As a French girl, I grew up with Peau d'Âne and I loved your video ! It's definitely my favorite film ever. I just wanted to add a story about the two stags that frame Peau d'Ane's bed ! It's actually not a symbolism for anything : Jacque Demy had ordered a mechanic flower bed that would open and close every time the Princess would come by, but in the end the bed was hideous. He took two stags that were hanging around in Chambord's corridor and put them there ! The film did not have a high budget (actually it almost got shut down but Deneuve and Demy gave their salary) and a lot of money went into costumes. So, a lot of the decor are improvised !!
I loved seeing your react to this movie. As a French, I grew up with Peau d’Âne’s story in every shape and form possible, my mother bought me a cd of the songs when I couldn’t even speak, and it influenced me so much that I asked her to sew me a color of the weather-dress (which she somehow nailed to perfection, even better than the movie if I may say ahha). So seeing you wondering what is going to happen is a brand new experience and quite fun ! This movie is so eery and comforting despite the horrors it depicts. It’s the perfect form for a fairy tail: beautiful and magically composed, but has a twisted side (in the colors for instance, and the grandiosity of the costumes and decors) that triggers an uncanny feeling (apparently, Demy was inspired by what he called the “American bad taste” when designing the movie’s aesthetic which I find hilarious). A true and timeless masterpiece that I am glad people enjoy to this day! Your comments are also always so interesting and full of knowledgeable thoughts and complementary information! Thank you!
Thank you for your video and your opinions, always interesting seen by a non-French person ! While Jean Marais recites poems by Guillaume Apollinaire and Jean Cocteau, given by the Lilac Fairy and he tells us they come "from the Future", I didn't understand the final arrival by helicopter of the reconciled couple when I saw the film in 1970. I was however 12 years old at the time, but this scene was so anachronistic and unexpected that it took me a moment to realize that this machine also came from the Future ! In any case this masterpiece and its wonderful music moved me forever, as "Les Demoiselles de Rochefort" did three years earlier...
Maaan I watched this so much aw a kid!!! And I didn’t understand French! And I couldn’t really follow English subtitles cuz English is my second language! So my great grandmother would translate it to me! The style is so,,, HEKWBSK the dresses! Have me dead!
7:24 it was Anne Germain, she died in 2016 / 11:43 we don't know !! the designers of the dress were so proud of the result that they decided to never reveal the secret of the dress's making ... / 17:54 the film is a tribute to jean cocteau's beauty and the beast , the slow motion and the presence of jean marais is not a coincidence !
So this is another film I've never heard of and will now have to buy! Oh wow, there's so much going on here. The visual effects remind me of the Wizard of Oz. The music is stunning. And this sounds obvious, but the humour is SO. FRENCH. XD I think that your description of fairy tales and what they teach children is also very articulate and spot-on, by the way. You have a gift for that.
Love this fairytale and grew up watching it over and over 🥰 such a wonderful walk down the memory lane 🥹 thank you for this amazing look into the masterpiece 🫶🏼
Thanks for this cool video ! Peau d'Âne is a great movie, still beloved by everyone 50 years later. By the way, Beauty and the Beast was written by Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve, not Charles Perrault.
Top tier analysis, thank you for this content ! It’s always funny to see non French people react to this movie lol here most of us saw it as kids so it’s quite familiar in spite of its weirdness 😂

This movie reminds me of chitty chitty bang bang, but the French equivalent. But, I love Peau Dane more then I love chitty chitty bang bang 🥰💖🌸
Lots of blue face in this movie. Don't know how they got away with that.
