

Impurities increase the boiling point of a solution. They lower the melting point. Could have been a confusion after the previous point leading up to that statement
You need to carefully read what the bottle says. It’s not safe to rely on the colour, as there's no regulation on what colour to use on specific coolants. Always double check your owner’s manual to determine the type of coolant your system needs....
Impurities in the solution increase the boiling point. This is because impurities decrease the water molecules available for vaporisation during boiling. A greater amount of heat is needed to make the same amount of impure solution to vapourize than the heat that is required to make a pure solution vaporize. Therefore, leading to the rise of the overall boiling point of the solution.
The guy is correct. Infact very correct. Most guys are talking of distilled water which is very wrong. Older engines where distilled water was used had a thin layer of zinc oxide on the inner part of the engine that's why distilled water with nil hardness is calcium and magnesium sulfate was allowed. Right now your modern coolant is a designed multifunctional liquid of. Ethelyne glycol which acts as an antifreeze and nitrite based corrosion inhibitor which acts as an oxygen Scavenger once, the oxygen in the closed cooling system is consumed to turn the nitrite to nirates, reason you sometimes might see which suspension in your coolant in the radiator. Your average coolant will do just fine in a car..whether red, green or blue. Only way coolant will destroy your engine, is if it mixes with engine oil. There are a few cars (2010-2014 CX-9) which are designed in a way, the water pump is chain driven. Coolant could get into the engine block via weep holes in the water pump. Coolant could mix with the engine oil and destroys the engine.
Prolonged use of the green coolant on a more modern engine could harm it. For instance for sections that have relatively thinner sheets of metal acting as barriers could be easily corroded and fixing that become a whole other messy affair
I have been to Europe and while I was there I discovered that they have 4 different coolant colors namely green, orange, pink and blue. I recently saw a common brand used in Europe called shield at carrefour shelves and all those four coolant colors were available. I think it would have helped if you focused on all four.. my two cents though 🤔
Mostly green and red or pink has been widely used to distinguish the two differences in alkalinity but as I stated there are hybrid or synthetic versions that may come in different colours what is important is to carefully analyse the quality, standard and specifications of your car before you purchase one
Using the wrong coolant is bad news on an engine, it can create a chemical imbalance, cause sludge, leaks, inefficient cooling, and clog up your cooling system, using the wrong coolant is bad. That's why it's best to use what the dealer recommends but some people say some aftermarket coolants are better than original coolant but if in doubt then just change it with original oem stuff on a normal basis.
as per experience and as a previous coolant user in my car,I have observed that the coolant actually eats rust and corrosion in your radiator and the inside of the engine block waterways.as a result of this, the edges of the cylinder head gasket will slowly be subjected to this "eating action of the coolant" until eventually will leak water into the cylinders, thereby destroying your engine....

Wewe uko set for a long time since electric car coolant never gets in contact with a hot engine. It cools the car batteries at very low pressure and temps through heat exchangers and will not get contaminated with corrosion for a long time.I'll bet hiyo yako has original coolant from when it was brand new. Electric is the future no service , oil changes even brakes last a long time.

What People don't know: These coolants take longer to reach 100C the temperature at which most cars are programmed to turn on the fan. The coolant will stay at about 95C for very long without hitting 100C leading to actually an overheating car . Your temp. gauge won't indicate it's overheating though because it's just slightly below 100C Water heats up faster and turns on fans faster to dissipate the heat. The car's cooling systems are also programmed with the thermal properties of water not some random cooling liquid no one knows what it's made of.
On Saturday my Nissan patrol stalled along Kenyatta avenue and again along Langat road as I was heading home. I also realized that when you park your car under the sun and then drive for long at high speed it overheats faster.
You have bigger problems my friend. Parking under the sun does not cause overheating. These are the main causes: Low coolant level, bad waterpump, radiator blockage or leak, bad cooling fan clutch( for a mechanical fanned engine), bad electric fan ( due to bad fan relay, motor or coolant temperature sensor, wrong engine timing) and a bad cylinder head( that can occur due to overheating an engine for too long. Check for oil in the radiator and milky oil on the dipstick). Car engines and cooling systems are tested and run in desert temps during development to ensure they can survive in high temps and speeds meaning there is another problem going on with your car.
@@tomm487 Thank you for you constructive and helpful comment. I had just added some coolant the previous Sunday when I was visiting someone outside town and back. Other than that I just do the routine maintenance and ask the attendants at the gas station to check whenever I fuel. I may need to visit my mechanic on this, but I have just let the car sit at the garage until I have time to get it checked. I don't wanna risk.
@@munenekelvin4067 No problem chief. It is most likely a simple thing. It's always easier to start with those when diagnosing. I forgot to add three more simple things to check on, the thermostat, which when it goes bad will cause overheating and the radiator cap itself which is a simple pressure valve .A bad one can cause overheating. Also have them check for and purge air bubbles in the cooling system, it's supposed to be airtight.

Am using XADo coolant...tell us more about the radiator pipes...Assuming they are prone to wear , how often should they be changed?
Using the wrong coolant is bad news on an engine, it can create a chemical imbalance, cause sludge, leaks, inefficient cooling, and clog up your cooling system, using the wrong coolant is bad. That's why it's best to use what the dealer recommends but some people say some aftermarket coolants are better than original coolant but if in doubt then just change it with original oem stuff on a normal basis.
I agree with you.
as per experience and as a previous coolant user in my car,I have observed that the coolant actually eats rust and corrosion in your radiator and the inside of the engine block waterways.as a result of this, the edges of the cylinder head gasket will slowly be subjected to this "eating action of the coolant" until eventually will leak water into the cylinders, thereby destroying your engine....
By the time coolant gets acidic which destroy gasket so you need to flash coolant every 30k to 50k mileage to protect engine gasket
Erick there is a green coolant with dark green that damaged my car in 2019 so they should buy that light green coolant
Hello. My bluebird sylphy came with blue coolant. Seems blue one is difficulty to get around. Which one do i replace with. Just as you have said, mechanics tell me colour doennt matter , that i put any. Which one do i use
How did u solve this coz am also stranded..blue is not found
Pink or red coolant and mix 50% with water
Green is IAT(Inorganic) while pink is organic, check your references well.
Should recall this episode . Green is inorganic while pink is organic
Great tips. New information to me. Will follow from now.
Thanks Erick for the good content.
You welcome and thank you for watching
What coolant should be used in Nissan engine's?..especially the wingroad in particular
A car that has not had coolant, just water in the radiator. How would that be remedied?
Blue coolant on my 2012 Electric Nissan leaf I've had for 4 years now and almost at 30,000kms since I got it.
4 years @30,000 km only?
🥲
Some of us do over 80,000km per year😭
You got the name wrong...Organic coolants r for newer version of cars whiles inorganic coolants are for older cars...aside that, all the informations you gave out are correct
Well noted sir
I agree
A nice insight bro, keep up ningekutumia kakitu but Sina namba
Thank you Erick. We are officially Carnverted! Mine is the pink one & has been close to the low mark especially before driving. Whenever i take to the mech it close to full so he says its ok. Should i top up anyways?
Waiting for the answer too
When you drive the liquid expand due to heat generated.
I would very much like for you to introduce progressive topics on car brands, year of models and trim size within the local market especially for guys looking for used but well maintained vehicles as their first purchase
Next ongelealea Spark Plugs!
ATF hiyo kitu huwa haishi..KAZI ni nini??
Loved the information it was helpful don't mind about the naysayers, congrats Man.
What People don't know: These coolants take longer to reach 100C the temperature at which most cars are programmed to turn on the fan. The coolant will stay at about 95C for very long without hitting 100C leading to actually an overheating car . Your temp. gauge won't indicate it's overheating though because it's just slightly below 100C
Water heats up faster and turns on fans faster to dissipate the heat.
The car's cooling systems are also programmed with the thermal properties of water not some random cooling liquid no one knows what it's made of.
People like you should be banned from giving any automotive advice.
Woow Great Advice ..Makes sense ..
Omondi Fredrick : re-read your essay n see if you are making any sense :you ve written a whole novel yet you ain't saying anything.
Even a class 4 drop out will avoid such nonsense takes
My AXELA 2014 has the green one; it came from Japan with it.
Mine as well axela 2015...
My 2011 has green too. So we need not change
Mine too has green one .. confused kabisa
Very good piece of advice Erick.
On Saturday my Nissan patrol stalled along Kenyatta avenue and again along Langat road as I was heading home. I also realized that when you park your car under the sun and then drive for long at high speed it overheats faster.
Whee hiyo ni Gari gani. Sisi we park in the sun and go..
Also have them check for and purge air bubbles in the cooling system, it's supposed to be airtight.
the blue one kwani ni ya ndege
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🔥 shieeetttt
😀😀😀😀😀😀
Wale wa water coolants hit like
I use distilled water on my engine N46...works fine
Erick Wokabi deserves an award
Hi Erick with a ck, do the colours apply universally, like is the green in shell the same as green in rubis
In most cases yes, kindly read the type of coolant on the description while buying it and make sure it meets the quality and spec of your car
@@CARNVERSATIONS thanks for the response
Water has a bp of 100degrees while coolant bp is 450 degrees
Very informative. Keep up the good work. Can we have an episode on 'Instrument cluster symbols' - (so called christmas lights when things are terribly wrong with you r tin on wheels) - particularly the ones you should never ignore?
Noted coming your way soon
No wonder i changed from green to pink,my friend the kind of rust am seeing is terrible, will change to green.THANKS Erick!
I use toyota genuwine pink coolant. Sold in the black container for my 2004 toyota ist
Perfect for your car 🚗
The guy is in agreement with the use of coolant.. the heading is misleading. Listen before commenting.
It's for the views,. Most TH-camrs do it to attract viewers so they have to put an attractive headers
Wueh this is new ive used all from water pink and green ikitegemea mfuko and availability... jesus😲😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂 flush your coolant and be safe
@@CARNVERSATIONS i will.... i must soon thanks🤗
Hapo sawa bro
Those in search of information, here you need to trend carefully. Just know there is coolant in a car and in different colors and different from each other. They have antifreeze, antirust, .... Do your homework. Nice eye opener Erick.
Water cools engine parts better than coolant
You must mix 1 to 1 ratio coolant has a higher boilng point
I usually use water, no pressure
