I worked for CN Rail and had the great pleasure of working on these big girls did several assembly change outs lapping the cylinder to the head by hand was an all day job . Also broke several torque mutiplies on head bolts great to see the old girl being given a chance to blow that big black smoke again

Awesome video guys. Thanks for posting it. Really nice to see how they are serviced as a mechanic. I would really love to own one of these S2's. Looking forward to seeing your next videos. My Dad was a locomotive engineer for the South Buffalo Railway for 37 years & his Father for 42 years. My Grandfather retired as the General Yardmaster for the railroad. My Dad would take me to work & teach me how to operate these locomotives pulling a fully loaded
train when I was just a young boy. Those were some of the best days of my life. Papa said he really liked the older S2 Alco locomotives the best because they were easy to operate & he could change out a lot of railroad cars faster using them over the newer Alco S6's, EMD SW-7's & EMD SW-1200's even though some of them had a bit more power. Best regards

That paint scheme is just like what Nashville Chattanooga & St. Louis did on their Baldwin VO-1000 switchers

When you pull your next rocker box cylinder head use the same style 3/4 inch hose a construction worker would use with a jack hammer. That torque wrench was starving for compressed air. The small line just isn't capable of supplying sufficient air which is why the railroads use a 3/4 construction style air line. Make sure you use the construction quick connects too. You will see the difference in power the first time you squeeze the trigger.

The music drowned out what the men were saying. In an engineering video it is out of place and unnecessary.

Those Alcos are damn near bullet proof. That old dirty head just need a visit to a machine shop and it will be okie dokie. Clean up that piston and put some new rings on it too. No junk there. It can all be fixed. Luckily you have a parts donar to save money and a handy bucket truck to move items. Thanks for the post.

will there be a re-assembly vid? fascinated by the size of the components and 800 ft-lbs torque on the head bolts. makes an automobile engine look like a toy.

Cool old engines! I have scale models of both of them, (1/87) would it be possible to machine new parts using old parts as reference? I'm taking Manufacturing technologies courses right now and think it would be interesting to see if it would be possible to Make new parts for a 70+ year old engine.

What size engine do both locos use? They're scrapping ex NSW 48 class ALCOs in Australia.

The engine in an ALCO S-2 locomotive is a 539T engine rated at 1000 horsepower 6 cylinder inline 12 3/4 inch by 13 inch bore and stroke idles at 275 rpm and full throttle is 740 rpm. The engine was built by an ALCO subsidiary Mycantosh and Seymour developed and designed the 539 series engines by putting the weight of the engine into the parts instead of just the block making the engine far more robust so it would last. That's why you still see them in service as most of the S-1 thru 4 switchers were built in the 1940's. Properly maintained they are sweet to run.
I ran this type of switcher for years on the New Haven, Penn Central, Conrail and Amtrak.

@@jamesshanks2614 I know it's been a long time, but are you sure it isn't 12-1/2 inch bore?
